ALAMEDA (CBS SF) — A video showing Alameda police officers arresting an African American man who had been exercising in the street has gone viral and has prompted a response from city officials.
The video shows four Alameda police officers restraining the unidentified man and wrestling him to the ground on the 2000 block of Central Ave. in Alameda.
On Friday, Alameda Police released several officer body camera videos of the incident along with the audio of the call to police dispatchers reporting an African American man walking and dancing in the street.

Oh Great. Now instead of rioters screaming 'hands up, don't shoot' or 'let me breathe' for the next six months they'll be screaming...'let me dance.'

Why is his dancing so offensive that they call the police?

FIrst you open up the lunatic asylums and let them all go. Then you start disarming the ordinary people. Then you hamstring the police. And now any dingbat expects to be able to just dance in the middle of the street?
How about in your yard? Or on the sidewalk? Or in a park? Or a playground? Not in a street. The street is for cars.

My guess is that he was obstructing traffic. Try this in front of a liberal City Hall and see how long you last. Get belligerent and expect consequences.

My question is why did the police actually arrest this guy? It's like arresting beach goers and church attendees. If the police have the time and inclination to be this silly, then maybe, just maybe Alameda can cut back. Just saying. By the way, when the police follow orders to stand down and let rioters and looters cause all sorts of mayhem, then I have the same question.

11, they detained him,m didn't arrest him - gave him a citation.
This has the smell of a set up to bug the police.
(I have arbitrated cases where the police officers were disciplined for not responding to a call)

The man was told to not reach into his pockets. When the police say "don't reach into your pocket" its because the cop does not know what is in the pocket. Real simple. The street is for cars. Dance on the sidewalk.

You have to know a little bit about Alameda to understand their law enforcement policies.
We lived there for a few years so I can speak to this.
Alameda is a middle class town that sits right next to Oakland. The tough part. Not the hills.
Alamedans understand with great clarity the constant criminal threat that overhangs them day and night. That was the main reason we eventually got our family out of there.
Because of this threat the citizenry demands their LE strictly enforce all laws. Without exception.
E.g., the maximum speed limit is 25. The police will ticket you and send you to traffic school if they clock you going 26. I know this because it happened to me.
I don't know or care what the rules are about dancing in the street.
I just know that, at least when we were there, you damn well better not break the law.
The cops are tough in Alameda.
They have to be.

Newspeak expands each day. A thief wearing work boots and carrying a hammer is "jogger." A gay man cruising for sex in the park is a "bird watcher." Violent rioters are "peaceful protestors." And now a belligerent traffic taunter is a "dancer."

While dancing in the street sounds innocuous, its crazy behavior.
Arguing with the police is crazy.
If you act crazy, you likely ARE crazy.

If I see a white guy, black guy, yellow guy, brown guy, and a STUPID guy dancing in the street, I'll call the police before they get run over by a truck and leave an ugly mess in front of my house.

This is about what the police run into probably a million times a year all over the country when they encounter young Black males who display anti-social behavior, refuse to comply with police requests, or resist arrest. In almost every such encounter the reason the encounter escalates into violence is based upon the conduct that the subject of the encounter exhibits to the police. Remember the police almost never know the identity of the subject when initiating an encounter on the street, or if the subject is armed in some way, or if the subject is under the influence of some illicit drug that alters the attitude of the subject making the subject aggressive or belligerent. So the police must always take steps to protect themselves especially when the subject does not comply with their instructions.
The best thing that community organizations can do for young Black men is to really impress on them that they have nothing to gain by failing to comply with the instructions of the police, or to resist arrest in ways that will require the police to restrain them, possibly putting their lives at risk. So what if the police arrest them, as today chances are very great that when they appear in court that they will be released anyway.

People are permitted to do anything else in the street there, including squatting down and emptying themselves. Why dancing?
