Strong majorities of Americans oppose the movement to "defund the police" and some of its most significant goals, specifically reshuffling funding away from law enforcement to support mental health, housing and education programs, a new ABC News/Ipsos poll released Friday finds. Nearly two-thirds of Americans oppose calls for defunding police departments, compared to 34% who back the movement, and 60% specifically oppose reducing the budget for police to reallocate it to other public health and social programs, while 39% support that move. But black Americans land differently on the issue, though not overwhelmingly so.
A majority of black Americans
Several of my Facebook friends posted a meme which claims that it is misleading to say that "defund the police" means "eliminate funding for the police" and had a list of other things it supposedly means. I pointed out to them that the words "defund the police" literally mean the same thing as "eliminate funding for the police" and does not in any way communicate any of the other things they claim it means.

Polls are only relevant when they support liberal positions. For example, securing the borders.

There is no way that 36% of the American People are in the lunatic fringe. Some, but not nearly that many. All news is now agenda driven and all polls are lies with a purpose.

More than one-third the population is THAT stupid? I find that hard to believe. One out of three Americans are willing to have NO one come to their aid if needed?

Oh......I fully believe that over a third of the population are complete morons. Starting with a significant percentage of current college students.

ABC propaganda here. Don't watch the video as it's a waste of time. One stoopid female says, "we've been increasing funding to the police for 30, 40, 50 years and we're no safer."
Well excuse me there, Einstein, since the "Great Society" and subsequent "War on Poverty" initiative from the corrupt LBJ (D), we've paid TRILLIONS into 'po' areas and it's ALL worse today than when it started in 1964, which was 56 years ago.
Education rate - miserable
Unwed mothers - outrageous
Avg. Income - low and sinking
Welfare uptake - increasing
In other words a total dependence on Federal and State assistance with no incentive to make themselves better. A better description would be Welfare Slaves.

Don't fail to read #1's post. Since there is no answer to the "then what" after defunding, people are free to make their own leap to what they think it means. I seriously doubt that 36% want a social worker sent to help when they call 911 with an intruder pinning their family member down to the bed.
I'll bet that some communities implement a little dose of reform and a lot of new vocabulary slapped on the same police so they can claim victory, earn wokness points and votes without actually opening the door to mayhem.
I don't use Facebook but I do check out a local neighborhood site. The topic came up and Ms. Snippy admonished her neighbors for thinking that defund the police meant defund the police suggesting that others need to do their research.
It's like pinning down hope and change without the "for what" and "from what to what" defined.

Since just about everything that Democrat politicians advocate is based upon polls and designed to keep them in political power, look for Democrats politicians to back away from their grass roots proposals to abolish local police departments, and to swing into a fix it don’t end it mantra that they have used in the past. That way the Democrats can always claim that whatever police reform measures that the Republicans propose is insufficient and that they, the Democrats will always promise more.
Remember Minneapolis and the other inner cities where the Democrats claim that there is institutional racism running rampant in local police departments have been run politically by liberal Democrat politicians as far back as the Second World War. Clearly if those inner city police departments are loaded up with racist cops, the Democrat politicians holding political office in those cities have been asleep at the switch big time.

Something to remember when as you see these 'news' stories pushing polls - it's another attempt to make this a democracy rather than a republic. It's doesn't matter what the unwashed crowd feels, our constitution and the Republic it founded produced the best nation on this planet. There are processes to alter the constitution if it appears necessary, but that doesn't depend on what 'everybody else' thinks, which is something these push polls try to make the cranially-solid 'think', that they are going along with the crowd.

I don't believe 64%. Maybe 94%, but that wouldn't make good fake news!

I would venture that a substantial percentage of the remaining 36% are afraid to show their true feelings.

Every person who claims to want to "defund the police," regardless of what they think it means, should be required to ride along with a cop on a night shift on a weekend. They have no idea what these cops are faced with and how insane and violent even low-level criminals are. It's amazing to me how much abuse and injury our police are required to take just to please the fastidious sensitivities of the politicians.

I'm surprised it is that low a majority, frankly. I hope they are ready to deal with real, live anarchy. Most have no clue at what they wish for.

Big split inside the numbers. Leftist whites and a small majority of blacks support defunding police. Most Whites and Hispanics oppose.
