TAMPA — A Hillsborough County Sheriff’s deputy shot and killed a dog along the Gasparilla Parade route Saturday evening after it attacked a patrol horse, authorities said.
Deputies called for backup outside the high-rise 345 Bayshore Condominiums at about 6:30 p.m., shortly after the Parade of Pirates wound past the spot near the exit ramp for Tampa General Hospital.
Large crowds were still gathered along the Bayshore Boulevard route at the time of the attack and watched as the dog, believed to be a pit bull, charged at a team of horses carrying mounted patrol deputies from both the Sheriff’s Office and the Tampa Police Department. According to a spokesperson

Others who witnessed the incident told the Times that the Sheriff’s Office’s account of what happened is not accurate. The dog never attacked the horse, said Justin Schwegel of Sarasota.
The dog had his hands up and was clearly executed by a racist white cop. Riots and looting to follow.

Dog 70lbs. Horse 1,500 lbs. 1 dog. 1 Horse. Horse wins every time. No need to use the gun. That Police officer needs to pay for the dog and go back to training.

A horse can and will kick a dog into next week. I have seen a dog to flying literally not hitting the ground for 20 ft when kicked. I have a bit of trouble seeing that this was actually necessary, but perhaps it was to avoid injury for the horse.

2, either way that was a dead dog. Why allow it the chance to lock its jaws on the horse's leg causing the innocent horse serious injury before putting it down? It's an over of control hyper aggressive pit bull. It is barely a dog anymore after generations of bad breeding. Innocent horse, child, some other by stander. We're lucky it attacked another animal instead of a human before it was put down. Officer did the right thing.

I certainly agree that most horses could kick a 70 lb. dog twenty feet. One suspects that police horses are selected for their calm temperament and, being commonly used in crowd control, are trained not to launch swift kicks to threats coming from the rear.

While the horse id defending itself, what happens to the rider? Or anyone who steps in to try to restrain the dog. This incident took place during a parade, with thousands in attendance. Lots of noise and commotion going on. It's like taking an untrained dog to a shooting range.

A police trained exceptionally valuable crowd control horse (we are talking thousands of dollars here) vs. out of control mutt who could permanently injure the fragile legs of a horse or even cripple it to the point of euthanasia. Sorry, siding with the horse who was just doing his job.

It was the owner's fault for not keeping the dog on a strong tight leash. Animals just doing what animals do.

#8, I used to be in that club. But a Pitbull appeared in my yard 7 years and was THE BEST dog I have ever had (including schnauzers, border collies, Aussies)
I lost him in July and still sob when thinking of him.

One bite of a horse's foreleg, and that horse could have been fatally injured. A well trained police horse would not kick the dog (or anything or anyone or any other animal). I'm sorry the dog died, but I'm siding with the horse. And, some pit bulls, and some pit mixes, are not killers. In fact, a pit bull mix owned by my family member, is one of the sweetest (and smartest) dogs I've ever known. (Now, a chihuahua, another family dog, is a nasty witch of a dog, and bullies the (three times as large) pit bull mix, all the time. )

Anyone here defending that dog has absolutely no idea of what is involved in a pit bull attack.
They don’t bite, they maul. And are impossible to control when doing it.
Educate yourselves if you think you can stomach it. Pit bulls are not pets, they’re killing machines.

Dogs running loose should be AUTOMATICALLY put down. Their owners as well. Extreme? No. I for one have been attacked while walking or bicycling on public roads and thoroughfares and I have heard similar accounts from others. And know all too well of instances of loose dogs "packing up" so as to attack, injure, and sometimes kill, small farm animals. I am weary beyond measure at all the wails from those who think that such behavior should be excused.

I guess there is a least one community in FLA that can't understand how a civilized society works. In a working civilization you have a dog, YOU are responsible for controlling that dog. If you can't control it, society kills the dog and you are to blame.
Enjoying the back seat quarterbacks who think the horse could have, should have flicked a well aimed hoof at the Pit Bull and then continued to work as a Police horse. Kind of like, 'the officer could have should have shot the attacker in the arm.' The reality is the dog went nuts, because he was an aggressive dog at the wrong time and place and his owner is an idiot.

What if that dog had attacked a person ? I can't believe someone defended the dog.
You have to understand that there are people in FL so ignorant they would think this story is funny. Sometimes they own dogs.

I had one charge me while on my bicycle several days ago. Fortunately the male owner had it on a leash. Might have ripped the leash out of a surprised female's hands. Stupid, vicious animals. I need to start carrying when I ride.
