People with low levels of vitamin D may be more likely to die from the coronavirus, according to a preliminary study. Researchers at Queen Elizabeth Hospital Foundation Trust and the University of East Anglia in England compared the average vitamin D levels of 20 European countries with COVID-19 mortality rates — and found “significant relationships” between vitamin D levels and the number of deaths caused by this infection. The study, which has not been peer-reviewed, notes sun-starved “Nordic” countries are among the most at risk. “We believe that we can advise vitamin D supplementation to protect against SARS-CoV2 infection,” the

People who are frail and elderly tend to have lowish vitamin D levels, and are more likely to die of coronavirus. That does not prove that low vitamin D contributes to causes of death. Dozens of clinical trails have failed to prove that vitamin D replacement for lowish values has any health benefits.

I was wondering about the high death rates in sunny Italy, Spain and Greece, so I researched and found this study
https://www.news-medical.net/news/20200429/Low-levels-of-vitamin-D-may-be-linked-to-severe-COVID-19.asp
which says Vitamin D deficiency is worse in the sunny countries and better in Scandinavia.
Bad science by someone. We don’t know who to believe (trust) anymore.

To the contrary number 1. There is evidence.
Evidence that Vitamin D Supplementation Could Reduce Risk of Influenza and COVID-19 Infections and Deaths.

People with darker skin do not make as much Vit D in their skin from sun exposure as do people with lighter skin.

Just returned from a garden center. About 50 people standing in line outside in the sun dutifully standing on the x's six feet apart all with masks on. While I will wear my mask inside a store, I find it ridiculous to wear a mask while outside. I'll keep my virus distance, but I refuse to wear a mask while outside. The same while driving my car.

This study just out from the Vitamin D Manufacturer’s Association.
This just in: experts agree that you are 10 times more likely to die from the corona virus if your air conditioning vents aren’t cleaned of the virus.
And now this: *****
I’m getting sick of it.
Experts agree that people who are sick of studies are less likely to read studies that “could” save their lives and “might” result in more serious side effects than “might” otherwise have been experienced.

So sunlight on the skin is one of the best ways to boost vitamin D. All those people NOT going to the beach this weekend in California are not getting this benefit, making them more susceptible to CV. So Governor Gruesome Newsom is putting Californians at increased risk of death.

The beneficial effects of fresh air and sunlight in relation to improving condition of flu patients have been studied for at least the last 100 years. Apparently it's the sunlight which is synthesized by the skin producing the form of vitamin D which the body can best utilize. During the Spanish flu, Boston doctors observed improvement in patients who were in "outdoor" hospitals and direct sunlight (NCBI). So sun through a windowpane doesn't suffice. Taking vitamin D supplements is also not as efficacious.
Lighter skinned people absorb more vitamin D from the sun in shorter time than darker skinned people. So, #2, perhaps the high death-rate Mediterranean countries is due more to the darker "olive" complexions of the people who are less able to metabolize the vitamin? In Scandinavia, the people are fair-skinned, but the days are short. I don't know, just ruminating.
Nevertheless, apparently, the history of epidemics demonstrates that fresh air and sunlight do appear to have salubrious effects on many, many patients. People also feel better emotionally when out in the fresh air and sun. Maybe there's a mind-body thing going on, too. Feeling negative, pessimistic, hopeless seems to slow down healing. Good, hearty laughter, on the other hand, seems to help, getting those endorphins surging!
What the studies published in the NCBI articles (2008 and 2009) about covid epidemics is virtually the same as what Brix & Fauci are saying today, as to how to deal with the spread of this novel virus (isolation, hygiene, covering the face, etc), EXCEPTING what's believed to be the benefits of fresh air and sun. Why are they not telling people to get outside into the fresh air and sun!
Nowadays, after surgery, those hard-driving nurses get you up and walking around; it gets your blood circulating, through the heart and lungs and around and in all the organs. Doctors found that patients recovered much faster when they're up and moving around as soon as possible after surgery. They should include a stroll in the sun and fresh air.

Maybe this is why flu season ends when we start getting more sunshine. Spend even half an hour in full sun, in a bathing suit and your body can make 10,000 to 25,000 units of Vitamin D.
I normally take 3,000 units in the winter per day, and upped it to 4,000 units per day for this Wuhan flu mess.

I'm thinking there's a vitamin D conspiracy. It seems that most people test low these days. Doctors prescribe astronomical amounts of unnatural supplements. What's the possible danger in that?

EVMS (Eastern Virginia Medical School) has posted a COVID-19 Management Protocol. The prophylaxis recommends Vitamins C and D, Zinc, Melatonin, and Quercetin. It says "while there is no high level evidence that this cocktail is effective, it is cheap, safe and widely available."
My take on this, it can't hurt, might help.

So the Bakersfield doctors were correct - go out and get some sun! It’s 80 degrees and not a cloud in the sky in Charleston, SC today. Hubby and I just went for a long walk in the sun.

Everyone in the USA is deficient in Vitamin D, according to my Neurologist/Med School Prof. He has me taking 50,000 IU's of D3, and it must be D3, no other type.

#25 After a serious, life threatening illness that resulted in heart and renal failure I assumed I was deficient in Vit D. My former GP had put me on 50K units twice a week. I was hit and miss about taking it. The nephrologist ordered a Vit D panel of D2 and D3 and, I think, a combo level. I was certain it would be low as when I'd had it run years earlier it was low. To boot, I had it run early spring. Typically that is when your levels are the lowest after the winter. I was wrong. I was a normal as normal can be. He wants me on no more supplementation than what I get in a multivitamin. I get it checked every 3-4 months related to my kidney failure.

I've been taking 3,000 units of Vitamin D every morning for about 30 years, and never had the flu in my life. Before moving to KS, I lived in Fla was in the sun a lot pretty much year round there.
Maybe just lucky, but never had the flu. I do take the vaccinations, too.

Before everybody jumps onboard, Vit D3 is an estrogen. When I started taking it, my tumor markers went way up. Still don't understand why people living in states like FL and CA are deficient.
