Some prominent U.S. businesses are giving workers June 19 as a paid day off, a gesture to recognize the liberation of slaves during the Civil War. Twitter, Nike and the NFL announced this week they would observe Juneteenth – the day 155 years ago that African-Americans in Texas learned they were free from slavery. Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey said Tuesday that Juneteenth will be "a day for celebration, education and connection" at the company. Dorsey's other company, mobile payment provider Square, also will make Juneteenth a paid company holiday, he said. Nike CEO John Donahoe said Thursday that recognizing Juneteenth is

Starbucks said Friday that the chain would allow workers to wear attire and accessories highlighting the Black Lives Matter movement, reversing its prior stance after social media users called for boycotts of the company. Buzzfeed first reported on Wednesday that the coffee chain would not allow its employees to wear Black Lives Matter clothing or accessories, and management justified the decision by saying that such items could be misunderstood and incite violence. While Starbucks has a policy against wearing personal, political or religious clothing or accessories, workers told Buzzfeed that the company hands out buttons and attire celebrating LGBTQ rights

Strong majorities of Americans oppose the movement to "defund the police" and some of its most significant goals, specifically reshuffling funding away from law enforcement to support mental health, housing and education programs, a new ABC News/Ipsos poll released Friday finds. Nearly two-thirds of Americans oppose calls for defunding police departments, compared to 34% who back the movement, and 60% specifically oppose reducing the budget for police to reallocate it to other public health and social programs, while 39% support that move. But black Americans land differently on the issue, though not overwhelmingly so.

The BBC slipped up during news coverage of George Floyd’s funeral with an image of another George Floyd used to illustrate the black man killed in Minneapolis police custody last month. BBC News’ mistake came late on Tuesday night as it reported on the funeral service for the 46-year-old Houston native that had taken place in his hometown, some hours earlier. Viewers on the BBC News channel were shown an image of the former New York Jets American footballer George Floyd, instead of the man whose death has sparked demonstrations against racism and police brutality around the world. Former Georgia gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams said she has “not received any calls” from the Biden campaign about vetting her as a potential vice presidential pick. Late-night host Stephen Colbert asked Abrams on “The Late Show” Wednesday whether she could confirm or deny rumors that she was being considered as Joe Biden’s running mate. He cited CNN political analyst April Ryan as having said Abrams was being vetted. “I have said many times that if called I will answer, but I have not received any calls,” Abrams said. “Though I look forward to hearing from whomever April Ryan is speaking to.”

CLEVELAND, Ohio - Remember Sambo's? For decades, the infamously named restaurant was ubiquitous with more than 1,100 locations throughout the country. It’s down to one final restaurant, which announced it is changing its name in light of protests over the death of George Floyd. The killing of Floyd, an African-American man in Minneapolis, by the hands of police, has spurred protests across the country while sparking conversation and dialogue over race. And last week, the owners of the original Sambo's in Santa Barbara, California, announced it would change the name of its restaurant, which opened almost exactly 63 years ago.

Mayor Lori Lightfoot announced Wednesday a new fund that will give $1,000 per household to Chicago residents - including undocumented immigrants, college students and more - who were excluded from federal coronavirus relief payments that were distributed earlier this year. Under the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act, the federal government in mid-April began making payments of $1,200 to millions of Americans who have a social security number and earned less than $75,000 per year based on their 2019 tax filing. Millions of undocumented immigrants, many who pay taxes using what’s known as a taxpayer identification number, were

VATICAN CITY — Pope Francis called George Floyd by name, twice, and offered support to an American bishop who knelt in prayer during a Black Lives Matter protest. (Snip) Francis “wants to send a very clear message to these conservative Catholics here who are pro-Trumpers that, ‘Listen, this is just as much of an issue as abortion is,’” said Anthea Butler, a presidential visiting fellow at Yale Divinity School. Butler, who is African American, said the Vatican is telling Catholics “to pay attention to the racism that is happening and the racism that is in your own church in America.

WEST HOLLYWOOD — Organizers of the annual Los Angeles Pride festival said Tuesday that they would no longer be involved in the organization of an anti-racism solidarity march planned for Sunday, but would still participate and support the All Black Lives Matter event. In a social media post Monday, officials said they failed to coordinate with Black Lives Matter leaders before publicly announcing a solidarity march scheduled to take place on what would have been the date of the 2020 L.A. Pride Parade. “For that, we apologize to the Black Lives Matter organizers,” officials said in the post. “Conversations did

During some of the most threatening times in our nation’s history — when circumstances have required a leader whose skills and experiences match the challenges confronting us — Americans have always had a knack for finding just the right person at the exactly the right time. In considering his running mate for the upcoming presidential election, former vice president Joe Biden may be contemplating such a scenario. As a bitterly divided America confronts the social unrest spurred by George Floyd’s murder and the seemingly endless loop of sickening cell phone videos showing similar acts of violence, there is one candidate

Murders and shootings reportedly are on the rise in New York City. In the weeklong period from last Monday to Sunday night, there were 13 murders across the Big Apple compared to five during that time last year, law enforcement sources told the New York Post.
There were also 40 shootings – a substantial increase from the 24 during that period last year and the highest weekly total in the city since 2015, the sources added. At least one of the shootings was linked to the looting and protests sparked by the police-involved death of George Floyd, the New York Post
