It’s all about the Benjamins. A couple of Republican senators rolled out a proposal Wednesday to cancel Columbus Day and replace it with Juneteenth, saying they don’t want to just list both dates as federal holidays because that would “put us further in debt.” Sens. Ron Johnson of Wisconsin and James Lankford of Oklahoma made the fiscally hawkish suggestion in an amendment to a bipartisan bill that would make Juneteenth a federal holiday commemorating the end of slavery without tinkering with Columbus Day.(Snip) Rather, Johnson said he and Lankford picked Columbus Day because it’s “lightly celebrated” and its cancellation would be “least disruptive

Columbus Day was the only holiday they could pick? How about Labor day?

While Juneteenth is certainly a laudable celebration, not under threat of violence. Any Republican that yields to the noisy mob will not have a job come next election.
Never under threat of violence!!
And I'd be perfectly happy if these 'peaceful' mobs who have caused millions in damages, faced armed citizens - a militia, in fact - ready to end them for any action that is not actually peaceful and civilized.

I'm all for a reduction in the number of paid federal holidays. It is my money after all and could certainly be better spent than on overpaid fed employees.

Let's celebrate the day that white people ended slavery. I think this is a worthy holiday.
BTW - slavery is back. 49 million last count. Most are in India, then China and many many Africa.

Lousy, rotten NY Daily News is now a pay site.
That will be the day I ever give those Leftist rat bastids any money.
The weakling proposal to replace Columbus Day--a real holiday based on a real person with an amazing contribution to the world--with Juneteenth Date--which is a made-up holiday which has no significance outside of Texas and is a celebration of when they finally learned of the Emancipation Proclamation, 2 years after the fact--is a non-starter.
As an Italian American, I am insulted

Until this year most of the US didn't even know what "Juneteenth" was. It is very specific to Texas and the surrounding area. It certainly is not event worth getting a federal holiday.

Republican 'leaders' doing what they do best: Following Democrat direction. Once again the Republicans fail to show leadership and offer an alternative to the Democrats. The Republicans have got to do better.

I like how the GOP beat the Dems to this idea. Once again, the Dems are only looking for how this might help them politically not how to solve any of the problems.
After all, they keep mentioning institutional racism, which means our government entities, right? Who is always advocating for more and more government? Democrats, right? Who set up all of those departments and agencies?
Lastly, heard someone mention that in the 1619 project neither Martin Luther King, or Fredrick Douglass are included. Believe MLK was a Republican, was Fredrick Douglass too? Or, did they not fit the story they wanted to tell?

No one sends Columbus Day cards or has big parties in bars.
But you can bet Hallmark starts churning out cards and Budweiser starts promoting this like Cinco de Mayo.
There's money to be made here off the gullible.

And this is what we get from Republicans. Seriously, Lankford and Johnson, have you lost your minds? This is what those that voted for you get? Do you idiots ever work on anything anywhere related to your jobs? Do you even have any concept of what your duties are? Apparently not.

Also, #12, its even specific to particular parts of our huge state. I have met lots of native Texans who have heard OF it but it was never emphasized or celebrated with much fanfare where they lived. These goofy Republicans picking lint out of their navels while the country has MAJOR problems. Gosh they are so embarrassing!!

My vote for Donald Trump in November will be my last vote ever. Once he is out of office the Uniparty will run wild and we won't find any friendlies on either side of the aisle. I will pick my own holidays, thank you.

I'd prefer a Leif Erikson Day along with some fierce Viking statues to replace the Columbus statues that have been destroyed or hidden from public view.

Hubby and I always celebrate Columbus Day - it’s the day we got engaged in 1980. Though the date of the official celebration changes from year to year, we got engaged on October 12 which is the date of Columbus’ arrival in the new world.

Whenever the chips are down, there's always a Helpful Republican ready to lend a helping hand. How many special holidays are granted to bolster the fragile self-esteem of bLACK people? We already have MLK Day, Kwanzaa, and Black History Month, versus a single day for veterans and a single day for every US president. How about releasing whatever's hiding in MLK's FBI files and swap out MLK Day with the silly Juneteenth, if we must?
