Picture a neighborhood composed of low and middle income families, each with two parents, no homeless people, no street drugs, safe to walk the streets at night. Is this the figment of an overactive imagination? Well, it is in fact a peek at a neighborhood in New York City where the son of immigrant parents read The New York Times every morning in high school, before orchestra rehearsal. Me. The principal, strongly authoritarian and well loved, opened a weekly assembly of highly diverse youngsters by reading a psalm from the Bible. Tough-as-nails, yet tenderhearted teachers passed on a tradition of excellence in thought, expression, and civility while preparing us

I'm 84 years old today. A well-written article. I can see the changes to our country and it doesn't bode well for any of us.

"Make America Great Again" doesn't mean much to the 20 year olds who never knew that America, have had a twisted version of history taught to them, spend more time on their phones than with their family and friends combined, haven't worked or paid taxes yet...
But it resonates with the rest of us, who remember the 50s and 60s. We remember playing outside for hours without worrying about pedophiles, having teachers who were held to a moral standard, going to college to get a real education (not an indoctrination), looking forward to independence and self-sufficiency (not dreading it)...

A similar tale could be written by the folks out here in flyover country because the values and our shared experiences are very much the same. They may have been executed differently but in essence, we are one. That wonderful experience has been under assault for decades by the left and we are living in the aftermath of its influence. It saddens me that my grandchildren will not know that way of life. It was a kinder, gentler experience that had an innocence about it and was almost magical looking back in retrospect. We may have evolved in the technicalities of daily life and innovations, but we have suffered greatly by the loss of unity, compassion, respect, and acknowledgment of God.

A very happy birthday to you , #1 !
Thanks to the Wayback Machine, I am able to remember an article from the early days of Lucianne regarding the comparative value of a 1949 high school diploma to that of a college degree in that day and age ( 1997ish). Hands down loser was the Deep State of Higher Education.

Good thoughts.
There was a point around the early 1950's when there was a shift in demographics when MORE people began living in the cities than out in the country. Each decade following, the impact is felt at such a degree that we are losing the values that kind of life provided and children of the 50-70's are now finding things being pushed on us are making OUR OWN childhood experiences almost unrecognizable today.
Take a look at the counties in red on the 2016 election map and you will pretty much see the last vestiges of the values, dedication and hard work that made us great. The loss of our elders who lived through hard times of the Depression and sacrificed who lived among us are almost gone now.... the generation X'ers may be our last hope of turning the thing around.

I am 82 in great health and also remember the 50's and 60's as well as 70's where the Marxist Communist democrat and Rino politicians really started showing their true agenda of 'Fundamentally changing America into a Marxist Communist democrat dictatorship'.
Pay close attention to the American traitors who love to live our life of freedom, personal property, and wealth. While at the same time working to destroy America from within just as predicted over 100 years ago. They actually believe when they change America into just another One World Government of Marxist Communism they will remain the leadership. That way they will be able to maintain their life style while all others will be slaves to a Marxist Communist World Government. However, the One World Marxist Communist leadership will have them eliminated as they are traitors to their own free country and cannot be trusted into leadership of the One World Marxist Communist Government existing leadership.
The traitors never learn because of their ignorance of true Marxist Communism was never taught to them.

I grew up in a neighborhood not far from the author's and while I agree and identify with his experience I must admit it wasn't all good. We had the mafia amongst us and returning veterans from WWII, some of whom were not God-fearing. Would I want to return to those times - in many ways absolutely - return with medical advances a must. Having the internet and cell phones that double as computers - OK - with "lead us not into temptation..." instilled in every heart would make it be GREAT!

I just turned 89 the 18th and I remember those days. One was that the male students who were not to proficient in our regular classes wood go to "The Shop" where they would learn skills that might help in the manual work force. most of them became productive citizens. I also remember the Rifle Clubs.

I can remember when college campuses were the safest places on earth. I can remember when the introduction of PELL grants (whereby your could fail but still get your money and stay in school for a long while, etc.) caused the rapid decline of one small state university in Texas----and this was duplicated in other parts of the state. Part of this decline was being unable to simply go into the entrance to the Student Union Building without running a gauntlet of intimidation and physical crowding. In the 50s I explored and played all over our large farm, accompanied only by my dog. (My restriction was that I couldn't go "down to the Branch" because wolves had been seen down there long, long before.) The best swing on the farm was in a huge and very old pecan tree down in the cotton field, yards from the house. During that same time period we elementary school children were basically let loose to go all over town Trick or Treating accompanied by one or two friends in the dark. When I share what life was like in my childhood, my sons look at me askance. They can't quite imagine. (But they do know that their childhood was freer and safer than that of their own children today.) By the way, I didn't hear the F-word said right out loud in school---or anywhere, actually---until I was in 11th grade, and that was by a new student.

# 1 Happy Birthday
Three things changed this country forever:
They took prayer out of school
They stopped the draft
Women went to work and somebody else raised their children without cuddling and in plastic carriers
