Utah Senate votes unanimously
to decriminalize polygamy
among consenting adults

Original Article

Utah lawmakers voted Tuesday to put new regulations on pornography and remove some on polygamy in separate proposals moving quickly through the Legislature in the deeply conservative state. Senators voted unanimously to change state law to remove the threat of jail time for consenting adult polygamists, a step that supporters argue will free people in communities that practice plural marriage to report abuses, like children being taken as wives, without fear of prosecution. A majority of people in Utah belong to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, which had an early history of polygamy but has forbidden it for more than a century.

Utah thus becomes a Welcoming Area for Muslims.

At least Mormons are heterosexual, for the most part. No legal or logical difference between this and Oberkfell. But they're still cultists who believe a weirdo from upstate New York received revelations from God. No thank you.

Hmmmm. Looks like the headline might be a little misleading, or I am confused after reading the article, Romney is crap, but I have always like Utah, dating back to when I used to lobby the Beehive State’s legislature back into the 1980s. Beautiful state and very nice people. And I am not Morman.

This will also apply to women who want more than one husband and the alphabets, too. Right? It would have to, otherwise it would be descriminatory. (The lawyers ae going to eat this stuff up! Think about how divorce, child custody and inheritance cases are going to play out.) Putting the "poly" in polygamy!!

I really dont have a problem with plural marriages. If the participants are all aware and all on board, what business is it of the government's? They have their regulatory noses in far too much as it is.

Here we have exactly what many advocate: A STATE makes a law based on a STATE issue. So, what's the gripe? This was all easily seen when the gay marriage thing became law of the land. As #7 points out, marriage is a private arrangement. The next issue will be marriageable age...why can't parents give their child to a husband? What's going to stop them? It's coming...

According to the article, this only passed in the Senate. So it's unclear if it will become law. If I were in Utah, I would oppose it. There are many adverse effects of polygamy, such as marriages to underage girls, teenage boys being expelled because they are competition, women wanting to leave and being unable to without losing their children, children being raised in confusing family situations, and general subjugation of women. Consenting adults is one thing, but teenage brides are not adults. Will they raise the marriage age, too?

#12, Arches is better than Bryce, IMO. Bryce is an impressive view, but really you have seen it all with 20 minutes each on two overlooks. Arches is two days, if you hike out to some of the best of the arches. I am always comfortable in Utah.....well, except when it is over 105F, but it's a dry heat. Like an oven. 🙂

To All You Posters: Think it through. It will be discriminatory if multiple marriages are only allowed to men ( and does that include straight, gay, trans going in either direction?) Therefore, ANY adult can marry any number of other adults they want. I guess the only restrictions will be age of concent how closely the partners are related (but some people think repeated first cousin marriages are okay.) What happens if one of the Sister Wives decides she'd like an extra husband or two? And then one of those husbands decides he wants five wives and his own husband to help out, but that husband only wants to marry two of those five wives, including the Sister Wife. What relation is this husband to that blond guy with a beard on the show? (I only see the commercials.) And then wife #3 dies intestate; who inherits? Effectively, there will be no marriage and LOTS of job opportunities for lawyers to ply their trade.

The "gripe" here has nothing whatsoever to do with Utah's right as a sovereign state to pass such a law. Rather, it has everything to do with the moral questions it raises, the legal complications it will cause and the unintended consequences that will quite likely be the result of it. Of course, that may be a difficult distinction for some.

And what's a 16-year-old going to do on a business trip?"
