Fifty days of strict lockdowns followed by 30 days where measures are eased could be an effective strategy for reducing Covid-19 deaths while ensuring some level of economic protection, scientists claim. In an EU-backed study published on Wednesday, a cohort of researchers from nine countries simulated how various lockdown strategies would impact the spread of the coronavirus. There have been almost 5 million cases of Covid-19 confirmed globally, with over 300,000 deaths from the virus worldwide, according to data compiled by Johns Hopkins University. Many governments have imposed some form of lockdown to mitigate transmission of the virus. But policymakers

I immediately wanted to find which scientists and where do they get their scientific perspective. As these recommendations are derived from a “EU-backed study,” no thank you. The EU is usually in firm lockstep with all things UN and most especially WHO.
No thank you.

If lockdowns worked any better than just social distancing, this might be a great idea. It doesn't. Denmark, for example, just totally reopened, because they found no difference between hard lockdown and just having people wear masks and not sneeze on each other, essentially.

How about no pay for any government employee for those fifty days. No back pay , sick leave or paid vacations can be used.

They haven't been right about anything else so why should we follow them on this. Further, stop & start sounds totally unpredictable. Just as we get rolling again, which takes a lot of effort, slam on the brakes. This is a solution totally based on hoped for response of the virus but is totally unsuited to running a business.
Never, ever place "researchers" in charge. They have too much time on their hands and computers to play simulation games on, totally unrelated to the real world. When you are killed in a simulation, you just restart. In real life, when your business fails it is devastating.

English pandemic modeling has been so accurate to date s/off. This was an exercise in futility...but it kept the “scientists” busy and out of trouble for a while.

I learned this today. There has never been a vaccine discovered for the Spanish flu from the early 1900's, and yet, the country stayed open, and went on through the 20th century. 100 million deaths caused by leftist ideology, about 70,000 from the Spanish flu. The left don't ever intend for this lockdown to stop. We will have to fight to get our country back.

Bull s**t. Sorry if that offends but we are opening the state of Georgia and to the left’s dismay our cases of the Chinaman’s virus are dropping every day. A another couple of weeks our state will be back to normal. Than God we have a smart, practical governor.

A cohort of scientists all agree? Then it must be settled science! What a bunch of bull. How can we ever trust those who are supposed to be our experts? These are the same tactics that have been used with climate change. This is turning into a fraud.

Some 40 foot trees and 10 foot ropes used on some certain researchers would make the pandemic much less harmful too.

I'm also a 'Scientific Expert'. I once had a Subscription to Scientific American and always read it cover to cover. I'm also an EXPERT. I.E. I'm a 'Has Been Drip Under Pressure'.
Get it? "EX-SPURT". HAHAHA
From my point of view, we could have 100 million infected patients as long as none were Elderly or Comorbid. I.E. Overweight, Diabetic, Cancerous, Cardiotic, ImmuneDificient/etc.
The only ones of my 100 million patients who would die would be because of Medical Malpractice and/or Exceptional Medical Circumstances. Most would simply have Flu Symptoms while some would require Hospital Care.
If the wold's governments had focused on protecting the Elderly and Medically Frail/Vulnerable, CCP-Virus-Deaths would have been NILL, and the World's Economies would only be suffering Moderate Recessions and not heading into Depressions and possibly even Economic Collapses!
Why did President Trump's 'Scientific Experts' not Focus Like Lazar Beams on Protecting the Elderly instead of focusing on Locking Down our Economy and our People?
They Inflicted Maximum Damage to our Economy and Provided Minimum Support for our Elderly and most Vulnerable. Yes, they Talked about the Elderly Death Rate but they did Absolutly Nothing to ProActively Protect the Elderly!
WHY?
If this happens again under President Trump's watch, the 'Experts' will be relegated to the Op-Ed pages of the Washington-Compost/NY-Slimes and not Center-Stage with our POTUS.
There will be a 'Day of Reckoning'. I just hope I'm still alive to witness it.......

Scientists? What scientists? This country hasn't had a real scientist since 2009 when Barry came in and corrupted the whole field. All science job applicants had to do is declare they're rabid supporters of the "I won", promised to corrupt all scientific fields, and they were in like flint.

Oh, but we must follow the science. Always, must listen to scientists. Only should listen to science. Science is only way. Only stupid Trumpsters ignore science. Trump doesn't believe in science and neither do his stupid redneck deplorable followers...They are so dumb because they don't believe in science. Blah, blah, blah science... /s. (ugh...)
Aaaccckkk!! They all act like all scientists are perfect and all-knowing. Scientists never are wrong and never fake their data. They think science is better than the Almighty. They consider anything said by a scientist has to be the best answer, even if science (or the specific scientist(s) involved) has totally different goals than our leaders.
Science does not care nor have any stake in economic issues. Science, in this case, only is looking to limit direct COVID-19 deaths. They have no stake in economic development and how that affects society. And...anything sponsored by the EU is political first anyway. The EU only wants power and eventually to be the one world governance.
No, you can NOT lock up people for 50 days and then expect business to resume for 30 days. Business doesn't work that way. You might as well just shut down the world and watch billions die of starvation, war and pestilence. Don't even bother trying to get the economy going again. All private business will have closed for good, and most people would not have the capital nor resources to start up again. Hmmm...I suppose that would mean all industry would have to be government owned and run. How convenient.
No, there would be terrible shortages, many suicides, horrific crime and many, many problems they wouldn't even think to anticipate. It would make the Great Depression and both World Wars look like a friendly picnic. What kind of stupidity runs the world these days? Are they really THAT dumb?? Or are they really THAT evil?? I believe that over 1 billion people would die if they tried something like this.
