A Massachusetts man who used a crossbow while trying to save his neighbor from being mauled by two dogs accidentally shot and killed him instead, according to officials.
Police received calls of a mauling in progress in the town of Adams, located in the northwestern part of the state, just after noon on Wednesday, according to a press release from the Berkshire District Attorney’s Office. When officers arrived, they found two adult pit bulls "engaging in a volatile confrontation," according to the release.

I hope the police are as skeptical as I am.

I’m surprised a crossbow has to be licensed.

I feeI bad for the poor guy, and I feel sorry for the dogs. Pit bulls can be trained to be aggressive, just like any breed, so what was the owner doing with them?

Idiot.
With all the stories in the news about these dogs attacking people, I thought out a strategy for dealing with this, if I must. If you have pepper spray- try it, first. Then, if you must, wade in with a baseball bat or similar stout, solid weapon, and strike at the dog's joints - the knees, the elbows, their paws (if against the ground) or the back, just in front of the hips. DON'T be half-hearted if someone's life is on the line.
Even if the dogs wont let go, if you disable the joints or their feet, they can't do as much damage. Even if you hit the victim, with a blunt club, it's unlikely to do the victim permanent injury if you're striking away from his/her head.
Dont strike at the dogs head unless he's going for you or he's released his hold on the victim, and then go for a home run. Only ever use a projectile weapon if you are absolutely sure you know where your projectile will end up - including potential targets beyond.
If an animal starts an unprovoked attack on a human, it's good as dead, anyway. If the human provoked the animal... well... if you can, try to discourage the dog first, but protect yourself and bystanders.
Its ugly. It's not something I would ever want to do. But...

Gee, another case of Border Collies attacking people. Oh wait, it wasn't Border Collies. Not Labs, nor Afghans. It was Pit Bulls. Its always Pit Bulls. A Pit Bull is like a gun with a worn out sear. It takes almost nothing to release that hammer and you never know when its going to happen. It might never, but don't count on it. They are the "inner city teens" of the dog world.
There is one in my neighborhood that runs free, as most dogs do around here. It has never threatened me, but my holster is always unsnapped when it comes into my yard. I'm not going to wait to be disemboweled to decide they might be dangerous.

#7 BS. Train a "pittie" to "be aggressive? You are kidding. Aren't you? Train like any other dog. Never heard such tripe.

Poor skills with weapons is always a shame. More time spent at practice would have probably helped.
But, the Hippocratic Oath applies to anyone trying to help someone else in any emergency, not just doctors.
"First, do no harm."
Yeah, that.

Re # 10
Michael Vick was kicked out of professional football for running a dog fighting ring. He trained his dogs by having them bite logs-then hoisted the log into the air with the dog still hanging on so it would continue to bite, strengthening its jaw muscles. Yes, you CAN train dogs to be aggressive.

I've had dogs most of my life. I love animals, rottweilers are particular favorites. Ive never had a pit bull. What I've seen of them, I never want one.
They're typically cute when they're puppies, but as they grow, they get weird, and aggressive. They are definitely one person, or at best one family dogs, and easily offended.
I dont know from personal experience, but I was told you had to be very particular in training them to insure they see you as the alpha of their little pack. And that from time to time they will challenge other members of the pack for status.
If true, that's wa-a-a-y too much work to me. I'll take a mutt, please. Or a rottie.

I currently have a red nose pit sleeping on the couch snuggled up with a bulldog. They’re both males. And neutered. With 8 dogs in our house, the occasional skirmish is expected but a loud yell stops it from getting out of hand. And our pit a lover, not a fighter. And he loves children. Oh and the UPS man.
