MINNEAPOLIS - In the height of all the looting in downtown Minneapolis Wednesday night, one restaurant owner had an enormous decision to make. Watching his business being destroyed, he pulled out his gun during an intense confrontation, before ultimately deciding not to pull the trigger. The Nguyen family started the Lotus Restaurant in 1984. It’s the American dream, which was almost shattered in one night by a few people looking to destroy their hard work. (Snip) They didn’t listen - first throwing a rock, then a fire extinguisher. Five of them jumped inside. Then one guy zeroed in on Nguyen’s

Notice they never try this with Korean businesses after the LA riots? Now add Vietnamese businesses to that rioters' list of "no go" zones.

I wouldn't have cried all night! And if that kid hadn't stopped, I would have fired. It's amazing how they aren't so brave when a loaded gun held by a defiant owner is pointed at them. The attitude of all these rioters is that they are unstoppable and can do whatever they want. I'll say this with certainty. Donald Trump has already laid out the plans to end this insurrection after the elections, which I predict will be a land slide in his favor and down-ticket as well. "...and there will be the weeping and gnashing of teeth, etc."

#3 If you have not been in that situation, or combat firefight or a police situation; please do not comment. It is a burden an aware person carries the rest of their life. You have to make that decision to pull the trigger well, well in advance.

I was hoping for a happy ending......where Mr. Nguyen pulls his weapon and kills the thug while defending himself, his family and his property. Maybe next time!

The mention of an Vietnamese reminds me of a flight a had out of New Orleans in the late '90s. The black gentleman next to works south of New Orleans and was a part time minister. In conversation, he stated that Blacks would not get out of there present status until they get over the idea that they are owed. He referred to how Vietnamese had resettled in south Louisiana and through hard work was making a good life.

Sounds like contributory negligence, to me. The restaurant owner had a chance to do something to save his restaurant, and didn't? Then the insurance company should say, "Sorry, we're not paying."

You break in to another person's home or business and threaten to destroy everything they have in this world, it is a little late to be showing your "frightened" face. I would say the looter should count himself blessed and quit while still alive, but it appears that they just feel even more invincible.
Democrats letting these terrorists by with their "fiery, peaceful protests will cause and incredible amount of needless death and suffering for many years to come because of teaching them that there are no consequences.

I suspect that Mr. Nguyen had a good idea of the cost he would pay by shooting someone, even if he were totally justified (which he no doubt would be). Coming from Vietnam he grew up in the chaos of the war and probably reflects constantly on what he saw. In the years to come I hope those young people who looted his restaurant return and thank him for not killing them and they demonstrate to Mr. Nguyen they were worthy of not dying that day.
If there is a parallel scene in literature I would say it is the moment Bilbo decides not to kill Gollum after the riddles in the dark.

I cannot answer the question on whether I would have pulled the trigger, and neither can any other keyboard cowboy on this (or any other) website. We all think we would react like John Wayne, or Dirty Harry in these situations but the fact is many of us would run rather than stand.
That being said it is usually unnecessary to actually pull the trigger. Far more crimes are stopped by the showing but not using of a weapon. Biden might be an idiot but he is right about one thing, If you break into someones house in the middle of the night there is no sound more terrifying to you than the sound of someone upstairs racking a round into his 12 gauge pump shotgun. Even brain addled drug addicts will usually make the prudent decision to look elsewhere for whatever it is they are after. No shots need be fired.
Nguyens response is also not surprising, we spend our lives preaching peace and respect and to the sanctity of human life. Ending one, even that of a stupid rioter, is life changing and not to be taken lightly.
None of us know how we would have responded when the excrement hits the oscillating air movement device, we also have no idea how we would react in its aftermath. Brazen statements of testosterone soaked armchair bravado mean nothing. Hope and pray that you NEVER get an answer to the question of What would you do and how would it affect you.

I'm sending $25 to Mr. Nguyen to help cover the damage because I'm sure I won't get to Minneapolis for egg rolls any time soon. He's the kind of American we need to support. I suggest any local Ldotters have a meet and greet there sometime next week after he reopens.

Yep, I'll throw in a rebuilding contribution too. Simply because Mr. Nguyen, I think you were a US citizen before me and I don't think that in MY country you should need to defend your business with a gun. That took guts and I would have done the same but you shouldn't have to do that.

The story says the situation dissipated after the police arrived. So when Minneapolis defunds the police what will happen?
