ANNAPOLIS, Md. — Authorities were searching Friday for the daughter and a grandson of former Maryland Lt. Gov. Kathleen Kennedy Townsend after a canoe they were paddling in the Chesapeake Bay didn’t return to shore. Gov. Larry Hogan identified the missing relatives as Maeve Kennedy Townsend McKean, 40, and McKean’s 8-year-old son, Gideon Joseph Kennedy McKean. Hogan said at a news conference on Friday that he spoke with Kathleen Kennedy-Townsend about her missing relatives. All politics aside, my heart and prayers are with the family. Such a tragedy.

Apparently wearing lifejackets wasn't a priority. Taking a canoe out in the ocean and not coming back is worthy of the Darwin for the captain of the vessel. The 8-year-old boy was not being well taken care of is all of this had a tragic ending. The Kennedy Curse strikes again. Toxicology reports on Kathleen will be interesting. My heart and prayers are with them.

Not to make light of a tragedy, but the Kennedy's do seem to have a problem when they venture over water. Maybe they should stick to dry land from now on.

Dying in usual ways seems to be a Kennedy genetic trait. Yesterday the winds were gusting at time over 30 mph. Waves heights on the Chesapeake were in the 2-4 feet range. This is not a good time to go kayaking or canoeing in open waters. Doing stupid things usually results bad things happening.

What is it about Kennedys and vehicles? Drive off a bridge, crash an aircraft, flip a jeep, or flip a canoe.
All that said, let's hope that they are somehow OK.

Oh, this is rich. The Kennedys must have a recessive gene that causes them to lose their minds around aircraft, boats, cars and skis.
Sorry - but you can’t fix stupid.

Kayaking on a smooth lake summers in Montana always wore a life jacket.
Next time my dog joins me she will also wear one, even though she is an excellent swimmer.
But then, our last names are not Kennedy.

Politics aside, and with no actual statistics in front of me, it does seem like this family has had more than its share of misfortune.

Am I the only one who thinks this may have been deliberate? It certainly wouldn't be the first time a mother took her child with her in a murder/suicide.

I live in the area. Thursday was not a good boating day. No reason to be on the water. There is a ban on boating except for fishing for food. No commercial fishing. Maeve and son should not have been out there for any reason. Irresponsible woman.

#23 Picture shows them to be a very happy family. Too natural to be faked. I think - from reading - that there always was a certain risk taking behavior with the family. Poor mother and child. RIP

In this day and age what kind of mother would not put a life jacket on her 8-year-old child on ANY boat in the Chesapeake Bay?

If no funny business with the dad, mom must have been drunk or something. Stupid decisions made while drunk: it's a long list. Plus, her ability to deal with capsizing would be greatly reduced.
