The governor of Louisiana said Sunday that he wasn't told to cancel the massive Mardi Gras celebrations at the end of February, even though governors were briefed on the coronavirus threat weeks earlier. 'There was not a single suggestion by anyone–a doctor, a scientist, a political figure–that we needed to cancel Mardi Gras,' John Bel Edwards told CNN's State of the Union Sunday morning.(Snip) Although concerns over coronavirus and its ramifications didn't manifest until March in the U.S., U.S. governors were briefed February 9 at the National Governors Association Winter Meeting by members of Donald Trump's coronavirus task force on the growing threat

Easy to believe. It required that he give it a minute's thought.
And, you can be sure that IF "a single suggestion by anyone–a doctor, a scientist, a political figure–that we needed to cancel Mardi Gras" had been suggested to him that he would have pronounced it to be ridiculous fear-mongering with a laughing "laissez les bon temps rouler!"

Perhaps not a popular sentiment here, but he probably made the right decision with the info he had. Leadership is hard because you are always making decisions with an element of doubt due to lack of perfect info. I don't know much about Gov. Edwards, and I'm as big a Trump supporter as there can be, but I think he should be cut some slack on this one.

He is the senior executive. Who is above him the chain of command?

Feckless.
The phrase "Rather than look back, I am focused on today and going forward" has been scripted by the Dems as the way to deflect incompetence. Pretty sure De Blasio used EXACT same statement.
Reminds me of "What difference does it make now!"

Maybe you and I would have made the same decision.
But I doubt if we were in his position, we'd blame someone else for it. I guess it's another instance of Orange Man Bad. Heck, if Trump would cure cancer, the lefties would complain about the cancer specialists are out of work.

The Governors of Louisiana and the Mayors of New Orleans never do seem to know about the coronavirus or Hurricane Katrina. I wonder what they do?

As a former Louisianan, I have a serious question for y’all: why did you elect this guy? Surely the Republican candidate would have been better.

I lived in New Orleans back in the mid-60's when it really was NEW ORLEANS. Boy was it fun. Not anymore after the Libs took over.

To be fair, how many people were concerned about the coronavirus back at the end of February? It certainly wasn't being broadcast on the evening news every night. If it was reported on, it had to do with China moving millions of people out of a city because of a virus, but it was viewed as a problem in China, not in the U.S.

Honestly we had Mardi Gras in my area and are not experiencing NOLA like virus cases. I think it has more to do with the NOLA being an international airline hub.

Nobody was canceling events then. The NBA played until March 11. SXSW was a surprise last minute cancelation in March, and that was done by the Mayor of Austin, not Governor Abbott. We can't judge this guy using 20/20 hindsight, even if most of the decisions he makes are insane.

He was briefed, but he dindu nuffin because Mardi Gras brings badly needed tourist revenue to a dying city. The black mayor of the Chocolate City dindu nuffin neither. And it's OK; Democrats are never held to account, provided they say the magic words: Orange Man Bad.
