A Lakewood couple who hosted a gathering Sunday of 40 to 50 people on the lawn and street in front of the home have been charged with five counts of child endangerment and the husband was charged with violating the ban on gatherings due to the coronavirus outbreak, authorities said. Eliezer Silber, 37, and his wife Miriam Silber, 34, were informed that large gatherings in New Jersey have been banned for more than a week due to the worsening coronavirus pandemic, the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office said in a statement.(Snip) The party is the latest large group gathering to be broken up by Lakewood police.

The article does not state the purpose of the gathering and that may be by design. If it is a religious gathering, they are protected by the 1st Amendment.

They never finish the sentence ".....crowds are broken up by police due to corona virus - but even if they get it 98% will survive. The common cold kills more than this virus has and the flu is running rampant and not one word from the media. We are crossing into dangerous territory now breaking up groups of people with police. Scary times.

Is anyone else concerned about our "Freedoms"? This couple didn't hogtie people and force them to their outdoor party. This is a police state action and I think its disgusting and alarming. I do not like neighbor calling the cops on neighbors to rat them out. I find it shocking how FAST the people in this country fell to their knees to obey...

#2, this community is about as far from liberal as one could get. You might want to google Lakewood, NJ before posting. And re #5, with freedom comes responsibility. A giant middle finger in the air to the rest of us is not responsible behavior, IMO.

Like #5, I'm more worried about the police state that's rapidly developing with the people's complete submission than this virus. The majority will survive the virus. I'm not being irresponsible by shopping for food or getting gas or picking up my prescriptions. And if I want to attend a party or other gathering, I will do so. I think everyone's completely lost their minds and when all is said and done and the dust settles, the overreaction by government and nosy neighbors will not be forgotten.

There is a reason that the new Rochelle cluster and the borough park Brooklyn and Williamsburg Brooklyn numbers are so high. It will never be mentioned.

So we have a large gathering, 40 or 50, on somebody's lawn. Outdoors. Large gatherings stay small unless large numbers see fit to attend. At that point they're on their own. Go have a cup out of the punchbowl and try to stay upwind. If somebody calls the cops, run for it. Oh and if it's Jersey, Baltimore, Chicago, DC, Philly, Pittsburgh, or NYC, bring your Glock or duck. Just another weekend.

Honest question: would illegals be written a summons? I'm not sure how that works. Does N.J. have liberal sanctuary state policies? Are safe distances enforced for everyone? Here in Houston, if you drive by a public park, you are likely to see large gatherings that are not practicing safe distances. Today I saw a patrol car at the park. Not sure why the patrol car was there. Anybody observe gatherings like this in their neighborhoods? We are in new territory with this stuff.

They are Hasidic and they are ignoring what is right now common sense re behavior that spreads the virus. They've done it in Brooklyn and in the Rockland County NY, town of Monsey. Their NY rabbi has told them not to do this and they have not listened. So, what do you do? Arrest? Ticket? Help me out here.

IMO, intelligent people will go ahead and gather and so will the fools. However, the ones with a smidgeon of common sense will assess their situations and avoid the crowds. The regrets are when their virus is passed on to their loved ones and watch them DIE. However, Selfish Greed are human nature, more powerful than common sense.

Remarkable story. Lakewood comprises a huge religious sect that moved in primarily from Brooklyn, and is flat-out ignoring requests to stop congregating. As a result, Lakewood, population around 100K, boasts the most cases of Chinavirus in NJ, at 371 cases, vs the runner-up, Newark, population 282K, with 268 cases.
