This disease is manageable and treatable, Kenya's first coronavirus patient has said.
The lady identified as Brenda spoke on Wednesday as she, along with another patient Brian, held a live video chat with President Uhuru Kenyatta.
The two recovered patients were accompanied by Health CS Mutahi Kagwe at Afya House.
Brenda urged Kenyans be responsible citizens and report to health authorities once they exhibit the Covid-19 have symptoms.

Why don’t we have double blind clinical trials of antimalarials yet?

What about the disease they gave us? We suffered for eight years!

The article does not address the 'treatable' part of the statement. She was given a mask and put in isolation. No description of any 'treatment'. Being young and healthy may have been what allowed her to recover, however not everyone fits that description.

So what was the treatment?

Last week the French researcher Didier Raoult reported
"..by administering hydroxychloroquine combined with azithromycin, they were able to observe an improvement in all cases, except in one patient who arrived with an advanced form, who was over the age of 86, and in whom the evolution was irreversible.. Our study concerns 80 patients, without a control group because we offer our protocol to all patients with no contraindication. This is what the Hippocratic Oath that we have taken dictates to us."

#1, that was in the WH news conference, they addressed this yesterday. The hyrochloroquine testing has been ongoing for, I believe three days so far, being watched very closely in WH.
If anyone wants to REALLY learn the medical details about what docs know about precisely, on a microbiological level, how this virus attacks, and damages the body, and then how the docs currently know how to treat it, here is a really excellent lecture. Don't let the dumb backwards baseball cap and cutesy intro fool you. This guy is really smart, and really knows this stuff. It is long, but any who really want to know how this works, how each of the antivirals and treatment works to interrupt the virus. He starts off with the basics of epidemiology, then goes on into how this virus attacks the body, and finally into treatments.
VERY detailed, looks like it was intended for MDs to make sure that they are up to speed on the latest stuff.
IMO, worth the time spent, but if you have no cellular biology background, you might not like it.

If you want to actually learn how this virus attacks the body, what the medical treatments are, in deep medical detail, down on the cellular level how they block the virus, or block the cytokine storm, or other of the cascade of health problems that are possible, here is a really excellent video. Don't let the cutsy beginning or the dumb backwards baseball cap throw you off, this guy is very smart, and a pretty good explainer. I think the target audience is medical students, so be prepared to freeze it and do some term lookups if you aren't up on your cellular biology and such.

I watched it yesterday, and consider it time well spent. It starts out with the basics of epedemiology, too, how diseases spread, and what they know about this one. It is dated March 15, so they still had mostly the
Chinese mortality "data", too high mortality statistics. Still, I hope some of you will really enjoy the education.

If you really want to get down into the detailed science on epidemiology, pathophysiology and diagnostics of this disease, as of March 15th, do a search on "Ninja Nerd Science COVID-19".
I have tried to post the link, comments are apparently blocked by site software, so you'll have to find it on your own. REALLY good stuff, but I think the intended audience is MD students and MDs, depending on your education, you may spend some time pausing it and looking up terms, I did. Still, really interesting stuff. And don't let the cutsy graphics at the start or dumb backwards baseball cap fool you, he really knows his material.

The US has over 7,000 recovered Wuhan virus patients. How come the media here aren't interviewing them?
Never mind.

In the very, very, great majority, 80% to 90%, of COVID-19 cases, the treatment is to let your immune system handle it. It's not a super bug.
We need a treatment that will help those at risk weather the storm and prevent them from ending up in an ICU. The Hydroxychloroquine cocktail for $20 per patient sure sounds like the ticket. They have been doing trials in New York for over a week now. Unofficial reports are that the trials are going well with a high success rate. That the government has ordered up millions of doses suggests that at the very least is helpful.

The one Kenyan with whom we are way too familiar has ruined it for all the others. Glad you recovered, though.

#1, they are ongoing in NY, the reported this in the WH news conference yesterday. Trials are under way, but no results yet, still only a few days into them.
If anyone is up for a really deep, technical look at the epidemiology and the cellular biology, and human body's response to this disease..... this is really good. Ignore the silly graphics and dumb backwards hat, this is apparently a lecture for MD students. It starts slow.... gets great about 15 minutes in.

there is a followup with patient diagnosis, disease management, use of ventilators and how the various drugs work against the disease. Very cool, technical stuff, I found them both fascinating.

Double blind with a placebo is unethical when the disease can kill. I learned that when reading Microbe Hunters when I was a teen. If the doctors think they have a cure it should in no way be withheld. 'Science' might lose but people will live.
