The Trump administration, moving quickly to halt the spread of the coronavirus, is seriously considering grounding all passenger air traffic for up to 30 days, temporarily halting stock trading on Wall Street, and imposing a shelter-in-place rule, according to officials.
Key officials have begun alerting industry leaders, Capitol Hill, and agencies that the “radical” plan could come early next week if the warlike efforts to stop the spread of the virus fail.
On Thursday, the administration began to prepare the nation for 9/11-style moves when the State Department issued a “Level Four” warning against traveling overseas. The warning is the most severe that the department has.

Sounds too extreme to me. It may be serious but is not the Bubonic plague.

Been hearing similar rumors all day. The numbers don't justify this unless we're being lied to. I don't get it, but I have wondered why you can't go to a bar but you can get on a plane.

I get the "limiting deaths" thing.
Is there any plan to "limit the death of Constitutional bounds"?
Auto accidents, drownings, combined kill how many thousands each year?
Limit driving to the lake or swimming pools?
Either our governments know more than they are telling us or the proportions of risk to draconian "action" are seriously out of kilter.

I wish they had halted trading a few weeks ago, but I might have been destroyed if I was unable to unwind my leverage. I had a lot of Boeing stock. Got killed in losses, but I got out at about $290... about $200/sh above where it was a couple days ago.
Halting trading would play havoc on the options market, which is time based.

On the other hand, looking out for our young and elderly population is worthy. What is needed is an accurate, concise and above all honest assessment of the situation. Tough knowing where to go if the destination is unclear. Panic will get you nothing but dead.

Way out of proportion to reality. He needs to get back to being a level-head.

Yeah, turn the economy off and make us into one of those third-world s***holes that Trump previously talked about. That’s a great way to fight disease. It’s our economy that provides the resources needed. Of course the number of cases is going up, we’re doing lots more testing. But as the data improves the death rate is falling. I’m a big fan, but if Trump does this he’s lost me.

FTA: "...if the warlike efforts to stop the spread of the virus fail." Being considered in case current setup isn't successful....a planner's gotta' plan.

Safari Man is 100% correct that shutting down the markets would make a complete mess for options and futures. One of the primary components of the valuation of an option or future contract is how long till that contract expires. Stopping trade while the "Theta" clock ticks down would cause chaos. A big part of these markets is to maintain hedges to protect against unexpected downside moves.

Nooooooooooo! Please, president Trump, restore sanity. This is literally a case of the cure being worse than the disease.
I would like the President's office to post deaths due to flu next to the numbers of deaths due to Coronavirus. Let's get some perspective! Stop, please, stop trying to save lives by destroying people's lives! Destroying businesses, retirement savings, the constitution, this is not worth the price! The number of deaths worldwide are TINY!!!! I mourn the loss of anyone, but, sadly, people die by the hundreds of thousands each year by the flu. We accept that. Why is a few thousand deaths by coronavirus unacceptable? Why are their deaths more valued than the death of a flu patient?

Trump is having his Atlantic City Casino moment. He is going to bankrupt the country to kill a virus that can be treated with a 70 yr old drug that cost pennies a pill. Our politicians are nuts.

I am getting more confused daily. There had better be some hard endpoints laid out to this disruption before this country goes nuts. Folks are losing everything. Start giving some predictions and goals of when this will end.

Every day I get up hoping the hysteria will be dialed down a notch, every day I am disappointed. This is absolutely surreal. There has to be something else going on. At first I thought it was the libs trying to destroy the economy so they could beat Trump, but he seems to be promoting it too. We live in the twilight zone.

Confine us to our homes. Great idea. And how long, pray tell, would we need to do this before the "threat" is over? At work they have the janitor cleaning basically the only restroom in a 100,000 sf building every 30 minutes. He has to shut it down completely while doing so. My office has a view of the door from our entrance, but people who have to walk the length of the building to find it closed... what a mess.

We may as well of had Obama for the last 3 years. We would be at the same place with a lot less volatility. Trump has now put into place more giveaways than Obama and the Democrats would have ever have dared. This is a disaster. I thought Trump would be easily re-elected, now I think Biden will be the next president. Trump has done it to himself.
