Crazy times cry out for good music — the kind that sends your spirits soaring, even as it helps keep you grounded. That often means classic rock for some, but for me, it’s classical music, period. I grew up with a musician who, when she wasn’t leading her Brooklyn elementary school’s glee club, could usually be found at our piano. I’d fall asleep to Bach fugues and Beethoven sonatas, seeing pictures in my head and making up lyrics for the glorious sounds coming from our living room.
When Mom wasn’t playing, radio station WQXR was. I still listen to it today, all the time —

There's also KUSC, although they do play far too much Mozart.

Thanks for posting. One of my favorites is Mussorgsky's Promenade Pictures at an Exhibition; this is just the beginning, but it is beautiful : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R1GwvPzzK1k

Well now you're in my wheelhouse! Holst's masterpiece is lovely, and I've always admired its uniqueness. Desert island for the rest of my life? Beethoven, hands-down.
But, Bach absolutely never, ever fails to cheer me up....happiest music ever!
I've been filling my house with lots of music lately, and I've even been able to practice more.
Nice find, OP!

Anything conducted by Christopher Hogwood but especially Handel’s Messiah and Handel’s Coronation Athens. Most of both need to be played loud too for full appreciation.

This is a great list. I would also like to add pretty much any organ symphony by Charles Marie Widor but most especially the 5th Symphony with its soaring Toccata. And I do mean soaring...not like the Bravo Sierra 'Soaring' that the MSM still uses to describe anything that comes out of Obama's mouth.

Music hath the power to soothe the savage breast. It is a gift from God especially in times of trouble when it can express feelings we cannot express with words.

Rachmaninoff’s piano concerti (all 3) and Mendelssohn’s violin concerto.
And for a little lighter note, John Williams’ movie scores.

I found, several weeks ago, the best way to keep my spirits "soaring", is to turn off FOX. I tune in my Classic Country station on my TV and it keeps my day from sinking into despair. If you watch FOX, they have the funeral music going, the graphic showing how many folks have the Virus. The WHOLE DAY is devoted to the virus. ALL guests are there to talk about it. It's like putting on a revolving turntable because how many ways can you say this is serious? I found it was depressing me, so I don't watch it until the 5:00 briefing. When that is over, I'm done (sometimes before it's over because the questions for Trump get repetitive). I shut it off an go make dinner! We watch the Local news at 10 pm and they tell us what our governor had put in place. Other than that, I already know what to do and not to do!

Indeed, the best classical music is KUSC. I stream it every morning. It is as essential as a cup of coffee and sudoku.

I was 19 years old when I got my forst job at a radion station. It was solid classical music. Much of which, especially operas drove me crazy. But I also discovered lots of classics that have been life lonf favorites, Dvorak's "New World Symphony" is one. Franz Lizst's "Le Prelude: was another, mch of it was used in the ancient Flash Gordon serials. Rezniceks wrote Donna Diona Overture which contained Sgt. Preston of the Yukon as his theme. Stations was bak then used classical music because it was public domain. Many, many other classican pieces were also used. I am glad I worked at that station. Pay was awfl, but it was a foot in the door, but te edcation was well worth it.
