The opening night of the 2020 Republican National Convention blew last week’s Democratic snoozefest out of the water, drawing in six times more viewers on C-SPAN’s livestream. Approximately 440,000 people tuned in to watch the first night of the virtual GOP convention on Monday, compared to just 76,000 views for the first night of the DNC, according to a Hill report. While the Democratic gathering boasted speeches from big names such as former first lady Michelle Obama, who gave a rousing endorsement of Joe Biden and drew the ire of President Trump, far more people tuned in to see Donald Trump Jr., Nikki Haley and the gun-wielding McCloskeys bash Biden.

IMHO part of that increase may have been due to Fox's patchwork coverage, buttinsky talking heads, especially Brayzille, and Williams, et. al. Deciding what we wanted to watch, and missing the early speakers.

We foolishly tried to watch on Fox News. Hannity and whoever runs his program destroyed the event by cutting into various speakers with “commentary” from various Hannity regular guests. Big mistake …. We moved over to CSpan. Will go there for the rest of the Convention. Shame on Fox...

Production values, even without an audience, far superior to Dems. Plus, the speakers not being aggrieved whiny losers also made a difference.

Only saw the last night of the Dems' convention to see what Biden had to say, but Julia Louis-Dreyfuss' pathetic attempts at humor and the also ran's chatfest nearly drove me back to comedy reruns on MeTV. By comparison, the first night of the RNC made me wanting to come back for more tonight.

At least some of those numbers reflect the higher interest and excitement surrounding the Trump campaign. The only reason the dems really have for voting for them is that they hate Trump and they want to get control of the government back. The rest of it is the typical dem whine about issues that they say have existed for a long time but the dems have never done anything about when they have been in power before. If racism is really a problem, Socialism will NOT fix it. If fair treatment of women is an issue, Socialism is about power and control and men are more dominant under Socialist conditions and they do NOT share power. Socialism DOES equalize opportunity. Everyone has a lousy job and low pay. Misery for all. Americans aren't as stupid as dems think they are.

It seems increasingly likely that Hurricane Laura will continue to intensify on Tuesday and Wednesday before making landfall along the upper Texas coast, or possibly southwestern Louisiana, early on Thursday. Of all the many named storms in 2020—and we are on the "L" storm already with the early September peak of the Atlantic hurricane season still looming—this one has the potential to wreak the most widespread devastation yet. This is because Laura will likely become a major hurricane before landfall, reaching Category 3 status, and could potentially strike the populous Houston metro area. That happens to be where I live, in a home about 15 miles from the coast.

Statues starting coming down in June. It’s mid-August, and the "peaceful protestors" are roaming through residential neighbourhoods yelling at people in their homes. We heard from activists and agitators that the statues had to come down, that they were symbols of an unsavory past and could not blight our town centers any longer. In dozens of instances, the statues came down, but the protestors have not been appeased. Protestors are no longer intent on destroying statues and public property; they are now moving on to people. We hear so often that property damage isn't violence.

When federal agent Jim Reed drove in to a small airport in the East Texas city of Athens mid-morning on September 15, 2014, he was expecting to find a straightforward case of arson—an easy case for the new guy. He introduced himself to the Athens Jet Center’s co-owners, two brothers in their seventies named Wayne and Gaylon Addkison, who led Reed to a small jet, a 1971 Cessna 500 Citation I, that looked like it had been barbecued on a rotisserie. “It was burned in half,” Wayne Addkison recalled. “The nose tipped on the ground and the back half was on the ground too.”

In the 1970s and ‘80s, NASA had a serious marketing problem. The glory years of the moon landings were over, and the Space Shuttle, initially fascinating to the public, became a routine, in-the-background news story, until it wasn’t, when the Challenger exploded in 1986. NASA was sitting on hundreds of hours of film shot by the astronauts on converted U.S. Air Force aircraft gun cameras during the lunar missions, which it meticulously kept stored in climate-controlled conditions, but the public rarely saw this footage. Enter Al Reinert (1947-2018), a former journalist who had covered Apollo 17, the last moon landing, for the Houston Chronicle.

A new study published to the journal Scientific Reports suggests that moderate alcohol consumption is associated with slightly decreased brain volume. Scientists have long known that heavy alcohol use shrinks the brain, but it's not clear whether or not moderate drinking has a similar effect. Researchers from the University of Helsinki in Finland explored the possible link within a sample of 353 Finnish men and women aged 39 to 45. On average, the subject group reported moderate alcohol consumption, indicated by an AUDIT-C score of 3.92. Such a score is roughly equivalent to drinking two to four times a month, having between three and four drinks a session,

Because last week also marked the 29th anniversary of the Crown Heights riots, it’s worth it to stop and recall that among his many distinctions—MSNBC pundit, and an adviser who reportedly regularly speaks to Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden, collector of innumerable sateen suits—Al Sharpton is also currently America’s only living pogrom leader.

The virtual campaign of a basement “Rose Garden strategy” will be forced out into the open. Then the real fun will begin. Although the return to fall and the start of the final leg of the campaign won’t be like anything we’ve seen before, one thing is still certain: Campaigns are won on the ground. The blocking and tackling of presidential politics is what it takes to emerge victorious.

Periods may be coming to a full stop. While older texters may consider the period an innocent symbol that a sentence has ended, digital natives consider it a triggering form of aggression. The punctuation problem ignited over social media recently, with Gen Z and millennials agreeing that ending a sentence with a period is overly hostile and, worse yet, extremely uncool. “Only old people or troubled souls put periods at the end of every sentence,” wrote digital culture journalist Victoria Turk in her book on digital etiquette “Kill Reply All.”   Corrections*

But that’s the plan at the beginning.” It appears that there will be no flags on the field and the flag will only appear on electronic scoreboards during the playing of the national anthem, at least for the beginning of the season.
