As Florida lifted some of its coronavirus restrictions over the weekend, sunny weather beckoned crowds to gather at newly opened parks and beaches, where public officials approved the springtime outings as long as people wore masks and kept their distance. (Snip) The scofflaws in the southern Florida city are hardly alone. People in many states have resisted guidelines that encourage or require face masks in public spaces to prevent the spread of the novel coronavirus. The masks are hot, uncomfortable and annoying for many. Others consider the mandate to cover their faces a government overreach. Escalating tension over the precaution

Unless the masks are used according to appropriate protocols they are useless and can, indeed, be harmful. 99.99999% of people are not using them correctly.
Therefore they are merely virtue signaling with a bit of tribal identification mixed in for good measure. It has been demonstrated that a large portion of the country is incapable of critical thinking.
Take your mask and shove it!

Good comment, OP, they did say that. Add to that the point that the masks (especially the N-95 ones) lower your oxygen saturation level, suppress your immune system and can't keep out particles as tiny as the usual virus...well makes you think, huh?

Even in the articles that promote wearing a mask there's usually the caveat that people tend to touch the masks too often (adjusting them, taking off and on) and may inadvertently touch their mouth or nose.

It's a visual. Mask = Plague /disease. No mask = No Plague/ disease. I see people on their cars wearing masks. What's up with that? In NJ you have to wear mask to get in to store. Stupid, stupid, stupid.

As a dentist, I am among the minority that does know how to properly wear a mask, but I wholeheartedly agree with #1 that the vast majority do not, and the these overarching "masks for all" mandates are doing little if any good. The other day I drove past a woman wearing her mask across her forehead while smoking a cigarette.

I was an ER and substitute surgery RN for 27 years. Virtually none of the people that I have met are wearing their masks correctly.
Me? I don't wear one. I've got better things to do. I don't go often, and when I do, I avoid the places that are filled with idiots. I do what I need to do and leave.

What are those masks they wore in V for Vendetta? Weren't those a protest against a fascist government, I don't remember. Wear one of those.

This is infection prevention theater just as the TSA is mostly security theater. The masks are ridiculous. If someone feels more comfortable wearing a mask, that's fine they can do it. But wearing masks in parks and on beaches is just insane, there is absolutely no benefit going to be realized in the open air.

Masks as sign of submission -- good point #5.
Many do yearn for the embrace of the State.

The masks aren't for incoming. The masks are there to suppress outgoing droplets carrying the virus, particularly from asymptomatic patients.

I am in the masks, social distancing, and shutting down the economy do nothing to prevent the spread of the virus. Certainly wear them in nursing homes among the sick and in hospitals, etc. Washing your hands and disinfecting commonly used surfaces will do more than all the rest of it, but it is the least desirable to health and businesses---because it is the most boring thing anyone can do. I saw a poor girl outside wiping down shopping carts in 90 degree weather. I don't think she will be back tomorrow.

I am required to wear a mask at work and when I go to the store. I wear it around my neck most of the time at work when I am in my office, pulling it up when someone comes in to talk to me or when I enter common areas where other people are present(most of the time there is no one in the common areas I frequent, so I leave it around my neck). I wear it when I enter a store, because I am requited to do so, but I only pull it up over my face just before entering a take it down as soon as I leave. I hope to indicate by that that I think it is worthless.

I'm asthmatic and I find that I can't breathe clearly through a mask. I was in Costco yesterday and they were handing out masks to everyone who entered the store. I took the mask offered but didn't put it on. I explained why and they were okay with my reasoning. I was the only one who didn't have a mask on in the store.

If this virus is adversely affected by light, heat, and humidity, then Floridians getting out of the house is 10,000x better than wearing a mask. The virus is supposed to linger in closed environments-like any room in your house. Forget the masks, go to the beach, enjoy the saltwater. It's better for you than listening to "experts" whose true allegiance isn't to your health.

After seeing masked, gloved grocery store employees pulling their masks down to smoke outside or eat popcorn off their register counter (yes, with nasty old gloves on! blech!!) I just threw up my hands and silently screamed in total frustration. Masks and gloves are going to do more harm than good as they give a false sense of security to the willfully stupid and unteachable among us.
I am not sick. I am not wearing a mask unless I am sick. It makes sense if I am coughing or sneezing. Otherwise, washing my hands religiously and intentionally not touching my face are the best bets.

What OP said. MDs told us that masks were a waste of time and did more harm than good. Now everyone is on the mask bandwagon. Saw a guy all by himself the other day on the beach wearing a mask when no one was within 100 yards of him! Good grief. I refuse to wear a mask unless absolutely necessary to go into the grocery store. We are rapidly becoming a nation of sheep!

I live in Florida. I don't remember any rule we have to wear a mask outside. It's laughable that people should wear one while at the Beach! I don't wear one anywhere but at the Grocery store. I might take one with me if it's required to enter a restaurant or shop, but I'm certainly not going to wear it otherwise. Also, I'm hearing rumblings that the Democrats want to keep people over 65 in their houses. Puleeeze. I will tell them what I've told my children. I'm will be 79 in a few weeks. I've lived a good life. I certainly don't plan on locking myself up in my house during the time I have left! I'm going to shop, eat out and have fun. I already have a cruise booked for February and I will go unless the Cruise Line cancels it! Good grief! Don't try to lock up us Seniors. If you do you will see what a real Revolution looks like!!

I wear a mask while mowing, and while sanding.
Otherwise, NOT. Drop dead if you think you can force me. I wore one in the office for an eye appointment, and I realize that the docs may need to do this, because we are going to be very close as she checks my eyes, and she has a immune compromised daughter at home. I made an exception there.
Otherwise, no mask for me. Just not doing it.

I loved a recent meme, of a man in a Lone Ranger mask. The clerk asked him why he was wearing it and he answered that the CDC said he needed to wear one and she stated that wasn't a mask he was wearing. He asked her what the Lone Ranger wore. Answer. :A mask!" His retort, "Hi yo Silver, away!" That sums up my feelings about masks. I'm 77, I survived SE Asia and 33 years in the oil patch, and the only way I'll wear one is if I'm forbidden entry to a place I have to be (not want to be). I can't think of a place where I want to be so bad that'd I'd wear one.

I've been using the same disposable mask for several weeks, and can't find any replacements. The N95 masks without the breathing valve are almost impossible to wear - too tight, can't breathe, and unbelievably hot. I went to the store two days ago, and lots of people weren't wearing masks.

It's all part of the plan. Amen to posters who see it for the farce it is. I am accumulating them in my car, since they give us one every day at work. When the TP runs out, I'm ready.

I live in Florida also, and nowhere have I seen any requirement to wear a mask outside. Inside would be up to whoever decides you need to wear one at their home or place of business, but not outside. Our governor is opening up the state, unlike many of those dem run places, and he is not trying to be a dictator. Just a safe and sane attitude. I haven't worn a mask since this whole farce started, and don't intend to.

According to the mask wearers' logic, if they have a mask on, they're safe and so am I, even if I don't have one on. Why be afraid, unless you don't really believe your funky little mask doesn't work?

Mayor Duffus in FL said everybody has to wear a mask now. As far as lifting restrictions, the crazies were out today and back to their rude selves. It was much nicer leaving home before. Who knew restaurants were the cause?
