MINNEAPOLIS — A Twin Cities woman says she was harassed last week on her coffee run at a Target store in St. Paul. Nineteen-year-old Aishah says she and a friend went to get a coffee inside the Midway Target’s Starbucks booth, which is managed by the Minnesota-based company. She said before she could finish telling the employee behind the counter her name, she saw the employee write something on the side of the cup and hide it from view. She got the beverage, which read “ISIS.” “When I first received the drink I was in shock that in a day

I have a common, Anglo, four-letter, male first name. Last week the barista wrote a female name that sounded similar. The reporter pronounced her name Aeesa. Not a big surprise.

I'd like to hear how she pronounces her name (a recording of it from before this alleged incident, please). My name is Jim, about as basic as it gets, but sometimes it gets written down as something else. Servers are in a hurry, there is lots of background noise, etc. Given the state of our education system and media, it's possible that the employee doesn't even know what ISIS is (was?). Does every professional offense taker have their local TV news station on speed dial or something?

Why, should they have written MB instead? It's hard to keep the faction fighting straight since they all seem the same to me, too.

My name is Kurt. People often spell it Kirt, or Kirk. I have never gone into shock because of a misspelling.

I don't know if this is the same person or not, but the exact same thing happened about a year ago, causing a big kerfluffle for a few days and a CAIR fatwa against Starbucks ... I think the name is the exact same thing, or very close; One which pronounced with an accent, or in a somewhat noisy environment could easily be heard as ISIS. And might not even be interpreted as a muslim thing at all, since Isis is an ancient Egyptian Goddess, long predating Mohammed, and also has dozens of other non-muslim related uses.
Probably a setup, hoping for a payoff, or at least 15 minutes of minor fame.

Heh, I just remembered, in the old Battlestar Galactica show, one of the main characters was Starbuck, and one of the minor characters was Isis.

Some minorities are just looking for a reason to be offended.
If true, the busy server likely wrote the name phonetically rather than try to remember the pronounciation. My surname is difficult so if someone wrote it phonetically I would not be offended. In fact I have used homophones to help.

one way to solve this problem is to get your coffee at Dunkin Donuts or McDonald's. Their coffee is much better and cheaper than Starbucks.
