Darrin Lundeen thought he did everything right when he went shopping for a company to put solar panels on his house. He looked at online reviews and settled on five finalists. He checked the companies out with the Better Business Bureau. He even decided against hiring the firm with the lowest bid. But a year after Altaray Solar installed a $28,000 system on his home in New Hope, it still doesn’t work. Even worse, Lundeen has to deal with about $6,000 worth of damage to his basement, which flooded last year when power was unwittingly cut to his sump pump.(Snip) Unfortunately for Lundeen and hundreds of other Altaray

Installed the solar panels and "they didn't work".....probably didn't put out power at night or on overcast days.
Sad that people got ripped off, but really solar is, by definition, a ripoff of the taxpayers and of the electrical ratepayers, so every system not installed is a good thing for taxpayers and electrical rate payers.

Our natural gas furnace and $0.08/kwh air conditioners work great all year round, Never pay over $300/mo, w capital cost of abt $15k for 15 years. Worked fine first day they were installed, no damage.

Solar is a scam. You shouldn’t have to spend thousands of dollars to save s hundred or row on electricity. The return on investment break even point is twenty years down the road or about equal to the life span expectancy of the equipment and ordering of the current technology. Solar is for suckers for the most part.

FTA: "Dave Livermore said he signed up for a $45,000 solar system with Altaray after one of the company’s salesmen unexpectedly showed up at his door in Forest Lake and talked him and his wife into a deal."
Never, ever buy something from someone who shows up "unexpectedly" at your door, unless it is Girl Scouts with a wagon-load of cookies.

There may be people who disagree with me but solar is tax subsidized snake oil for those who aren't in on it.

If you are cold, just rub two sticks together.
Solar problem fixed.

Also when the power goes off, you need power from the power company to switch over to your batteries.
And a switch to turn off so you don't shock the power crews trying to fix the problem.

I have no doubt that there will be a time when solar and other "green energy" actually works. That time is not now. Still working on it, experimenting, failing, and trying again. Learning. But not ready for prime time.

What do you want for solar? Long days and clear skies. Minnesota in winter has neither. And batteries don't like cold temperatures, but perhaps newer designs and materials have fixed that.
At least they are not as far North as the UK. The government there gave out huge subsidies for solar.

Sorry Darrin, your problems didn't begin with the failed installation. They began when you fell for the bullshiite being shoveled by the huckster solar salesman.

It used to be chinchilla ranching that these scammers were pushing, later mink, then llamas and emus. Now solar panels.

I looked at solar! Power outages with sub zero temps! Nope! Bought a chord of wood and will heat the family room with the fireplace! I know...mother gaia will be weeping as I inject carbo directly into the air, but I will be toasty!
