SAN DIEGO — Arson is suspected as the cause of a July 12 fire that left extensive damage to the USS Bonhomme Richard and a U.S. Navy sailor is being questioned as a potential suspect, a senior defense official said Wednesday. The sailor was being questioned but was not detained and defense department leaders were notified of the development, the official said. The official, with knowledge of the investigation, spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity to provide details not yet made public. The amphibious assault ship burned for more than four days and was the Navy’s worst

Comments:

It would cost up to $4 billion to replace such a ship. The perp should have to walk the plank.

Wow. We'd speculated as much. Would be interesting to learn more about the firebug and why he or she was allowed to serve in our navy.

We routinely had guys try to set fire to the ship--usually to delay a deployment--but our DC teams always found them and stopped any serious damage.

What a dumb article. Mr. Anonymity, spoke to give details that have not been made public. (Mr. Anonymity needs some serious brig time). However, there were no facts provided, just speculation - that a sailor was questioned about the fire. That's not news that is what happens every time - Mr. Sailor you were onboard on 12 July 2020, what do you know about the fire? The it end with Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Gilday, that they have not found any clues of foul play (did he really say"foul play?). What have we learned about any further developments? Nothing. The only thing we can hang our hats on is the implication of the ever frightening "yet".

I doubt this arsonist actually was in the Navy. But I would bet that somehow he managed to get a job with one of the sub contractors who got the contract for working on this ship in the first place. Check all employees in these subcontractor companies. That is where they manage to gain entry to secure places.

I didnt see any evidence of arson in the article. Maybe its like airplane crash investigations; if they cant find the cause, it must be pilot error. Here, if they cant find the cause it must be arson.

MINNEAPOLIS - In the height of all the looting in downtown Minneapolis Wednesday night, one restaurant owner had an enormous decision to make. Watching his business being destroyed, he pulled out his gun during an intense confrontation, before ultimately deciding not to pull the trigger. The Nguyen family started the Lotus Restaurant in 1984. It’s the American dream, which was almost shattered in one night by a few people looking to destroy their hard work. (Snip) They didn’t listen - first throwing a rock, then a fire extinguisher. Five of them jumped inside. Then one guy zeroed in on Nguyen’s

Lord & Taylor, one of the country's oldest department store chains, is going out of business after filing for bankruptcy earlier this month. The retailer was sold just a year ago for $100 million to Le Tote, a San Francisco online clothing rental company, by Canadian parent Hudson's Bay Co. Lord & Taylor will permanently close its remaining 38 stores and shut down its website, the company said Thursday. It is currently holding going-out-of-business sales in stores and online. Founded as a dry goods store in 1826, Lord & Taylor has struggled for years. But the pandemic has changed the

Democratic strategists are worried scenes of violence in Kenosha, Wis., and the “defund the police” debate could give Republicans and President Trump a boost with suburban voters. The issue has come back to the forefront amid new incidents of violence, property destruction and protests this week after another unarmed Black man, Jacob Blake, was shot in the back by a police officer. Some Democrats worry the continuing unrest could give Trump an opening with swing voters in Wisconsin and other key states that voted for Trump in 2016. “Republicans are very wisely pouncing on this moment and using that language

KENOSHA, Wis. — Downtown buildings set ablaze by arsonists were still smoldering from the night before when Kirk Ingram started to paint an angel on his boarded-up store front. Ingram, a Democrat who runs a massage therapy business, said the war-zone images of his city on TV — armed people running through the streets, burned cars and broken windows — were bolstering President Donald Trump's get-tough message. I can’t remember a wildcat strike ever happening by a pro sports team, let alone an entire league, let alone during the playoffs. My guess is that it’ll alienate more people than it’ll win over, but alienation never lasts very long in sports. A million fans will vow today that they’ll never watch the NBA again and most will be back next week, or at least for the Finals. And everyone who isn’t will be back next season. The Milwaukee Bucks violated the collective bargaining agreement with the league when they decided to protest by not playing today’s game against the Orlando Magic.

It is sometimes underappreciated how new professional sports is as a dominant cultural phenomenon. For the vast majority of human history, sports has been overwhelmingly played by amateurs. And even in America, it is only in the past fifty years that this professionalized version of sport became a route to wealth. Baseball, which has the longest professional sports history in the United States, illustrates this: the average MLB salary is up an inflation-adjusted 3,000 percent since the late 1960s.
