Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf said Thursday she will temporarily banish cars from residential streets throughout the city, opening more space for pedestrians and bicyclists to use the roadways for exercise during the coronavirus stay-home order.
“Because of the reduction in car traffic we will be closing off a number of streets, so that bicyclists and pedestrians can spread out and exercise and take in fresh air safely,” Schaaf said during a virtual town hall Thursday evening.
The emergency measure, called “Oakland Slow Streets,” will shut out automobiles from 74 miles of streets — 10% of the roadway space in Oakland.

Barney Fife will be out writing tickets for people trying to get to their homes...but I think Mayor Libby should give him more than one bullet.

So how do I get home, how do I go to the doctors or another opened business (groceries), how do packages get delivered, how do meals get delivered, visit a family member who needs help, what if I need to go to a drugstore, etc. etc. The list is endless. Please stop trying to regulate and control everything.

Who believes any of those streets will ever re-open for vehicles again?

This is how it starts. Let these people loose and it will be state wide street closure.

Can you believe the way people are treated like babies? Everyone can get out in their yard, deck, or whatever NOW and exercise. I think this is getting truly bizarre. If this is okay, then get people back to work. If Home Depot is open, let other stores open!

I will be surprised if all of these revert to ordinary car-centric status after the lockdown ends.
Assuming the lockdown ends, that is. Many have observed that freedoms conceded during times of distress are never voluntarily returned, and I suspect we'll see a LOT of that this time. The Left are exploiting this crisis to decree what they have been unable to achieve legislatively, effectively imposing their vision of an authoritarian socialist nation over our constitutional republic. And they're not bloody likely to give that up without a fight.

Speaking of ''at gun point,'' that is the only way I would EVER go to Oakland. If I accidentally went there it would be to escape Scat Francisco.

I might be reading this wrong, but it looks like the mayor may have actually had a great idea for a change. People are not going to stay indoors during great weather, and besides, sunshine is vitamin D right from the source. I cannot believe all the naysayers today. Lots of people do not have yards by the way.

Then how are people going to get to pharmacies to get their meds or to the grocery store, much less haul the bags home? Walk 10 miles? Does this mayor have a single functioning brain cell? We need more dumb women in politics? Yeah, right. How many Hank Johnson's is enough?

I only saw Oakland from a BART train that passed that city. You'll never catch me any where near that town.
