Orleans Parish has the highest per-capita death rate for the coronavirus among all American counties to date, a new analysis by The Times-Picayune | The Advocate shows.
More disturbingly, perhaps, it’s not even a close call. The county with the No. 2 rate — Richmond County, N.Y., better known as Staten Island — has a rate half that of New Orleans.

Orleans Parish is run by a moronic Democrat transplant from California. The City Council is infested with nutball Democrats. It survived a British invasion and brutal Union occupation during the Civil War, but it might not survive the effing Democrats.

Louisiana also tops the nation in flu cases and deaths,

New Orleans is the largest city in Louisiana so you would expect it to have a large chunk of the total COVID-19 and flu cases.

Do Chinese tourists attend Mardi Gras? Just asking.

But Gov. Fredo, Sr. says N.Y. is the epicenter of this pandemic and must get the bulk of the government bailout money.
As an aside, the NO area has a premier medical facility, Ochners, but it's hard even for them to cope with the shear numbers. My daughter-in-law is a respiratory therapist there and they are being overwhelmed some days. We pray she doesn't bring it home to our grandchildren every day she works. Thank goodness we live on the North shore, out of the city.

There turning the convention center into a hospital. The lack of traffic is scary. All of our businesses are in the toilet. About the only thing left to do is pray.

FTA: New Orleanians, on balance, are less healthy than other Americans, with high rates of diabetes, hypertension, obesity and other health conditions that can make one more apt to die from coronavirus.
I don't think they can blame this on Mardi Gras.

There is no such thing as "Richmond County" in New York.
That name was changed to Staten Island County decades ago.

If the liberal Democrats running New Orleans put two and two together and figure out that they had a lot of Chinese visitors from China during the Mardi Gras time, that might be a clue as to how the virus got to their City.

Different countries and cities have very different death rates. Italy is 136/million, Spain 106/million, or if you prefer, 13.6/100K and 10.6/100K, and NOLA has 11.8/100K. California has 2.1/100K, Kansas has 0.1/100K. All over the place.
So, NOLA has a death rate between Spain and Italy, highest of any US county. So many possible reasons.
Genetic differences of certain ethnic groups? Lifestyle choices - smoking, diabetes, obesity? Age distribution? Norms of public hygiene? Norms of personal hygiene? Use of public transit? Quality of health care? Seems too complex to get a handle on this right now, maybe ever.

Same problem as Italy, more than the average number of ultra-senior citizens and close living conditions. I believe Italy is also cleaner than New Orleans but I've never been to Italy.

#12, not necessarily true that Italy is cleaner. Very city, and neighborhood dependent.

#6, remind your DIL that people really do support those who are out there saving lives every day, especially when this stuff is happening.
A friend is a physical therapist. Found out that she worked with a patient yesterday who tested positive today. Wears gloves, disinfects before going home....but family is worried.

I have to admit that I used to watch a cable tv show about alligator hunting in Louisiana, and another one where swamp people hunt for sunken logs in canals there.
One of the things that came up[ there was the cajun stuff, and 'alternative medicine' as well as self medicine, I would call it.
In one case, a woman hunter sprained her ankle, and went to a faith healer, who put her hands on the sprained ankle and prayed over it.
There seems to be everything from voodoo to native american to cajun traditions in medical care.
If people with mild to moderate Kung Flu in Louisiana followed what I saw on those shows, those virus cases would never be reported to the public health system, thus causing an over inflated mortality rate.

If it's spread so easily, how much is going thru the AC in multi-unit buildings like this senior center or apartments in NY?

One thing is being made clear through all of this. Our country is really bad at math!
The more testing that is done, the more we realize that the death rate is much closer to the regular flu.
If you only test the 100 people who show up at the hospital and 4 die then you have a 4% death rate, which is very scary.
But if you test an entire city of 10,000 and get 300 confirmed but only 4 die, then you have a very different view. And as a result, a lot less reason to panic.
Also factor in the reported attempts to pad the numbers by claiming deaths are corona related, when they are not.
