Americans across the country have decided to wear gloves when grocery shopping or getting other essential goods to prevent catching the Wuhan coronavirus. But Molly Lixey, a Registered Nurse in Michigan, was frustrated by the number of people who are wearing gloves but aren't thinking about cross-contamination factors.
"If you want to wear gloves that's all fine and well, you absolutely can, but I wanted to remind you of a little thing called cross-contamination," she said in a video posted on Facebook.
Lixey put on gloves and used paint to show how germs spread, even with gloves on.
She pretended to be at the grocery store,

Am I ever sick of the lazy slugs who then discard their gloves in the parking lot.

Quite aside from the current Corona virus concerns, this issue of cross contamination is very real.
It drives me nuts to see people wash their hands in a public washroom, then turn off the faucet, with their "clean" hand, touching the faucet knob they had just touched with their dirty hand when they turned it on.

It's easy to wash the germs off of your hands. Not so, the gloves.

3 weeks ago I watched a mother with her toddler. The kid had gloves on. The gloved hands were in her mouth.
The chucking of gloves and masks on the streets/parking lots seems to be nation wide. What kind of idiot does that?

Science AND common sense!
At the grocery store, I was taking a few wipes with which to open refrigerator doors, and pick up things to put in my cart, and the like. Then at check out, all my items are handled by the clerk and the person bagging. I use my hand sanitizer when I get into the car, before I touch the steering wheel. I always wash my hands when i get home. After taking groceries of the bags, I wipe them down. Then I wash my hands again. I wipe down all the surfaces, light switches, doorknobs. Then, wash hands again.
Then I hug and kiss my ancient German Shepherd on the top of her soft, furry head ;-(
Do the best we can. Pray.

No matter what we do, some scold pops up to tell us we're doing it wrong.

The virus CANNOT go through skin. No reason to wear gloves. I spray my hands with alcohol before I touch my car after going out, and wash my hands when I get home. Gloves offer a false sense of security.

I wear gloves to pump gas, but immediately peel them off (cuff first) and drop them in the trash can at the station.

She forgot to show how taking off the first glove can result in contaminating that hand when touching the last gloved hand, which is why nurses always glove the surgeon before an operation. Putting on and taking off bio-contamination protection must follow a strict routine, including decontamination of the clothing. Usually a good idea to pick up strong sanitizer using a paper towel in hand, so as to not contaminate the bottle, then rub the gloved hands down prior to removing the gloves.

I’m 62 yrs old. Sometimes I remember going grocery shopping with my mom. First thing we did when we got home was wash our hands. Her reason was money. Back then you paid in cash. There was such a thing as dirty money. However, to this day I still wash my hands first thing after coming home from the grocery store. Is it perfect, couldn’t hurt.

Just assume everything is infected and plan accordingly. Good luck with that.

Lord, have mercy. The hysteria got out of hand a week ago, and it's even worse now.

I'm RN - I'm trying so hard to keep quiet about what I see outside work - people doing this very thing every day, wearing N95s w beards - NO!!!! There's no training stupid. Cross contamination - it's too hard for some to understand. I watched a woman wearing her homemade holey mask w a coffee filter and plastic gloves ..... and cigarette lit. Her ashes fell on her plastic glove, set it on fire, as she tilted the "mask" to take her drag. I just shook my head. Not going to help that.
I've been carrying 91% alcohol in spray bottles in pocket for years. I have SaniWipes at home. What we use at work. Keep toothbrushes covered in bathrooms, please. Flushing aerosolizes fecal flushes. NEVER use cold water wash on anything but delicates. Never on anything else. Hot dryer. Bleach all you can - sheets, towels, underclothes esp.
Maybe we will someday get rid of C Auris. That is a stubborn one as well.

Don’t touch your face until you wash your hand
Wash them often
Wash them a lot
Wash wash wash
The germs usually get touched
Or sometimes airborne
But mostly touched
Wash wash wash!
Thank you

This was the ONLY helpful article I have read during this entire miserable Chi-Com virus episode. All thanks to Nurse Lixey. And also Beth Baumann. People who wear the same mask and the same gloves day after day are deluded.

When I leave home I take several pairs of gloves. Here, you can't find masks, alcohol, Clorox/Lysol wipes or toilet tissue. When I get home, I wipe down the car including the door handles.
When I see gloves all over the parking lot, I figure they do the same with condoms. Nasty looking.

OP, etal- Respectfully, although wearing gloves and using wipes for merchandise being selected during grocery shopping may seem worth doing, the reality is that when the items are put on the conveyor belt for the cashier to ring out, the merchandise not wiped by previous buyers has contaminated the conveyor belt. Further, the cashier is handling those items and bagging them whether wearing gloves or not—and handing cash, bills and coins. Suggest that before leaving home, “divide” the kitchen table or island into a “contaminated” side and a “sanitized” side. Upon returning home, place the “contaminated” items on that designated side and after “sanitizing” them, put them on the other side. The table will need to be sanitized unless using wax paper or newspaper as a base for the grocery items which can be disposed of as trash.

The things you overlook!! I wore gloves to the store yesterday. I'm going to be keeping Clorox wipes with me from now on to disinfect EVERYTHING I touch before it hits my cart!
