The COVID-19 pandemic has reportedly infected fewer than a dozen men among California’s 122,000 state prison inmates. These cases, all in Southern California, represent a remarkably low number, which is bound to grow dramatically very soon, when the prison system begins to do more testing. he former director of the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, Scott Kernan, has called state prison a “tinderbox of potential infection.” California is not alone. The United States is suffering a hangover from the mass incarceration boom of the past 30 years. Along with Texas, California leads the nation in the number of persons

What does Newsom expect to gain from this?
I suspect this will come back to bite him. I sure hope that it does.

mass incarceration? No! Mass criminal activity! I am crankier than usual today. I am unable to tolerate such nonsense.

NONE were "needed". Lock them in their cells, if they don't interact, the disease will not spread. And if they spend a month in their cells....SO WHAT. They are prisoners. It would be a bit more work to deliver their food and water to the cells, but OK, just work it out.
Don't risk people's lives for prisoners. They are criminals and deserve to be there.

Well, duh. They need to empty the prisons of convicted felons to make room for all those being arrested for violating the stay in place edicts.

That's fine but the prisoners need to sign an Oath & Pledge that they will not commit any crimes, abstain from drug and alcohol use and abuse, attend church every Sunday, not possess a firearm, and volunteer at an elderly hospice facility for three days a week. Should be good to go.

Let's see. A 97% survival rate. Young and healthy, test positive and get out of jail free. Hmm.

Isn’t being in the slammer the ultimate in social distancing?

Our brand new governor, Baby Bashear, ordered a prisoner release. One of them wandered into our condominium community; somehow got into one of our buildings and murdered a resident. I will never forgive that idiot governor. This was a totally senseless death.

I am staying in my house, and I did not break any laws. They can stay in their cells. social distancing will work for them just as it is working for everyone else. I certainly would not vote for this guy to be the local dog warden. He's bonkers And these prisoners would get better medical care in jail.

Get over yourselves Liberals. 12 out of a population of 110,000 is insignificant, especially when it's treatable. They're just chomping at the bit to release chaos onto the populace to further their goal of revolution.

I think all released prisoners should be delivered to the governor's mansion for quarantine until this is over. I'm sure he has enough space. Marxism should begin at home, governor.

It just seems to me that prison is kind of the ideal quarantine environment. Except maybe the showers.

The left has put us in prison and let the criminals out of prison. This shutdown should never have happened. It won't be forgotten. Names are being remembered.

Prisoner releases will not hasten the destruction of the Coronavirus. Everyone knows this except for the anti-Law-and-Order Democrats.

If they didn't protect all the illegals and instead shipped them back across the border, their prison population wouldn't be so high...just saying...

Total morons. They did this in NYC and crime is up 75%. Think about it, does a democrat ever think about the hard working citizens of our country. NO. All they think about are criminals, illegal aliens, the homeless and sanctuary cities. And we're the suckers who pay for these low lives. When are people in this country going to wake up. Get it yet..

After all, we have a general election and the 2020 Census coming up. More respondents to the Census adds much needed House Seats, and then there will be more Dim voters in the 2020 general election.

Liberals are itching to let prisoners run free. Sounds like we would all be safer if they remain locked up.
