Japan may test every person aboard the Diamond Princess for the coronavirus after it was determined Monday that there were 66 new cases on the quarantined ship docked at a Yokohama port.
The Japan Times, which first reported the increase, said the passengers will be able to disembark after test results become available. (Snip)
The passengers have been confined on the ship for six days with limited outdoor activities. The New York Times reported that the ship is "host to the highest concentration of the coronavirus cases outside China." The report said 2,600 passengers have been holed up in their cabins, and some have spoken about their anxiety.

Great place to put these infected and way out at sea. A new purpose for China's growing navy.

"Test" everyone? Really? I would love to hear what this "test" actually is. My bet it is some BS, ineffective "do you have symptoms" interview.
AFAIK, there is no actual "test" in the technical sense for this deadly pathogen.

I agree with OP that a cruise ship has got to be a worst case for contagious pathogens. I wish them well is separating the healthy from the ill. If they leave it as is they will all be ill in due course.

This so-called quarantine is the most stupid idea. It is almost a guarantee that everyone will be exposed. As such it is an unethical human experiment effectively designed to quantify the contagiousness and morbidity/mortality of the bug. They should rename the ship 'The Guinea Pig'.

From this one ship we are going to find out just how deadly this flu is. And, how quickly it spreads.

This is going to hammer the cruise companies' bottom lines. I have no desire to take a cruise for a number of reasons and this just adds one more. This is terrible for the passengers. There are bound to be a lot who need to get home or back at their jobs.

I knew there was a reason I avoid cruise ships like the plague.

Yeah, so?
That the 2,600 folks might get this disease (MIGHT) is WAY better than ensuring that many tens of thousands ashore will get the disease. Simple math, and VERY effective.
If the folks stay in their cabins, my bet is that they have a fairly low chance of getting the disease. But, many people want to "cheat" and probably leave their cabin. That would greatly increase their opportunities to contract this virus.
It is a perfect plan.

And, just think, China managed to stop all the protests in Hong Kong. As for being stuck on a cruise ship, I've never been on one but seems to me opening air and windows that open to let it through, might be a good thing. Being cooped up would suck but don't they have TV and books to read?

#11, probably not books, since they would have to be in their cabin, but if they have internet connection, they can download books, or read lots of other stuff, watch videos.

If they just keep the pax onboard a bit longer they can rest assured that everyone will be infected.

The report said 2,600 passengers have been holed up in their cabins.......................I can't think of a better way to breath re-cycled air from the ships ventilation system. I agree with several of the prior posters, cruise ships are cess pools of germs that are just waiting in crowded conditions to infect.

Always get a cabin with a direct source of fresh air.

Two of my relatives got the flu In 1918. One died while onboard a troop ship bound for France, after WWI was essentially over, The ship was a floating petri dish. The other survived in South Carolina because a kind nurse dragged his bed outdoors, away from the other sick soldiers. I cannot think of a worse place to be in an epidemic than cooped up on a cruise ship...
