Nearly six thousand Americans renounced their citizenship in the first six months of 2020, a massive increase over the previous six monthThe numbers were reported by Bambridge Accountants New York, a firm which specializes in taxes for United Kingdom expatriates and U.S. citizens, which reviewed a government list of Americans who have renounced their citizenship. An IRS rule requires the government to publish these names every three months. In the first six months of 2020, a whopping 5,816 Americans renounced their citizenship, more than twice the number who renounced in all of 2019.

If that means they can no longer vote, then all I can say is, "Don't let the door hit you in the ass on your way out.

What they don’t tell you is the vast majority of the people who supposedly are renouncing their US citizenship also hold citizenship in some other country, they have to or they would be stateless, would have no passport, and therefore for the most part would be unable to travel internationally, in actuality most of them are still holding the citizenship of the foreign country where they were actually born. Such people are often referred to as being duel-citizens or duel-nationals. The reason they took out naturalized US citizenship in the first place usually was for matters of convenience, like being able to travel to and from the USA as a US citizen exempt from any restrictions imposed by the immigration laws thus able to come and go from the USA as they wish. Who the President of the USA is does not matter to them.

I just don't understand the reasoning of some people. Once you have renounced your US citizenship, you cannot EVER get it back.
When the purple-lipped blunder was in office, I was pizzed most of the time, but I dealt with it like an adult. I would have NEVER even considered giving up my citizenship. This country may have issues, but it is still the greatest country on earth!! We have the most rights and the most freedoms of ANY country on earth!! And most of all, millions of people are currently waiting in line and spending copious amounts of money to emigrate here.
If these morons want to find another country to live in based on a temper tantrum, then I say "See ya. Wouldn't want to be ya!! And we WON'T leave the lights on!!"

Less names on the vote by mail list. Attention GOP officials, if their name shows up voting time someone should get locked up.

This reminds me of the time when I was about four years old and decided to teach my parents a lesson by running away from home. To the backyard.
And then I noticed they didn’t care because (1) I had nowhere to go and (2) they were great parents and I would have been out of my mind to really try to leave.

Most people who renounce their US citizenship do so for financial reasons. They are either high income earners or have inherited money and don't want to be responsible for high taxes, even though the US will tax them for a certain period after they leave, but eventually, they will not be obligated to pay. And if you live abroad and earn an income, the first $107,000 is tax exempt anyway, and you can also deduct the cost of housing. Not a bad deal for high income earners who don't have to live in the USA.

Many US citizens reside, consume services, and pay taxes in another country. The United States government, almost alone among the world's governments, requires all of its citizens to file tax returns even when they live in another tax jurisdiction and are fully taxed there. So, not only do US citizens living abroad always have to file two tax returns; they often find themselves exposed to additional taxation and risk as a result.
This is stupid for many reasons, the most obvious being that US citizens living abroad are not living in the United States and are consuming fewer of the benefits and services supposedly funded by paying taxes. Second, filing an additional tax return for those who have zero US taxable income wastes everyone's time and money. Third, because tax rates are often higher in other countries, foreign income tax credits can negate the US taxes entirely and allow the US citizen to, in effect, store up credits to use against future taxes.
It's a complicated, stupid shell game and every American living abroad is subjected to it. Dual citizens are unique only in that they have the option to renounce their US citizenship and stop playing it.
Most don't. I take that as a compliment to everything else America is despite its sometimes unpleasant federal bureaucracy and taxation rules.
