Cats are wearing coronavirus

As the deadly coronavirus outbreak continues to ravage the country, pet owners in China are putting on makeshift masks on their furry friends. Photos on the Chinese social media app Weibo show pets – namely cats – wearing the makeshift masks, many of them made from traditional surgical masks. Owners are cutting holes in the material to accommodate the animal’s eyes while the rest of their face remains covered.

Comments:

Just for fun. I don't think any of my cats would wear that for more than 5 seconds.
And if this virus actually comes to the USA, you are a LOT better off with a real respirator filter, rather than one of those silly surgical masks which do very little to protect you from inhaling a virus. They are meant to keep medical people from breathing into open wounds, possibly exhaling bacteria.

If we ever get to where a mask is advised, a N95 type disposable mask, like a 3M 8210 would be dramatically better than those silly surgical masks. It'll cost more, too.

I asked my cat, Princess Fluffybutt about this. She gave me a disgusted look and went back to washing her backside. I get the feeling that I would need chain mail to even attempt something like this!! 🐈

I just checked for 3M dust masks online. Most places are out, and those that have them are marking up the normal $23-25 for a 20 pack to $160, $300 or higher. OK, that's fun.

The Justice Department said Friday it will not pursue criminal charges against former FBI deputy director Andrew McCabe, after a nearly two-year-long investigation into accusations brought by the agency's independent watchdog who claimed that he lacked "candor" when questioned about leaking to the media. In a letter to McCabe attorney Michael Bromwich obtained by Fox News, Justice Department attorney J.P. Cooney said the investigation is now “closed.” “We write to inform you that, after careful consideration, the Government has decided not to pursue criminal charges against your client, Andrew G. McCabe,’” Cooney wrote.

This isn’t your 2016 Bernie Sanders. Yes, he won New Hampshire. And yes, the PredictIt market has him winning every state on Super Tuesday. But the biggest takeaway from last night as far as the Bernie Sanders campaign goes is that he lost half his voter base from the last election. The question now is whether he can recover that and beat President Trump. Wall Street highly doubts it. It’s already celebrating, coronavirus be damned.
Assuming Sanders is begrudgingly nominated by the powers-that-be in the Democratic Party (he is an I-VT, in the DNCs mind), this is a man who has lost a significant part of the mojo he had

As desert locusts ravage African crops, EU-funded NGOs maneuver in the Kenyan parliament to leave farmers defenseless. Caught flat-footed by the emergency, the FAO struggles to purchase enough pesticides to avert catastrophe. Experts fear it may be too late to avert famine. The worst locust swarms in 70 years descended on East Africa barely a month ago and have already devoured hundreds of thousands of acres of staple crops throughout the region. Every day, the swarms grow larger and travel further into the African continent. As the crop losses mount, experts fear that this new plague, which is hitting African food systems already challenged by epidemic infestations of Fall Armyworm

A comment published last week in Nature, a leading scientific journal, has thrown a monkey wrench into hundreds of studies and media stories that previously predicted dire climate consequences in the future due to increased carbon dioxide (CO2) in our atmosphere. The consequences were predicted by a computer model called Representative Carbon Pathways (RCP), and the worst-case scenario model, RCP8.5, had been cited more than 2,500 times in scientific journals and in hundreds of media stories as the primary need for "urgent action" on climate. Predictions from the RCP8.5 model suggested maximum global temperature increases of nearly 6°C (10.8°F) by the year 2100, shown in Figure 1.

A day after a team of World Health Organization (WHO) medical experts arrived in China to help investigate the deadly coronavirus outbreak, the health agency’s director said the virus poses “a very grave threat for the rest of the world.” Over 1,000 people in China have died after contracting the virus, which has sickened over 43,000 others globally. Just under 400 of those cases have been confirmed in countries outside of China. “With 99 percent of cases in China, this remains very much an emergency for that country, but one that holds a very grave threat for the rest of the world,” WHO director-general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said

Minutes after Chief Justice John Roberts gaveled out President Trump's impeachment trial, which had consumed the Senate for almost three weeks, Majority Leader Sen. Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., got right back to what he's said is his top priority -- confirming judges. Less than half-an-hour after TV networks cut away from the Senate to dive into the ramifications of the body acquitting Trump, McConnell filed cloture on the nomination of Judge Andrew Brasher to the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals, a procedural step that moved the controversial nominee one step closer to confirmation. The body took the next step to confirming Brasher Monday by approving the motion with a 46-41 vote,

The first of 2020's official presidential preference polls to be conducted by adults happens here in New Hampshire (N.H.) on Tuesday. This short essay describes two micro-polls conducted Thursday. I live in southeastern N.H., the Exeter area, which is fairly blue like the adjacent state of Taxachusetts. Thursday was errand day: a stop at a local business and then groceries at a local supermarket. As I drove, I counted yard signs. One each for Bernie, Joe, Tulsi, and Trump. No Amy, no Yang. Two for Warren. And seven for Mayor Pete, the kid from Indiana who shows a modicum of sense.

Former New York City Mayor and Democratic candidate Bloomberg is said to be considering even changing his official residence from New York to Colorado or Florida - where he also has homes - because the electoral college makes it difficult for US president and vice-president to reside in the same state.

The tweet was quickly deleted after users criticized the agency for celebrating a white man during Black History Month, the Chicago Tribune reported.

Now that as many as six serious Democratic candidates remain in the race, pundits increasingly believe the party is headed for a brokered convention. Hold on to your hats if that happens, because it’s even more complicated than it sounds. Presidential nominating conventions used to be “brokered” because the delegates were largely appointed by — and loyal to — political bosses. Delegates voted on multiple ballots as rivals vied for the bosses’ favor, making the quadrennial events the political equivalent of reality television. You could never be sure which governor or senator would be voted off the island and which would become the ultimate survivor.

During the hearing, called “The Infant Patient: Ensuring Appropriate Medical Care for Children Born Alive,” Republican senators questioned why a baby born in a hospital should be treated differently than a baby born in an abortion facility. Democrats, lacking an answer, changed the subject. Thirteen committee senators heard from five female witnesses, three who shared powerful testimony and two who expressed concerns about the bill.
