America’s taxpayers funded the purchase of cats from Chinese “wet markets” for medical research over the past 15 years, sustaining the very institutions that are now blamed for spreading the coronavirus in Wuhan.
Researchers at the U.S. Agriculture Department paid for dozens of animals, then had them killed and fed their tongues, brains and other parts to other cats as part of medical studies, according to the White Coat Waste Project, which exposed the controversial work in a report last year. The Trump administration ended the cat projects in the wake of the report, and the 14 surviving kittens were adopted out.

This is beyond disgusting. What a job to be a cat butcher at the Dept of Agriculture.

And I'm sure this is but an iceberg tippy-top of where our misspent tax fortunes go. As a taxpayer - I get absolutely NO SAY in how my tax dollars are given away for one folly after the next. That's why we are kept ignorant of this kind of information until the excrement hits the fan. Who allowed this in the first place? And what about ALL THE REST of ill-thought out 'good ideas' we are funding? When do American workers get an accounting BEFORE the next disaster we've paid for comes to light?

There's billions of money in "medical research." The animals, the researchers, grants, etc. To the Drs. Fauici and Birx of the world, there can never too much "research" aka waste of tax dollars, animal lives, etc to continue their "research."

Paywall for me. Oh well.
Revolting. Thus once again proving our government bureaucracies and globalist businesses use China to do things we the people won't let them do here, to animals, to unborn babies, to women, to prisoners, to working people.
Gotta wonder about folks who enjoy the idea of torturing any animal.

This is fine when Planned Parenthood does it but sickening when cats are involved.
Can anyone in the CDC or NIH explained what we learned from this 15 year experiment?

I hate to admit it but every now and then mine tick me off enough that I open the recipe book. Cat food takes on a whole different paradigm.

That was another “Deep State” bureaucratic foul initiative that has been facilitated by out of control globalization. It is good that the Trump Administration stopped it.

The "wet markets" are not to blame. The Wuhan virus escaped from the Level 4 Biohazard Lab (only one in China) near the markets. The virus lived in horseshoe bats kept at the lab. They were not sold at the market. The nearest horseshoe bat nesting area is 800 miles from Wuhan.

another prime example of why the fed should be limited to the specific enumerated powers listed in the constitution. very few things the fed can do effectively and cost effective.
from the article i noticed the following oxymoron
slaughters were done humanely according to Chinese law

I'm done pretending to be objective careful and professional bending over backwards to avoid discrediting myself and all non-leftists.
They did this, our own deep state did this as the last ditch effort to stop Trump. There I said it. Harvesting the NSA database failed. Lying to the FISA court failed. Wiretapping failed, Ukraine failed. They did this, they killed us to win.

If you are unaware of the techniques used in the attempt to monitor emerging diseases or unwilling to learn, don't be so quick to condemn the process. Of course if your sense of values place the lives of feral animals above those of humans then by all means criticize to your hearts content. You certainly are entitled to your own opinion; to bad it is an uninformed one. I suspect the writer is a "cat" person. No need to be objective when feelings are hurt.

#17 so you advocate this kind of research funded by US tax dollars? To what purpose? Let's just get it out there, nice and clear. More than a few of us have STEM backgrounds here. We are not back country rubes as you might suppose. And we still find the Chinese way of doing "science" repugnant and dangerous. Their methods on unborn children, captives of war, and prisoners have been documented as akin to the Nazis. What they do to animals is just the stuff that makes headlines because it is actually believed by our China loving media. "Science!" and it's zealots should tread softly. A religion it is to some but most of us are smart enough to realize there is a God we all must answer to in the end.

Just some background on this particular bit of outrageous government waste and unnecessary animal cruelty whitewashed as "science", here is the article with the rather grizzly details by Time, and not necessarily written by a cat lover.

fthata:The program has cost $22.5 million and killed more than 3,000 cats since 1982, according to the report.
“USDA kitten toxoplasmosis experimentation causes unnecessary animal pain and suffering, little or no scientific benefit, and wastes millions of taxpayer dollars as a consequence of non-competitive perpetual intramural federal funding,” the report says.
The White Coat Waste Project first flagged the USDA’s toxoplasmosis research in an investigation last year, the new report says. Lawmakers last year introduced the Kittens in Traumatic Testing Ends Now (KITTEN) Act, which calls for an end to this type of cat research. It was reintroduced to Congress this month, NBC News reports.
“The fact that the USDA has been rounding up pets and other innocent dogs and cats in foreign countries —including at Chinese meat markets condemned by Congress — killing them and feeding them to lab cats back here in the States is simply disgusting and unjustifiable,” Florida Rep. Brian Mast, who is co-sponsoring the legislation, told NBC.

If you wonder who the soulless killers will be for the Deep State when it all falls apart, find the list of people who did this and a lot worse, without batting an eye. When you have a conscience and listen to it, you wonder how some things can happen. This is how they happen.
Maybe the Deep State puppets in the House can drum up a committee to find the individuals who struck the deal with China. Let's find out why and who made a buck or two. Millions of Americans would love to know how this works and who profits from it. If it is a bipartisan corruption, great. Clean up a bit of the swamp.

People have no idea of the money shipped out of this country nor why. I still want to know why this country gives China foreign aid.
If we are going to talk about China, every politician with a financial interest in China should be named.

It's only taxpayer money, and with nothing useful to do, this is how these government employees spend their time. Meanwhile, feral cats roam the USA freely as pests, available at no cost, although cats do not fit my culturally biased definition of agriculture.
