“If I get corona, I get corona.”
The news clip of the young man on a beach during spring break who refused to stop partying during the COVID-19 outbreak was jaw-dropping for many people — at least until the more horrifying images of overwhelmed emergency rooms, empty streets, shuttered stores and refrigerated trucks serving as hospital morgues overwhelmed our daily news feeds. One didn’t necessarily cause the other, but it sure made us wonder: Were we so self-centered, cynical or ignorant that we couldn’t take seriously the growing calls for social distancing?

Mandatory. I'm about done with mandatory. Too many people out there feel qualified and compelled to tell other people what to do.
As to the kid on the beach, maybe he didnt believe the government. After all, its not like they don't exaggerate or flat out lie at every opportunity. Why would this be any different. Lets see...booze and bikinis or house arrest and face masks. Tough choice.

"We", "We", "We".
The writer uses "We" WAAAY too much.
The writer apparently believes that everyone 'thinks', believes, and acts just the same as the writer does.
The media shows us what they want to show us, to 1) increase ratings, and 2) grind their political axe.
As for me, I govern my own behavior based on the information available...... How many cases, how close, what treatments are available, what are the supplies of various items.
We have a lot of smart people in this country.
We also have a lot of fools.
We have a lot of people doing their best to get through this as best they can,
We have some leaders who are doing the best they can to guide the Nation, and guide the various States, as best they can.
Unfortunately, we also have those who turn everything into a political fight, who try to constantly smear people who are doing the best they can, to try to gain some political advantage.
We know who they are.
November..... and Election Day.... is coming.

The calls for “national service” always seem to come from those in no danger of serving.

Aging politicians and panic stricken retirees are suffocating the American dream before the eyes of young Americans as we speak. And he has the gall to call the young selfish? I’m not exactly in the mood to be preached at by some out of touch New Yorker, veteran or not, about sacrificing my children for nation I know longer recognize.
I watched a terrorist attack from a school desk and my classmates got their limbs blown off in Iraq. I am now helpless trapped at home with my young children watching the country commit murder suicide while my friends all lose their jobs. I don’t need a lesson in what it means to love America from anyone.
Military service is being bastardized through the comparisons of empty hospitals to the trenches of France and the caves of Afghanistan. Perhaps the author should consider addressing that before calling for a draft.

Heat, sun and humidity kill this virus. It is insane to force everyone to stay indoors.
Regarding social distancing, why hasn't any reporter asked the two "medical experts" why they sit side by side in the press conference, while reporters are spread out with multiple seats in between them? Could it be that they have tested positive for the antibodies? Could it be that they are on hydroxychloroquine as a preventative?

Our country is founded on individualism, not the collective "we", or mandatory. The founders knew the collectivists well, and wrote a constitution, leaving the collectivists out of it.

Mandatory service is not necessary, but Improvements In parenting, school curriculum, work ethics, journalistic and political opinions, and bringing businesses back to America is a start, but not end to all.

Success, as always, depends upon who is in charge. Remember, it is said that whomever counts the votes is the decisive factor in who wins. The point is, America need to elect ethical candidates, faithful to their oaths of office. Right now, voters must discern those most merited to lead in these critical areas of our Government, including of course any draft of America's youths. This is so important, especially now that the universities seem to have betrayed their former trust and even the public school system is questionable.

Most young people would benefit greatly from 4 months at a boot camp run by USMC drill instructors.
