Moderate Drinking May Shrink Your
Brain by a Percent. Is It Worth It?

A new study published to the journal Scientific Reports suggests that moderate alcohol consumption is associated with slightly decreased brain volume. Scientists have long known that heavy alcohol use shrinks the brain, but it's not clear whether or not moderate drinking has a similar effect. Researchers from the University of Helsinki in Finland explored the possible link within a sample of 353 Finnish men and women aged 39 to 45. On average, the subject group reported moderate alcohol consumption, indicated by an AUDIT-C score of 3.92. Such a score is roughly equivalent to drinking two to four times a month, having between three and four drinks a session,

This is the kind of headline about some "scientific" study that eventually gets debunked or rejected by peers perhaps a year later and there is little news coverage of the rejection. The brain normally shrinks as we age. Some nerves in the face and neck can get pulled tighter because of this shrinkage. Neurologists often have patients with maladies caused by this nerve tightening. See: Toscanini's Fumble by Harold Klawans. And if you like that one a really fun one is The Man Who Mistook His Wife For A Hat written by Oliver Sacks. The neurologist who career was portrayed by Robbin Williams in Awakening.

Interesting fact: Alcohol has been used for millennia as a solvent for making medicinal plants into tinctures. It actually works to extract the medicinal compounds from the plant—thereby making the tincture more effective—and it is also one of the best preservatives.

I don't drink alcohol, at all. Gave it up at age 19 after trying it for a bit. Didn't like the taste of any of it, didn't like what it did to me, couldn't see why I would do it. Friends told me "the beer in Europe is wonderful, you HAVE to try it". So I did. Lots of local German beers, English beers, Italian wines.....each got about two sips out of a glass before I realized that I just don't like any of it. Not any kind of anti-drinking crusader about it, never try to talk anyone out of it, just don't like it. Kinda like a few foods I don't eat, fine if you want to eat it, but I won't. Easy because my wife is the same way, can't stand the taste. She worked as a bartender for a while in college, used to mix a lot of drinks....never drank any.

The converse is equally true, #31 -- never drink with a man you don't trust. If moderate drinking shrinks the brain by 1% per-year, then wait to start until you're about 50 and you should be fine. If it shrinks by 1% per-week, that's different... The article didn't say how long it took to shrink the brain by 1%. And I would say that omission is enough to strip the web site of its name, for false advertising. Leaving out a critical unit of measure in statatistical analysis is neither real, nor clear. And it sure as hell ain't science.

The death of Harry Dunn, an English teenager who was killed on August 27 2019, sparked a “bitter diplomatic row” between Great Britain and the United States. At the center of this row is the concept of “diplomatic immunity.” While riding his motorcycle, Dunn was killed in a head on collision with an SUV near RAF Croughton, a military base used by the U.S. Air Force. British police identified the driver as Anne Sacoolas — the wife of an American diplomat — and said that she was driving “on the wrong side of the road” when the collision occurred. A diplomatic row exploded when, after “British prosecutors charged her with causing death

The Arkansas Supreme Court on Tuesday ruled that Democrat Jimmie Wilson is ineligible to serve in the state Legislature due to decades-old misdemeanor convictions in federal court, wiping out Wilson's victory at the polls earlier this month in House District 12. Wilson, a former state lawmaker who was convicted of selling mortgaged crops and illegal use of farm loans, had argued that a pardon he received from President Bill Clinton in 2001 removed any barriers to his potential return to the Legislature. Running against Republican David Tollett, Wilson received more than 52% of the vote in the Nov. 3 election. A unanimous decision by the high court, however, held that the pardon

This year’s lineup most fowl includes a deep-pocketed presidential candidate, well-funded Senate candidates, ideologically-out-of-step Democratic recruits, and an appointed GOP senator who lost two straight elections in a traditionally Republican state. 1. Trump needs to have overwhelming evidence of election fraud, and he needs to bring that evidence to light in very public hearings. Without such evidence, his claims won’t be taken seriously enough—by the press or a sufficient number of the electorate—to ensure a peaceful transition to a second term. The rush job to affirm Biden as president-elect by the media and the Democrat Party is not constitutionally required, and indeed smacks of a kind of desperation to avoid scrutiny. Contrary to their claims, Trump’s thorough investigation of potential large-scale election fraud is fully in accord with the Constitution. As the one in whom executive power is vested,

There’s something unattractive about a mature woman marrying into the British Royal family with one of the world’s most expensive weddings, hanging out with the Queen, living in insane luxury…and then whining non-stop about the horror of her life. There’s something even less appealing when that woman accuses the Royal family of race hatred.
