A new study published to the journal Scientific Reports suggests that moderate alcohol consumption is associated with slightly decreased brain volume.
Scientists have long known that heavy alcohol use shrinks the brain, but it's not clear whether or not moderate drinking has a similar effect.
Researchers from the University of Helsinki in Finland explored the possible link within a sample of 353 Finnish men and women aged 39 to 45. On average, the subject group reported moderate alcohol consumption, indicated by an AUDIT-C score of 3.92. Such a score is roughly equivalent to drinking two to four times a month, having between three and four drinks a session,

This is the kind of headline about some "scientific" study that eventually gets debunked or rejected by peers perhaps a year later and there is little news coverage of the rejection.
The brain normally shrinks as we age. Some nerves in the face and neck can get pulled tighter because of this shrinkage. Neurologists often have patients with maladies caused by this nerve tightening.
See: Toscanini's Fumble by Harold Klawans. And if you like that one a really fun one is The Man Who Mistook His Wife For A Hat written by Oliver Sacks. The neurologist who career was portrayed by Robbin Williams in Awakening.

Interesting fact: Alcohol has been used for millennia as a solvent for making medicinal plants into tinctures. It actually works to extract the medicinal compounds from the plant—thereby making the tincture more effective—and it is also one of the best preservatives.

And of course at 1 percent it kind of depends on how much you start with. Outlaw alcohol for idiots and you'll have a dry Dem convention.

I don't drink alcohol, at all. Gave it up at age 19 after trying it for a bit. Didn't like the taste of any of it, didn't like what it did to me, couldn't see why I would do it. Friends told me "the beer in Europe is wonderful, you HAVE to try it". So I did. Lots of local German beers, English beers, Italian wines.....each got about two sips out of a glass before I realized that I just don't like any of it.
Not any kind of anti-drinking crusader about it, never try to talk anyone out of it, just don't like it. Kinda like a few foods I don't eat, fine if you want to eat it, but I won't. Easy because my wife is the same way, can't stand the taste. She worked as a bartender for a while in college, used to mix a lot of drinks....never drank any.

Not buying this at all. Especially since a glass of wine with meals is mentioned in the Bible, along with the fact that turning water into the finest wine the wedding guests ever tasted was the first miracle of Jesus.

The converse is equally true, #31 -- never drink with a man you don't trust.
If moderate drinking shrinks the brain by 1% per-year, then wait to start until you're about 50 and you should be fine.
If it shrinks by 1% per-week, that's different...
The article didn't say how long it took to shrink the brain by 1%. And I would say that omission is enough to strip the web site of its name, for false advertising. Leaving out a critical unit of measure in statatistical analysis is neither real, nor clear. And it sure as hell ain't science.
