MINNEAPOLIS - In the height of all the looting in downtown Minneapolis Wednesday night, one restaurant owner had an enormous decision to make. Watching his business being destroyed, he pulled out his gun during an intense confrontation, before ultimately deciding not to pull the trigger. The Nguyen family started the Lotus Restaurant in 1984. It’s the American dream, which was almost shattered in one night by a few people looking to destroy their hard work. (Snip) They didn’t listen - first throwing a rock, then a fire extinguisher. Five of them jumped inside. Then one guy zeroed in on Nguyen’s

Lord & Taylor, one of the country's oldest department store chains, is going out of business after filing for bankruptcy earlier this month. The retailer was sold just a year ago for $100 million to Le Tote, a San Francisco online clothing rental company, by Canadian parent Hudson's Bay Co. Lord & Taylor will permanently close its remaining 38 stores and shut down its website, the company said Thursday. It is currently holding going-out-of-business sales in stores and online. Founded as a dry goods store in 1826, Lord & Taylor has struggled for years. But the pandemic has changed the

Democratic strategists are worried scenes of violence in Kenosha, Wis., and the “defund the police” debate could give Republicans and President Trump a boost with suburban voters. The issue has come back to the forefront amid new incidents of violence, property destruction and protests this week after another unarmed Black man, Jacob Blake, was shot in the back by a police officer. Some Democrats worry the continuing unrest could give Trump an opening with swing voters in Wisconsin and other key states that voted for Trump in 2016. “Republicans are very wisely pouncing on this moment and using that language

“Harry Potter” author J.K. Rowling has emerged into a fresh controversy after she returned the Ripple of Hope Award bestowed upon her by the Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights organization in December 2019, following criticism from Kerry Kennedy. Kerry is the daughter of Robert F. Kennedy, and the president of the organization. “Over the course of June 2020 — LGBTQ Pride Month — and much to my dismay, J.K. Rowling posted deeply troubling transphobic tweets and statements,” Kennedy posted on the organization’s website on Aug. 3. “On June 6, she tweeted an article headlined “Opinion: Creating a more equal post-COVID-19

Washington — In her first solo speech as Democratic vice presidential nominee, Senator Kamala Harris vowed to stand with the protesters in Kenosha, Wisconsin, as many in the country reel from the police shooting of Jacob Blake, a Black man who was unarmed, in Wisconsin on Sunday. (Snip) Harris, who delivered her remarks at George Washington University to a socially distanced press corps, not far from her Washington residence and blocks away from the White House, where President Trump will be addressing the Republican National Convention on Thursday evening. Michelle Obama has recalled her "exhausting" experience with racism using the example of a simple trip to get ice cream with her daughters during her time in the White House. (Snip) "There was a line, and once again, when I'm just a Black woman, I notice that white people don't even see me. They're not even looking at me. So I'm standing there with two little Black girls, another Black female adult, they're in soccer uniforms, and a white woman cuts right in front of us to order. Like she didn't even see us." No Republican presidential candidate has carried Nevada since George W. Bush did in 2004. But Democrats are concerned that could change this year, Democratic state officials told Newsweek. "Nevada absolutely could be the Michigan of 2020," Las Vegas veteran Democratic strategist Andres Ramirez said. "I am certainly not convinced that Nevada is a slam dunk for the Biden team. I am certainly not convinced that we know where this is going to go at this moment." The state's recovery has been hampered by the coronavirus pandemic's gutting of the tourism industry, which led Nevada to have the worst unemployment figures

SAN DIEGO — Arson is suspected as the cause of a July 12 fire that left extensive damage to the USS Bonhomme Richard and a U.S. Navy sailor is being questioned as a potential suspect, a senior defense official said Wednesday. The sailor was being questioned but was not detained and defense department leaders were notified of the development, the official said. The official, with knowledge of the investigation, spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity to provide details not yet made public. MINNEAPOLIS — The Minneapolis mayor imposed a curfew Wednesday night and requested National Guard help after unrest that included violence and store looting broke out downtown following what authorities said was misinformation about the suicide death of a Black homicide suspect. Mayor Jacob Frey said details of the curfew which went into effect immediately were still being worked out. Frey said during a news conference Wednesday night that he and Gov. Tim Walz had been in contact to address the situation. Frey said bolstering enforcement was an effort to “stay ahead of the game as much as possible." “What we’re

KENOSHA, Wis. — Downtown buildings set ablaze by arsonists were still smoldering from the night before when Kirk Ingram started to paint an angel on his boarded-up store front. Ingram, a Democrat who runs a massage therapy business, said the war-zone images of his city on TV — armed people running through the streets, burned cars and broken windows — were bolstering President Donald Trump's get-tough message. Maybe a few uplifting murals could start to tell a different story about Kenosha, Ingram said Wednesday. Trump has attempted to frame the violent unrest in the wake of Jacob Blake’s shooting as

When former President Obama delivered his convention speech from Philadelphia last week, it raised some questions for Democrats about Joe Biden’s lack of a travel schedule. Biden has been effectively sidelined because of the coronavirus pandemic, keeping his public appearances largely confined to his hometown of Wilmington, Del., where he also ended up accepting his party’s nomination last week. “I think a lot of people thought, ‘If Obama can get on a plane and travel, why can't Biden?’" said one Democratic strategist, who pointed to the former president’s trip from Massachusetts to Philadelphia for his prime-time address. “I know we

In a speech to the Republican National Convention Tuesday night, President Trump’s youngest daughter, Tiffany Trump, urged Americans to “transcend political boundaries” in November, telling voters the 2020 presidential election is a “fight to keep America true to America.” “Since speaking at the Republican Convention four years ago, so much has changed for the world, for our country, and for my family,” she said, noting that she, “like so many students across the world,” graduated from law school during the coronavirus pandemic. “Our generation is unified in facing the future in uncertain times — and many of us are considering
