A plan to clear 35,000kg of rubbish from Everest and five other Himalayan peaks has been slammed by some of Nepal's leading mountaineers. The government says the army will be used for the task, which will cost 860 million Nepali rupees ($7.5m; £5.7m). Last year, they managed to clear about 10,000kg of waste from the region.(Snip) "Only Sherpa guides and porters can do that. They should be given proper compensation to clean up the mountains." Much of the 'trash' is human bodies. Some have been there for decades.

Looking at that picture of a LONG line of people climbing up to the peak, plus knowing that there are dead bodies galore and trash everywhere . . . now doesn't that just make you want to go out and climb Mt. Everest so you can enjoy nature? Yeah, I know that's not why people climb it, but it all seems rather ridiculous to me--especially with all the rubbish, cadavers, and company there today!

Seeing that picture of that long line of people waiting to stand of the summit made this link worth clicking. To make it all the way to the top of Everest only to end up feeling like your at Disneyland must be an incredible let down.

Why risk more human life ending up dying on the mountain? Can't they use drones to pick up the trash?

So it's about compensation. sherpas have had the opportunity to clean up after their own mess. Well, the mess of the folks they are "guiding".

Methinks the Nepal government's plan to use its army, who apparently have no experience climbing Everest, will fail. At the moment, it's just a labor (i.e. $) argument. Apparently even the government bureaucrats who are assigned to manage crowd control at the base camp, cannot tolerate mountain conditions and usually return home after a day or two. We shall see. Why people want to climb Everest? I dunno. I guess it's their business.

In the US we have Smokey Bear telling us to avoid starting forest fires maybe they need a Yeti mascot telling them to leave only their footprints or stay off 'my' mountain.

Everything climbers take up the mountain should be inventoried before they depart. When they come back down, there should be another inventory to determine what was left on the mountain. Fines for missing items should be levied to pay for clean up. I don't blame the citizens for not wanting to clean up other bum's trash!

More trash than that, probably. Thousands of oxygen bottles. Garbage. Human remains. Feces, Tents. Camp stoves. As another poster said, whatever goes up the mountain should come back down the mountain. It will take several years of serious work to clean up the trash. Get serious. Require all climbers to bring back MORE than they take up.

Michael Bloomberg's presidential campaign has struggled to fully address the nominee's well-documented history with women and people of color. One key aspect of that struggle is Bloomberg's own company, Bloomberg LP. Indeed, some of the candidate's purportedly most outrageous remarks were originally memorialized by his own employees in an actual booklet that has been passed around, samizdat-style, for decades by his former staffers, journalists, and political operatives. The booklet — "The Portable Bloomberg: The Wit and Wisdom of Michael Bloomberg" — was crafted by Bloomberg LP employees looking to roast their boss by compiling his allegedly most crude, sexist, and seemingly off-color

A new debit card from the nation's largest black-owned bank with an image of Harriet Tubman throwing a gesture that bears striking resemblance to one from the movie "Black Panther" drew criticism and expressions of disbelief on social media. The famed abolitionist and political activist is shown with fists crossed over her chest, which some saw as a gesture from the Marvel blockbuster movie "Black Panther" about the fictional African country Wakanda. Bank officials said the gesture is not from the movie, but rather the sign for "love" in American Sign Language. OneUnited had been considering using Tubman's image for

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi thinks it’s too soon to rule out a Joe Biden presidency. The California Democrat said in an interview with CNN that the former vice president still has a chance to become the Democratic nominee despite his lackluster showings at the Iowa caucuses and the New Hampshire primary, where he finished fourth and fifth, respectively. She said that although the party has come down to the “winnowing process,” she still sees “everything as an opportunity.” “Quite frankly, with all the respect in the world for Iowa and New Hampshire, I’m not counting Joe Biden out,” she added.

Candidates who flame out early in presidential primaries, almost by definition, do not make history. But Joe Biden may be an exception. Biden’s presidential campaign is now almost certain to fail, but he has done more than any other candidate to shape the outcome. And the result is likely to be disastrous — for Biden’s personal legacy and political agenda. Biden has run for president three times. He has not yet managed to finish higher than fourth in any primary or caucus. Biden may, or may not, have been a good enough politician to win a presidential campaign in his

Now that as many as six serious Democratic candidates remain in the race, pundits increasingly believe the party is headed for a brokered convention. Hold on to your hats if that happens, because it’s even more complicated than it sounds. Presidential nominating conventions used to be “brokered” because the delegates were largely appointed by — and loyal to — political bosses. Delegates voted on multiple ballots as rivals vied for the bosses’ favor, making the quadrennial events the political equivalent of reality television.
