Murders and shootings reportedly are on the rise in New York City. In the weeklong period from last Monday to Sunday night, there were 13 murders across the Big Apple compared to five during that time last year, law enforcement sources told the New York Post. There were also 40 shootings – a substantial increase from the 24 during that period last year and the highest weekly total in the city since 2015, the sources added. At least one of the shootings was linked to the looting and protests sparked by the police-involved death of George Floyd, the New York Post

During some of the most threatening times in our nation’s history — when circumstances have required a leader whose skills and experiences match the challenges confronting us — Americans have always had a knack for finding just the right person at the exactly the right time. In considering his running mate for the upcoming presidential election, former vice president Joe Biden may be contemplating such a scenario. As a bitterly divided America confronts the social unrest spurred by George Floyd’s murder and the seemingly endless loop of sickening cell phone videos showing similar acts of violence, there is one candidate

In a ruling that could have future ramifications in the event a second wave of coronavirus strikes, a 77-year-old Michigan barber has won a legal battle against Michigan’s Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, who forced him to shutter his business. Barber Karl Manke defied shutdown orders from Whitmer and reopened his shop despite state orders prohibiting retail reopenings. Whitmer, who has drawn heavy criticism for her refusal to bend to demands on reopening businesses, subsequently pulled Manke’s license, heavily fined him, and denounced his activity. But the Michigan Supreme Court has ruled unanimously that he has the right to work. “It is

Writing at the Washington Post, author Alyssa Rosenberg has a unique solution for the problems with our policing: Cancel all the cop shows on television. She argues we need to do that because there’s a “reactionary streak” behind the “surface liberalism” in these shows. For a century, Hollywood has been collaborating with police departments, telling stories that whitewash police shootings and valorizing an action-hero style of policing over the harder, less dramatic work of building relationships with the communities cops are meant to serve and protect. There’s a reason for that beyond a reactionary streak hiding below the industry’s surface
