New York refused to send nursing home’s COVID-19

New York health officials were warned in writing that a Brooklyn nursing home where 55 patients have died of coronavirus was overwhelmed — weeks before it began topping the state’s official list of resident COVID-19 deaths, damning emails show. Cobble Hill Health Center CEO Donny Tuchman sent a desperate email to state Health Department officials on April 9, asking if there was “a way for us to send our suspected covid patients” to the hospital built inside the Javits Convention Center or the US Naval hospital ship Comfort — the under-utilized federal medical facilities on Manhattan’s West Side.

Under-utilzed is an understatement. But hey they have all those awesome pictures of the ship going up the river. \s

Jamming them into already crowded nursing homes when there are two huge facilities standing by specifically created or moved (USNS Comfort) to take excess patients to relieve overcrowding. Cuomo and his crew are guilty of killing a lot of people via incompetence. Were they avoiding these federally supplied facilities because to use them would somehow make Trump look good? Damned political haters.

Cuomo and DeBlasio need to pay a heavy political and legal price for this level of willful incompetence. Actually this goes beyond just incompetence, this is TDS run amok. Would love to see lawsuits from some of the relatives of the elderly victims who didn't have to die, but did. All thanks to a governor who is beyond incompetent.

Possible reasons: 1) Doesn't align with official Cuomo policy of "Let the old Trump voters die." 2) Would look bad if they moved every single nursing home Covid patient there and they STILL didn't fill up that ship. 3) Hey, we get $13,000 per Covid death, you idiot! 4) All the above.

As the saying goes “Follow the money” what’s a few lives when they can make more money sending patients to their deaths in nursing homes already overburdened.

IIRC, the Comfort and Javits Center were not to take COVID patients, but to take non-COVID patients to open beds in area hospitals for the highly anticipated onslaught. This story is exactly why 1) Government is untrustworthy in a crisis. Bureaucrats and "experts" game the system to their ends: i.e. Supplemented budgets, fame and prestige. 2) Politicians are the worst "leaders" possible. Unless their interests and yours intersect, you're the loser. 3) The public must stop its mindless and gutless followership while sacrificing its civic rights if it is to remain free. For all the high-minded talk of life being so precious...those nursing homes became COVID concentration camp barracks. The good news: They added to the death toll!

This seems reminiscent of the militant Islamists in Aceh province rejecting the offer of fresh water and medical assistance from the U.S. Navy in the wake of 2004's terrible tsunami. The personal and political rivalry between Cuomo and Trump drove the former to let citizens of his state die rather than receive care that might benefit the public image of the latter. Is this part of Mario's rearing? We heard yesterday how Andrew's brother, Chris, violated self-quarantine and endangered his own son in pursuit of political points against Trump.

Did Cuomo/democrats refuse to send these patients to the USNS Comfort because it might make Trump look good? This is your modern day democrat, party over country and willing to accept a body count if it means making your political opponent look bad.

One can think of Cuomo as a deviant, but perhaps he is just totally incompetent; The State was not prepared for an epidemic because he blew the money on Leftist projects that failed & the State is broke for the same reason. Cuomo is on Tv daily talking to viewers as if we are cretins and basking in his celebrity status. Maybe he is just 'twisted' / his tv host brother definitely is. They see themselves as elite and above the rest of the citizens and they know what is best for us- HARDLY ! The State with the highest taxes in the Nation is broke- THAT is incompetence to the max.

The Comfort was sent to New York when it was feared that their hospitals were being, and would continue to be, overrun with COVID-19 patients. Apparently that did not work out as forecast (by Cuomo and others). The Comfort was never intended to be for any but the patients requiring non-COVID-related hospitalization.

April 7, 2020: President Donald Trump on Monday approved New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo's request to use the USNS Comfort for COVID-19 patients — but hours later the U.S. Navy announced one of the ship's crew members tested positive for the coronavirus. Cuomo said he called the president early Monday and asked to change plans for the 1,000-bed hospital ship, which docked in New York City's Pier 90 last week to relieve hospitals of non-coronavirus patients. The president agreed. Late Monday, a spokesperson for the Navy confirmed to NBC News that a worker on board the ship was in isolation after being diagnosed with the coronavirus. The spokesperson said the diagnosis will not change the ship's new plan. ????

Reading this, it seems Tuchman dd an end run around the New York area hospitals who were to use Javits and the Comfort for their overlow - originally non-COVID cases, then on April 7 a switch on the Comfort to acceptance of COVID cases. From New York hospitsls. His patients were in his nursing home.

So this sounds like Tuchman wanted to get the patients out of his place to keep them safe. This is especially troubling: the Health Department barred nursing homes from refusing admission to “medically stable” coronavirus patients. So they added more infected patients in to a nursing home that was full of obviously at risk not-yet infected patients rather than putting them in the massively underutilized "Trump hospitals" and "Trump ship". It looks like either incompetence (something that most political hacks have as their specialty) combined with a desire to avoid making Trump look good by actually using the hospital resources that he was able to organize and get to NYC. Cuomo's Fools should be the name of this crew.

I believe that our Navy could really use their two modern hospital ships to treat their own sailors and aviators. Such capability should not be wasted on political theater.

The letter was heartbreaking as it recounted the death of an 88-year-old woman in a New York nursing home. But it was also angry and accurate about a strange New York policy that is fatally wrongheaded. “I am wondering who will hold Gov. Cuomo accountable for the deaths of so many older people due to his reckless decision to place covid19 patients in nursing and rehabilitation homes,” the letter began. “I am writing as a daughter who lost her beautiful 88 year old mother who was receiving physical therapy at one such facility.”

We all deserve protection from the coronavirus, which is now our nation’s second-leading cause of death. To get it, we must cooperate and make sacrifices. Our culture has a wonderful way of taking controversial or partisan figures and weaving them into the broader story of America. When Abraham Lincoln was assassinated, for example, his secretary of war, Edwin Stanton, purportedly said, “Now he belongs to the ages,” which was a way of saying that the battles Lincoln fought and the leadership he provided would stay with us and shape the nation going forward.

President Trump seems increasingly ambivalent about the utility of the daily and sometime marathon press conferences. He should be — and for reasons besides just their length and frequency. First, Trump gets bogged down into long, back-and-forth jousts with the touché Washington press corps. His impromptu skills, honed both as president and in his years on television, usually ensure him tactical victories. He is not peremptory but retaliatory in his put-downs. Fine. Most Americans don’t especially like the Washington press corps. So they don’t mind them earning the repartee that their rude provocation deserves. But Trump’s victories are becoming Pyrrhic.

I have watched nearly every Corona Task Force presser. I took a day off after the Lysol ridiculousness to lower my blood pressure. However, I find the briefings to be very informative. The president gives an overview and then introduces members of the Task Force to update on specific items. The media hates these forums, because they can’t control the information that is available to the public. This is a great reason to keep airing them. The most tedious portion of the pressers are the questions from the members of the White House Press Corps. They are political reporters trying to ingest health, science and business information.

When you think of it, it's nothing short of incredible that Joe Biden is the presumptive nominee for the Democratic Party. One might have thought 2016 would have been Biden's year (if he was ever going to have a time at bat), since Barack Obama's two-term presidency had just ended, and most vice presidents who try for the top spot do so immediately following their bosses' departures. But, as is often the case in politics these days, party nominees can result from when the party decides it's someone's "turn." That was the case the last go-around: the Democrats decided that it was Hillary's turn,
