Woodside, Queens—Oliver Neligan, a World War II veteran and retired MTA worker, was on his way to Sunday morning mass when he noticed a man following him from the deli where he just picked up his morning coffee. Neligan left the shop at the corner of 60th Street and Queens Boulevard in Woodside, heading for 8 a.m. service at Saint Sebastian Catholic Church, just about six blocks away. "When I went to take a sip of my coffee, he jumped me from the back and put his hands around my neck," the 84-year-old Irish immigrant recalled.
84 year-old WWII Veteran? He would have been born in 1935 or 1936!

Way to go Mr. Neligan, but at 84yrs. he may be a veteran but not a WW2 one.

Those darn Amish strike again. You'd think they'd be easy to spot, what with the horse-drawn buggies and all.

He had to be older than 84. I'm 89 and I was 10 Dec 7 and turned 11 Jan 18 when WWII started. He would have been about 5.

In 1945 he would have been 10 years old. He isn't old enough to be a Korean war vet.

#5, Mrs. Lakerman worked for a physician who, at age 15, joined the army (altered his birth certificate) fought in the Korean War, returned to the U.S., went to college and medical school, and, as far as we know, is still practicing medicine in another state.

An 84-year old WWII (Korean War??) veteran had to do this. Does not matter. Oliver, you go, sir. And thank you for your service. A question for our millennials - you brave enough to strip off their mask when attacked?

I didn't know the Army or the Marines or Navy were drafting or accepting 5 and 6 year olds during WWII.

Maybe they meant 94?

Good on him! One is never too old to make a monkey out of a frisky "teen." The sense of entitlement outweighs good judgement and that's a fatal mistake. I have a video somewhere of a 72 year old Vietnam vet beating a mouthy "teen" bloody on a NYC subway car after the kid threatened him. Tears were mixed in with the blood all over his face.

De Blasio now has a new crime prevention plan -- defund the police and issue each NYC resident a cup of hot coffee.

I see many on here also questioned the WWII part. Maybe Korean war, but not WWII.

Journalists stink at both math and history, something I notice all the time , they never do the simple calculation also true of screenwriters. My question is did DiBalsio have the victim arrested for obstructing a robbery?

There’s a heartwarming story from long ago about a couple of punks who tried to mug a 70 something Jack Dempsey.

He's either not a WW2 vet, or not 84.
If 84, he was 9 when the war ended.

Ms. Murphy we like your article but really we need to make fun of your math abilities just a little.
Perhaps you were conned by the "veteran" and he lied about his war experience.
But you should have done the math.
One can't serve in the military until they are 18.
2020-84 = 1936. 1936 + 18 = 1954. Which is about 10 years after WWII ended.
Could it be the veteran was actually 94 and born in 1926?
In that case he could have just barely served in WWII at age 18 in 1944.
But at age 94 fighting off a mugger would make a super headline carried all over the world.
Or perhaps he was a veteran of the Korean war?
1936 + 18 = 1954 which is one year after Korean war ended. Nope. Doesn't add up either.
Or perhaps he lied about his age to you and he's really in his 90's doesn't want to appear to be
too old to pickup the younger ladies.
So Ms. Murphy, did he hit on you?

Reporters apparently can't conjugate math anymore. Maybe the reporter needed a ream of paper to do the new math and it wasn't available to him.

The man says senior citizens cannot even walk home safely from church because Mayor Warren Wilhelm, alias Bill de Blasio, is housing either freed criminals or homeless people in nearby motels. No description given of the African seen trailing him in the photo, even though the caption credits the photo to the NYPD. Guess it's a given.
