California Gov. Gavin Newsom says first responders will be the “first ones laid” off unless federal bucks arrive in the Golden State in the near future. The Democrat appeared to be playing a political game of chicken with Republicans in Congress over the weekend during a discussion about the coronavirus pandemic with CNN’s Jake Tapper. Mr. Newsom specifically had a message for Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and other Republicans when asked about a $3 trillion relief bill being “dead on arrival.”(Snip) Mr. Newsom insisted that he was not looking for “charity” or “handouts,” but instead wanted funds commensurate for “Depression-era unemployment
That's really mature, really responsible of you, Governor Brylcreem.

You know, in the movies when the bad guy holds a gun to an innocent bystander and demands the hero put down his weapon... It's never a good idea for the hero to give in. The villein just keeps demanding more and shoots the bystander anyway.

How about we lay off Newsom, his administration and the entire state legislature. They are responsible for California's financial mess.
Instead of begging taxpayers of other states to bail you out, cut spending, morons!! California taxpayers cannot afford your policies and American taxpayers can't either!!

This is what we called the "washington monument" strategy when I worked for the government. If you are faced with a budget cut, you identify something that will have the greatest negative impact as the one thing you will cut to meet your newly reduced budget. The worse the impact, the better because it forces those with the money to back off the budget cut. So if you are the park service you threaten to shut down all monuments and parks rather than say you will lay off admin people. It is an immoral but very common, and usually effective, strategy. I am sure Newsome learned it from Aunt Nancy.

Ain't that always the way. If we can't raise your taxes we'll have to lay off all the cops and firemen. The motor vehicle registration department needs new hires though.

So what happened to "we're the 5th largest economy" if we were a separate country bragging?
He's already said he'd suspend the State's payments to their retirement system, and has a host of other items he's looking at too, but those are tough decisions, and they need to protect public service workers BEFORE any other worker, it seems.
Maybe he should be looking for an aggressive retirement program to help reduce the highest paid public service employees with lower-cost employees.
The problem with his demand, and threat? He and 11 other states already said they needed $1 trillion among them, but the $3 trillion Democrat wish list only allocates $1 trillion for all 50 states.
Nancy's $3 trillion proposal looks to be totally created by special interests since it did not go through hearings, committees, etc.. a normal process.

I once sat through a Mayor's budget hearing in a northeastern U.S. medium sized city.
the police chief testified that if the police department budget did not get increased by X per cent, he would have no choice but to furlough all crossing guards.
I was able, through strenuous effort and self control, to avoid laughing out loud.

Not odd at all OP. Democrat governors do this all the time. This is how they punish the residents of their state, by hamstringing the LEO who are supposed to deal with the crime. Former Oregon Governor Kitzhaber cut the budget of the State Crime Lab and the State Police when we refused to let him keep the tax kicker to lavish on his pet projects.

Well now, the Governor of California says that he is going to lay-off “first responders” and at the same time is giving money and benefits to illegal aliens. Only in California could a politician get elected with that sort of platform.

After he announced that he would be giving illegal aliens in Cuba-fornia $500 payments (to make up for them not qualifying for the federal $1,200 payments), he clearly has so much extra money that he doesn't need a cent of federal money.
So, the answer would be "no". Lay off who you want. It's your state, full of idiot voters who put an evil fascist like you in power in the first place, don't tar and feather you and run you out of town on a rail, then your state is lost anywhere.

Odd tactic. Threatening to close playgrounds and public libraries usually forces through tax increases locally, but those outside California probably couldn't care less what Newsom decides to do. They're well within their rights to choose high-speed rail and illegal aliens over sound budgets.
