WEST HOLLYWOOD — Organizers of the annual Los Angeles Pride festival said Tuesday that they would no longer be involved in the organization of an anti-racism solidarity march planned for Sunday, but would still participate and support the All Black Lives Matter event. In a social media post Monday, officials said they failed to coordinate with Black Lives Matter leaders before publicly announcing a solidarity march scheduled to take place on what would have been the date of the 2020 L.A. Pride Parade. “For that, we apologize to the Black Lives Matter organizers,” officials said in the post. “Conversations did

During some of the most threatening times in our nation’s history — when circumstances have required a leader whose skills and experiences match the challenges confronting us — Americans have always had a knack for finding just the right person at the exactly the right time. In considering his running mate for the upcoming presidential election, former vice president Joe Biden may be contemplating such a scenario. As a bitterly divided America confronts the social unrest spurred by George Floyd’s murder and the seemingly endless loop of sickening cell phone videos showing similar acts of violence, there is one candidate

Murders and shootings reportedly are on the rise in New York City. In the weeklong period from last Monday to Sunday night, there were 13 murders across the Big Apple compared to five during that time last year, law enforcement sources told the New York Post.
There were also 40 shootings – a substantial increase from the 24 during that period last year and the highest weekly total in the city since 2015, the sources added. At least one of the shootings was linked to the looting and protests sparked by the police-involved death of George Floyd, the New York Post

In a ruling that could have future ramifications in the event a second wave of coronavirus strikes, a 77-year-old Michigan barber has won a legal battle against Michigan’s Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, who forced him to shutter his business. Barber Karl Manke defied shutdown orders from Whitmer and reopened his shop despite state orders prohibiting retail reopenings. Whitmer, who has drawn heavy criticism for her refusal to bend to demands on reopening businesses, subsequently pulled Manke’s license, heavily fined him, and denounced his activity. But the Michigan Supreme Court has ruled unanimously that he has the right to work. “It is

Amidst winds of change as America confronts its race issue, a reparations resolution dismissed by many as the stuff of dreams, was unanimously passed by a City Council committee Friday and is scheduled to go before the full council June 17. The resolution would establish a “Chicago Citizens of African Descent Reparations Commission” to investigate how one of the most segregated cities in the nation could best make amends for the impact of slavery. Up for discussion by the Committee on Human Relations Thursday, black and Latino aldermen called the resolution timely and necessary, in the aftermath of the cellphone-recorded

Val Demings’ meteoric rise from the Orlando Police Department to the halls of Congress and a starring role in the impeachment of President Donald Trump has reportedly landed her on the shortlist of contenders to join former Vice President Joe Biden atop the Democratic ticket this fall. But Demings’ background as a former police chief at a department that has been accused of using force excessively, including during her tenure, could prove a challenge on the national stage, particularly when people across the country are protesting in the streets against police brutality. To national Democrats, Demings is a rising star

Republican operatives are attempting to link vulnerable Democrats to progressive members’ calls to disband police departments and reduce their budgets as they look to flip key swing districts in November. Top progressive lawmakers and outside groups have called for substantial changes to the structure of U.S. law enforcement after the death of George Floyd, an unarmed black man in Minneapolis who died during an arrest after a police officer knelt on his neck. Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) tweeted Friday: “The Minneapolis Police Department has proven themselves beyond reform. It’s time to disband them and reimagine public safety in Minneapolis."

A video of a uniformed New York City police officer appearing to make a white power symbol at a George Floyd protest Saturday in New York City has prompted an internal review. The video showing the officer making the apparent "OK" hand gesture — touching the thumb and index finger to make a circle, with the remaining three fingers held outstretched — was posted to social media over the weekend. NBC News is not publishing or linking to the video to avoid providing a platform to apparent expressions of hate or white supremacy. The "OK" gesture has been used by people around

Louisiana has declared a state of emergency ahead of Tropical Storm Cristobal. The storm system weakened into a Tropical Depression Thursday, but it is expected to gradually strengthen as it moves toward the United States. Once it makes landfall, it will likely become a Tropical Storm. Cristobal is forecast to approach the Louisiana coast by Sunday evening, with winds up to 60 mph.
It brought heavy rain and flooding to parts of Mexico and Central America, and now, the same is expected to happen in the U.S. Flood watches have been issued for much of Louisiana, including Baton Rouge and

Writing at the Washington Post, author Alyssa Rosenberg has a unique solution for the problems with our policing: Cancel all the cop shows on television. She argues we need to do that because there’s a “reactionary streak” behind the “surface liberalism” in these shows. For a century, Hollywood has been collaborating with police departments, telling stories that whitewash police shootings and valorizing an action-hero style of policing over the harder, less dramatic work of building relationships with the communities cops are meant to serve and protect. There’s a reason for that beyond a reactionary streak hiding below the industry’s surface

Student activists across the country are calling for their schools to cut ties with police departments and remove officers from campuses in response to a national uprising against police brutality. And school leaders in Minneapolis and Portland, Ore., have already taken that step.(Snip) The public school board in Minneapolis voted unanimously to terminate its contract with the city’s police department on Tuesday in response to Floyd’s death. “I firmly believe that it is completely unnatural to have police in schools,” school board member Kimberly Caprini said during the meeting, according to the Minneapolis Star Tribune. On Thursday, the superintendent of
