There is growing outrage over calls by activists, historians and journalists to replace The Star Spangled Banner as the national anthem because it was written by slave owner Francis Scott Key, and potentially replace it with John Lennon's Imagine. Historian Daniel E. Walker and activist and journalist Kevin Powell made the remarks in an article written by Yahoo Music Editor Lyndsey Parker titled 'Why it might be time to finally replace The Star-Spangled Banner with a new national anthem'. They say that because the song was written by Francis Scott Key, a white slave owner who made overtly racist remarks, it is no longer appropriate Correction*

Let's imagine there's no John Lennon.

I'm anxiously awaiting the first time the Palookas link arms and sing "Imagine" at a Yankees/Mets game in The Bronx.

I will never stand for that reprehensible communist's work. I will mock it, demean it and despise it. Lennon was a talented man but a lazy, ignoramus with anything outside of music.
America the Beautiful... Our Country tis of Thee... Frankly, I'd accept "Dixie" (written by a Black man, by the way) before I would take Lennon's drug-addled trash.

Better yet, let's imagine there was never a Democrat party. There would be no slavery in the U.S.and no civil war.
Imagine something meaningful for a change.

Just saw some soccer team will replace The Star Spangled Banner with This Land is Your Land -- by Woody Guthrie, a well-known communist/socialist. Lovely!

Lennon was a hypocrite. "Imagine no possessions, I wonder if you can". His net worth was estimated at $800 million at the time of his death.

#4 Commenter: You might want to update your notes. The writer of "Dixie" was Daniel Emmett (1815-1904) and he was NOT black.

No, we are not changing our national anthem to appease the America haters. They do not form even a close majority in this country. How dare they even suggest it. If our gutless politicians weren’t so terrified In a election year of somehow offending black people perhaps they could get off their useless asses and defend our country.

This crap is as stupid as saying that England's "God Save The Queen" is homophobic because "Queen" is a derogatory word for a gay person!!
I suggest an addendum to the Star Spangled Banner - "Get Over It" by the Eagles!!

Change the anthem to 'God Damn America' and all the critics will be happy.
Just because somebody is running their mouth doesn't mean we should all listen to them, or take them seriously, and certainly not do what they say.

"Imagine" is a song with pretty chords and a horrible, horrible message.
Imagine, no Heaven.
Imagine, no countries.
Imagine, no religion.
No faith, no patriotism, no possessions, just believe in POLITICS. This song, and all who mindlessly & whimsically it, are POISON. Sorry, John L., but this one was not inspirational at all.

Now that I hear that Key was a slave owner--love the anthem even more. Folks-maybe the new anthem s/b from A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Form--Everybody ought to have maid. Not any more a dumb idea than anything written by John Lennon--a great American patriot---
not.

I love the Beatles and a little bit of Lennon's solo output, but I've always hated that song. Syrupy, repetitive melody and idiotic lyrics, a recipe for a worldwide Venezuela. Even Lennon couldn't figure out why people liked it and admitted it was basically "The Communist Manifesto" set to not-very-good music. BTW, whenever I see an "Imagine World Peace" bumper sticker, it makes me want to find one that says, "Imagine World Peace...And see how much good it does."

Imagine is the worst song ever written! At a theological and a basic human level it is a song of futility and no hope for the condition of man! But, if a catchy tune grabs one who doesn’t have core beliefs...it works! I detest the song and always have!

Not going to happen. Many of us have ancestors dating back before statehood and before slavery. Our ancestors lived, planted, harvested, fought, and died for our beloved America. She isn’t perfect, but neither are we. America is the collective us and at the end of this battle, our flag will still stand over the land of the free and the home of the brave. 🇺🇸

Certainly no longer appropriate for Fundamentally Transformed America. How about "I'm Coming Out" from Diana Ross, or "I Will Survive" from Gloria Gaynor, the latter described as the Gay National Anthem? Or maybe "Say It Loud, I'm bLACK and Proud" by James Brown?
