Angelina Dixon sat in a lounge chair on her front porch shortly before 9:30 a.m. Wednesday sipping steaming coffee and smoking a cigarette. A 40-foot long yellow school bus pulled up just across the street, a teacher’s aide popped out, hurried over, greeted her warmly and handed her a white, plastic bag. It contained a breakfast pack of a muffin, a box of cereal, a pint of milk and a box juice. It also included a lunch of turkey and cheese cold cuts on a Kaiser roll and chips or Cheez Its crackers. Dixon’s son received one of about 100 meal bags

Just found it interesting that Ms. Dixon's son needed free meals but she was sitting on the porch smoking a cigarette. Don't know what cigarettes go for today but they were $2.50 a pack 25 years ago when I quit. Give up the cigarettes and buy your boy food!

Suspect that New Jersey's higher. In Texas around 8 bucks a pack. Anybody got a 2 pack a day habit ? In TX 16 bucks will buy 3 squares a day for a family of 4 if you cook at home.

Her parents should be providing her food. They no doubt get buckets of food stamps....probably sell those and get free food from schools.
I am just not at all sympathetic to "the children are starving" story. I do not believe it.

Yeah she has time and money to sit on her porch smoking a cig but not enough of either to fix her kid some lunch. Makes perfect sense. Gimmedat handout!

There was a time, not so long ago, in this country where people were offended if someone suggested they couldn't care for their own children. My family was large, and poor. We took peanut butter sandwiches to school. They offered us "free lunch tickets" and my father refused. Never took a dime of welfare, we grew a garden and raised our own livestock. Never went hungry a day in my life.

#5, exactly.
How is it all the other taxpayers responsibility to take care of these losers? It's their own responsibility, not everyone else's.

All previous posters are correct. If you want to put a stop to this, the answer is simple: Get rid of the U.S. Department of Agriculture. It's been totally useless for about 100 years. The USDA runs not only the school lunch program, but also food stamps. We could save boatloads of money, AND force a whole bunch of people to stand on their own two feet, just by abolishing this government agency.

I can guarantee you that some parent on that route that day asked this question: "Where's mine?".

#8's comment made me wonder how much of this food to the parents take away and eat themselves.

you would be surprised at how many schools send food home with kids for the week end. They bring an extra back pack so they can take the food and their books home. Its unbelievable

Today, or any day, legitimate Registered Nurses are in very short supply and can easily get hired to a nursing job earning good money. Here we have a supposed Registered Nurse who is not working, but is sitting on a porch lounge chair drinking coffee and smoking a cigarette. No doubt this person is obtaining SNAP program food stamps for her and her two children. Yet she is depending on public school personnel to come by in a school bus to feed her two children breakfast and lunch. Anyone see anything wrong with millions of parents all over the country double-dipping on the food stamp program and the school lunch program to feed their kids? How do you think this apparently unemployed mother gets enough money to purchase her high priced cigarettes?

I always told my graduate nursing students, who took smoke breaks, 'a smoking nurse is like a pregnant nun - not a good picture.
Many recipients of food stamps sell their allotments, 50 cents on the dollar.

The primary mission of public schools is to provide meals to children whose parents already receive food stamps. This is very pro-business, according to the Chamber of Commerce; think how much federal money the huge foodservice vendors take in on this. Also, if this is the state of things, this country would be doomed in a real war.
