Italy has a tight Chinese connection, and not the Bruce Lee movie variety of the same name. From the South China Morning Post, “The Chinese began migrating to Italy about 30 years ago but numbers have swelled in the past decade, bringing the total population to about 300,000.” A travel website shows 9 inexpensive flight options between China and Italy.
A Chinese couple from Wuhan took advantage of these travel opportunities in mid-January, visiting Verona, Parma and Rome before becoming febrile and quarantined in hospital, testing positive for the virus. How many Italians did this couple encounter in restaurants and shops?
The Wuhan virus was well known at the time

The woke Florence mayor encouraged Italians to “hug a Chinese”. How did that work out? How many Italians died of Coronavirus due to political correctness?
So sad...

Comparing countries is like comparing apples to oranges.
The U.S. has 330 million people vs. 60 million in Italy.
But Italy is the size of California, not a huge country protected by oceans on both sides as the U.S. is..
As of today there are 24,000 more case of coronavirus in Italy than in the U.S.
As of today there have been 5476 deaths from coronavirus in Italy compared to 458 in the U.S.

Italy is in trouble because -
1. The political establishment is very left-leaning and generally in grid lock.
2. Political correctness.
3. A high percentage of the citizenry is +65 and in poor health.
4. A high percentage of the citizens are chain smokers.
5. An open border with China (infected Chinese come and go as they please).
It will get worse there before it gets better. How unfortunate for them.

A combination of elderly population, smoking, pollution, open borders has led to this. I was hoping to visit Rome this year, but I guess not. I can only hope that this crisis will lead to better policies.

The article is exactly right. Another factor is that students attending the universities in Northern Italy are returning home to their parents and grandparents. Also, Italians have always been very physical when greeting one another with kisses and hugs. This is not new. It's just part of the culture. But in this case, "hug a Chinese" was not a wise thing to encourage, obviously. One other factor is that South Korea has been treating patients who have been diagnosed with the virus with a couple of drugs whose names I can't remember right now.

"See Rome and Die." Used to be the reason why the eternal city has always been at the top of my bucket list. For now I think I'll just enjoy the travelogues about the Trevi Fountain and the Spanish Steps. I'm not ready to die yet.

China has invaded Italy. They're buying up everything. Italy has poor leadership, weak military, and is rich in resources. The population is age heavy. So this convinces me China spread coronavirus there intentionally.

I think our borders should permanently closed to China.

The Italian and Chinese relationship go way back to Marco Polo and The Silk Road era. Modern textile and fashion industries in Italy have flourished from cheap Chinese labor and a mutual trade relationship for centuries, especially the past several decades.

just a couple things about comments posted here.
1.last map i looked at shows Italy WAY more bordered by oceans than the USA. And on the north, isn't there something called the Alps on that border?
2. the phrase is "See Naples and Die", not Rome
Now i feel better and will go take a well deserved nap...

I have never used the Italian health care system personally, but a close relative has.
She broke a bone very badly in Rome about a decade ago. She described the hospital in Rome that she was taken to as "like the Turkish prison in the movie Midnight Express", and would not permit them to operate on the bone, just splint it and stabilize her for transport back to the USA. She wanted OUT of that hospital ASAP. She described it as a medieval looking fortress like building, very scary.
I am only reporting what she told me. And she is an educated person, a military pilot, later airline pilot, has seen a lot of the world, not prone to flights of fancy. Perhaps there are many other modern, new facilities that she didn't see. I don't know.

Heard a theory that corona virus doesn't fare as well in a dryer climate. It dries up faster. What's the humidity like in Southern Italy. Isn't the climate near tropical?
Bugs originating in China have always wreaked havoc all over the world. Didn't the black plague of the middle ages originate in China? The point is all China has to do to create a pandemic is interact with the rest of the world since they don't invest enough in disease prevention.
Thanks to China, the world has a viral pandemic which in turn spawned a panic pandemic and an economic pandemic.

One person can infect hundreds. It happened in the US in Seattle and is happening now in NYC. Since China delayed their admission of the problem, travel back and forth to Italy probably involved thousands of people.

Italy is indeed protected by water on all sides except the boot top. Their problem is their liberal virtue signalling and love of diversity that brought them to this current crisis. I feel for the citizens of Italy, victimized by the idiots who they elect to run their local governments. If there was ever a need to invent and idiot detector for politicians, it would be now. That way we can know who the idiots are, long before they get elected to do damage.

#13, I lived in Naples, and winter temps rarely reach freezing at night, almost never, highs in the 40s-50s in Jan, summers peak temps in low 80s. Humidity is around 60-70% most of the year, so not "tropical" but certainly reasonably warm and humid, compared to the American plains states. A pleasant climate. Siciily is much warmer and wetter, too. Big changes in climate with elevation, and they have some good sized mountains.

Italy is always in trouble, careens from crisis to crisis. As for the coronavirus, we are now finding most of the diagnosis were wrong, that, and no surprise, Italians were dying anyway, that Italians had a horrible medical system, and that Italians are bankrupt, and have never been any other way, since the empire.

Thank you, President Trump, for your wise leadership. Due to PDT's efforts our economy was strong before this crisis, and the foundation he poured is secure enough to weather this national emergency. He is forging a new way for the federal government to interact with private enterprise; businesses and the people are no longer the enemy. We are only experiencing the birth pangs of a restored America.
