Congressional Democrats emphasized their demand for more federal funding for state and local governments by tapping U.S. Sen. Robert Menendez to deliver their weekly radio address on Saturday. Menendez, D-N.J., is the lead Democratic sponsor of bipartisan legislation providing $500 billion in federal funding for states to make up for revenue lost when they shut their economies to stop the spread of the coronavrius.(Snip) “This isn’t a blue state or red state issue, this is an American issue," Menendez said in his address. “If we ever want to get back to normal, to see businesses thrive, we need to ensure that our police

First, they know, $500 billion is nowhere near the amount they want, or will solve the issue they are advocating.
Second, notice how they look threaten to cut police, fire and teachers first? Yes, they do this all the time, to once again, scare people into thinking there may not be other options.
What about pushing for retirements, particularly those close enough and who's pension will cover them.
Say, a teacher who's been there 35-40 years, the pension likely covers most of their salary now, and who may not be too excited about returning to the new normal anyhow.
Maybe during this time, have an emergency group of people 55 and over, if they are part of an early retirement program, and they aren't already covered by a State medical plan, to allow those people to be eligible for medicare to help ensure they'll have the medical coverage instead of holding on to a particular job they could retire from otherwise.
How about many of the higher paid executives in government take 10-30 pay cuts like many private company corporate executives are doing?
How about suspending COLA payments for the next two years - doubtful there will be much inflation.
What Democrats are desperately needing to do, is protect their voting block they've lavished salaries and pensions with, and illustrate they have their backs, even if it's not having YOUR back and at YOUR expense.
Recall the Animal Farm quote, some of us are more equal than others?

H.ell no.
The Marxist Communist democrats have been running their blue states into the bankruptcy status forever. Let them live with their criminal empire which is allowed by their illiterate brainwashed Marxist Communist voters. They like it, they can keep it, and support it by themselves.

Why not release the populace to get back to work generating your tax revenues? Or is that concept to capitalistic and simple for you?
How is increasing an economic crisis solving an economic crisis? Adding more massive debt is not a good or acceptable answer.

Let the public sector experience the things the private sector is going through. They're not generating any actual income to the economy, they are receiving private taxpayer tax money as salaries. And with everything shut down by these blue state governors and democrat legislators, why should more money be wasted on them?

Although I live in a blue state (CA), I say no money to states that have sanctuary cities. Federal money should go to states that obey federal laws.

Not sure who I find more reprehensible, Jonathan Salant or Phil Murphy. But are morons and both have insulated themselves from opposing opinions.

States need to respond like private businesses. Cut expenses (aka payroll) during the Stay At Home Order. This should extend to politicians. Then, states can use their own money and tax their own citizens to meet their budget needs. The Federal Govt is $25 trillion in debt. DC is not the answer.

NJ is has been over extended and underfunded for a long time. Murphy chose to shut his state down . He put virus patients in nursing homes. Murphy, deal with a mess of your own making. I live in NJ.

I say the DNC should pony up the money for the blue state bail outs. Their party created the mess! Have all the democrats in the House and Senate chip in the money they were paid while they were not working, and while they were chasing Russia/impeachment. Not to mention the four days per week they don't work anyway!

I know a retired public high school teacher in Illinois who draws a $200,000 annual pension which goes up 3% EACH YEAR. Taxpayers are supposed to pay for Illinois' mistakes? I don't think so

The Democrats want us to bail out the State unions, who are paying their employees to do nothing, and being exhausted from all the hard work, intend to retire with 100% of pay, and full health benefits, at age 50. Thanks for that great offer, but no!

The states actually need permanent "massive layoffs". They should lay off the zillions of overpaid drones and cut the salaries of those that are left by 25%. The laid-off 'workers' can draw unemployment just like the employees in the private sector who lost their jobs. Some government workers are essential but droves of them are not. This could also open some eyes about how bad our governments are overstaffed to begin with.

Hey Menendez they are still collecting property tax, sales tax, income tax, tolls on roads and all the other state and local fees! 14 % of the population is unemployed. Most of those make a lower income and pay little or no tax in NJ. So tell me why you have no money? I know why. You can't keep up with that big fat pension note you have to pay! The only sector that has a pension is the public sector. Private enterprises have long done away with them. They are unsustainable.

Let the states open up with no restrictions, and you will have money again blue states. This all just goes to prove that democrats have no clue where revenue comes from.
