Torching heather, popular with gamekeepers but bad for the environment, is now outlawed in several upland areas of northern England. The ban is a blow to grouse shoots, which burn older heather to make way for younger, more nutritious plants for grouse to feed on, but environmental groups say the practice harms the environment. Research by the University of Leeds has found that burning grouse moors degrades peatland habitat, releases climate-altering gases, reduces biodiversity and increases flood risk

In 15 years they will wring their hands about the growth of invasive species that had been controlled by the periodic burning, and then will blame the uncontrolled higher temperature massive wildfires that sweep across the heather Moors on global warming. See: California.

This practise of burning old growth to allow for new plants to replace them is done on every wild Blueberry field in North America.

Oh! I thought a 'grouse shoot' was when the media was targeted.

#5, where do we sign up for that grouse shoot. I suggest we make it a "pay-per-shoot" annually. It would retire our national debt in no time.

I doubt that any of their claims are true. In general, fire improves open land, keeps it open. The Indians regularly burned the prairies to improve the habitat.

Burning the area gets rid of all the seeds of invasive plants, letting new and much healthier heather and other appropriate plants grow. Environmentalists have been proving for decades worldwide that they are absolutely clueless when it comes to ecological management. The best managers of the lands are those who use and take care of them, like foresters, ranchers, hunters and so on. The worst are the environmentalists themselves, who do not maintain or manage but destroy with their ignorance. Funny how some of these environmentalists don't mind burning vehicles on car lots, homes under construction, and so on. They really don't care about the environment, just enjoy being the spanner in the gears of society, slowing down or stopping people from conducting their business.
Anyway, this is why the grass seed and hay farmers in Oregon anyway, control burn their lands before replanting. They know that this destroys any plant seed that could take root which could actually be poisonous to animals when the grass becomes either animal feed or grass seed for export. It is a hassle, but it does work.

Funny that #7 mentions the native Indians doing controlled burns. I had a history teacher in college who was also an archaeologist, and he said that he could show environmentalists proof that they actually did controlled burns in the forests to get rid of the underbrush that made hunting for food harder. This is why the Left dumbs down their students by the way. You get a nation of gullible drones, instead of people who love history, who know history and who are aware that the Left is wrong.
