DOUGLAS COUNTY, Colo. (KDVR) — Kendrick Castillo’s parents spoke ahead of his confessed killer’s sentencing Friday afternoon. Castillo was killed in the STEM School Highlands Ranch shooting in May 2019. Eight others were wounded. In February, 17-year-old Alec McKinney pleaded guilty to 17 charges related to the shooting. Devon Erickson, 19, is accused of carrying out the shooting alongside McKinney. Before McKinney’s sentencing, the court heard victim impact statements from a number of people, including Castillo’s parents. John Castillo, Kendrick’s father, recalled the last time he saw his son: the morning of May 7, 2019.

Comments:

I'm with the parents on this case - a mentally-ill freak killed their only son. Their lives are ruined.

I applaud them for their honesty. People keep killing and their excuse is mental illness. When are we going to talk about mental illness and put them somewhere they will not hurt others before they do it?

As the wooden boards are taken down from shopfronts and studio lots grind slowly back to life, Hollywood is basking in an unseasonable heatwave. The famous boulevards shimmer in 40C haze and warm Santa Ana winds fan the Beverly Hills mansions. Shaken by #MeToo, paralysed by Covid-19, the $50 billion film industry is finally emerging from a four-month lockdown – only to find a new and very different world, where tension is rising as surely as the thermometer.

A 1940s-era bus where a 24-year-old adventurer starved to death in the Alaskan wilderness has been removed after tourists died while trying to reach it. A US Army helicopter airlifted the vehicle from the spot just west of the Teklanika River, where it had been left to rust for more than half a century. The bus was made famous by Into The Wild, a book and film that told the story of Chris McCandless' death after he lived inside it for 114 days during the summer of 1992.

CAPITOL HILL AUTONOMOUS ZONE (CHAZ) — The residential area in Seattle taken over by protesters and dubbed the “Capitol Hill Autonomous Zone” (CHAZ) may have block party vibes, but it is punctuated with power struggles and infighting. The Daily Caller had reporters on the ground in CHAZ, the roughly six-block neighborhood that has been deemed a cop-free zone by activists. The area includes Seattle Police Department’s East Precinct, which was abandoned before a few cops returned and were “assessing the building” Thursday.   Correction*

A Virginia man who was struck by a falling Confederate statue during a protest flatlined twice on the way to the hospital and was placed in a coma, according to his wife. Chris Green, 45, of Portsmouth, was one of the hundreds of Virginians who descended onto the streets Wednesday to protest police brutality and the death of George Floyd, an African-American man who died while in police custody. Protesters rallied at the Confederate monument in Olde Towne Portsmouth after the City Council earlier that night put off decisions on potentially removing the statue. DENVER (AP) — Backers of a proposed initiative to ban abortions at 22 weeks in Colorado have collected enough signatures to put the measure on the November ballot, the secretary of state’s office said Monday. The group behind the initiative, Due Date Too Late, collected 153,204 valid voter signatures, more than the 124,632 signatures required, the secretary’s office said. The proposal on what proponents call late-term abortions would make it illegal for anyone to perform an abortion when a fetus is at 22 weeks of gestation or later.

Former president George W. Bush released a curious statement on Tuesday addressing the riots across the country: It remains a shocking failure that many African Americans, especially young African American men, are harassed and threatened in their own country…. This tragedy, in a long series of similar tragedies, raises a long overdue question: How do we end systemic racism in our society?… The doctrine and habits of racial superiority, which once nearly split our country, still threaten our Union. Bush may have meant well, but his words, being inaccurate, aren’t doing Americans any favors. As Heather Mac Donald wrote recently in City Journal,

Why is this case the one inciting mass protests? Ninety-nine percent of the country is denouncing the Minneapolis police in the most damnable terms possible over the death of George Floyd. The 99% are demanding that the 1% “hear their voices”? The arrest certainly looks awful. Everything is going along relatively peacefully as Floyd is walked to a police van, then there’s some commotion out of sight of the camera — and suddenly you see Floyd pinned to the ground, an officer’s knee on his neck. How did that happen? One reason some of us are waiting for all the facts is that we suspect the media

Fox News host Tucker Carlson said during his show on Friday that once-conservative news aggregator Matt Drudge of “The Drudge Report” is “now firmly a man of the progressive Left,” noting that his site has taken on a decidedly anti-President Trump bent in recent months.“For decades, Matt Drudge was one of the most influential figures in conservative journalism. His self-titled Drudge Report broke news and set priorities in digital media,” Carlson said as he began a segment with Drudge biographer Matthew Lysiak.“Republican presidential candidates made wooing the famously secretive Drudge a high priority,” he continued. “And for several of them it paid off big, including Donald Trump.”

Despite the occasional looting, chaos, property damage, trespassing, rioting, graffiti, assaults, arson and general mayhem, the media consistently assure us that antifa “protesters” are “largely peaceful.” And since the majority of buildings in Portland, Seattle and Denver haven’t been looted yet, who am I to argue?Of course, it takes only a sliver of the population to transform downtowns into a mess and create quality-of-life issues for thousands of law-abiding citizens. And the mayors who surrender parts of their cities to left-wing “protesters” are tacitly endorsing lawlessness themselves. There’s little doubt that if alt-right activists
