New York—The MTA on Wednesday warned of potentially severe service cuts and fare increases should they not receive much-needed federal aid amid the coronavirus pandemic. "The survival of the MTA and the existence of millions of jobs in this region and across the country lies squarely in the hands of the federal government," MTA Chairman and CEO Patrick Foye said at the start of the meeting.(Snip) Foran laid out many grim scenarios, including reducing service on subways, buses and the Staten Island Railroad by up to 40%. This could save the MTA nearly $880 million annually and result in the permanent loss

No, just hell no. Not from outside the area that receives direct services from them.

Service should only be as often as it takes to fill most seats. Prices should be what it takes to cover costs.

FTA:New York City subway ridership is up a bit from the peak of the coronavirus crisis but is still down about 75% overall, Foy said.
Let me guess. Despite drastic reduction in ridership they are probably still running all the trains as usual, with all the attendant costs. They have no incentive to control costs except when the money spigot is turned off.

No way. The idiots and thieves in charge have done the worst job in the WORLD, based on death rate per million, so let them be responsible for their disastrous mess.
Not any of MY money going to shore up their collapsing nightmare of a hell hole.

Golly, you mean the MTA can't provide free service? Weren't there some pre-Covid protests to let gate jumpers get on and ride for free? What happened?

The NYC subway token collectors of yore - - who retired at age 47 on 146% of their final year's pay - - are having a difficult time paying their docking fees in Florida. It's getting awfully expensive maintaining a cabin cruiser in a gated community's marina - - especially when the Mercedes and Porsche also need maintenance - - so - - it's only fair that we should all chip in a bit to help.

No, “the fault lies squarely in the hands” of their Commie mayor, Comrade DeBlasio, who cut the police budget by a billion dollars. One way to cut soaring NYC crime and reduce MTA ridership is for all those who can to leave NYC. Maybe then when the rats take over the city will those who remain consider getting rid of the corrupt Dims who run the place.

The free riders jump the gate right in front of the cops who are ordered by the Mayor not to enforce the laws. The rest of us get to pay?

Instead of begging for money maybe DeBlasio and Governor Cuomo could let businesses open again so that people actually need to ride the MTA and fares go up and revenues go up. If the two idiots running the show in the NYC area had any clue about money and finances (except how to beg for it from the Federal government) they would not be in such trouble.

Only one solution. You made the problem, you solve the problem. Better start raising fares, fees, and taxes.

So be it. Your city, your system. Charge what you need and cut losing routes, layoffs needed.

Let me see. I live in Texas. I derive no value from the MTA. But I'm supposed to help keep it running?
Why? They ruined their city and now they want my help?
OK, here's my offer. When NYC votes in November to re-elect Pres. Trump, and NY State does so as well, then I'll think about sending my tax $ to NY.

12 BILLION!!!!??? Just how much does it cost to run a subway?
Im guessing that 12 billion is to cover a whole lot of previous mis-management and pensions.

Memo to NYC MTA: Try to make due without the extra billions you requested. Have you had a look at the empty streets in NYC??? Looks to me not too many people are taking the dirty smashed up subway!! Or do you want the rest of the US pay for your fat pensions and long vacations!!!????! Try to live within your budget!!! Have a rotten day!

NYC's unionized mass transit boondoggle is the city's responsibility, not ours. The have people smashing windows in the subway, racking up hundreds of thousands of dollars in damages, taking cars out of service, and outstripping the ability of the vendor to keep up with demand for the $500 panes of glass, and they can't catch the vandals even though at least one of them is on camera.
