President Donald Trump responded to a New York Times report on Saturday about a proposal that the Army Corps of Engineers is studying to protect New York from future hurricanes and tsunamis, saying that it is too costly, won’t work, and will look terrible. The plan involves constructing “man-made islands with retractable gates” that stretch six miles long “from the Rockaways in Queens to a strip of land in New Jersey south of Staten Island” and could save “property and lives.” “Those who support a barrier miles from Manhattan’s coast — one in the outer New York Harbor,

The real question here is this: Is NYC worth protecting? Not in my book!

The wall on our southern border will save more lives and will cost a lot less than the $119 billion that seawall would cost, and 25 years to build!

We'll all enjoy the names people will come up with for this monstrosity. Better to finish the border wall, instead.

I don't recall a lot of stories about flooding in NYC. Am I out of the loop?

If the Chinese are dredging up enough material from somewhere to build military bases out in the Pacific, NYC ought to be able to do build a man-made barrier island if they truly want to protect their city. I suspect the water is far shallower just offshore NYC so such a project should be less difficult.
Besides whatever happened to the independence of the NYC citizen? Just prior to the Revolutionary War the citizens of NYC build a wall to protect them from the British. The road built along that wall came to be named Wall Street.
So NYC, get off your fat A$$es and git 'r done.

So, let the water go into Queens and NJ so you can save Manhattan? If you are from Manhattan, you must truly be so much better than everyone else.

Such a ridiculous solution. NYC is crumbling from years of neglect, but they always have money for illegals and welfare. Time to make some tough decisions, NY.

Silly me! I think people shouldn't build homes or businesses in a place that is prone to flooding! There! And if you choose to do so anyway, YOU are the one who should pay for the Insurance! All over the country, where there is a shoreline people will build there. Yes, it's wonderful to live near the Water, but there is a cost for that pleasure, it's called Insurance that YOU pay for. It your place is destroyed by a 100 year storm or a 10 year storm, YOU are the one who has to deal with the disaster, not the folks who do not have the pleasure of living by the Water! JMHO!

This will take the same turn as Fat Teddy's refusal to have windmills block his ocean view. "Not in my back yard." Unless New Yorkers are now crazy enough to want their own version of the Big Dig or the Train to Nowhere. One never knows the limits of waste and stupidity if one is a democrat.
Great pun, #4.

One storm named Sandy is all it took to get this idea started. This will be another Boston tunnel that had so many cost over runs it ended up costing twice what the original estimate stated, and it still leaked when finished.

Only thing worth protecting in NYC would be the financial district. I suspect the destruction of that part of NYC would be devastating to the country as a whole. Instead of a sea wall, maybe Trump should think about regulations that would force the Financial District to decentralize so any hit would not be so catastrophic to the nation. NYC is another place that could fall into the ocean for all I care. Right now, it needs a good old fashioned political cleaning anyway.
One other thing here. If the Atlantic zone lets loose, thanks to a quake or one of the Canary Islands splitting in half like the scientists have been warning about since the early 200's, the resulting tsunami would not be stopped by a sea wall of any kind. For scientists have been saying the tsunami would not only devastate a huge swath of Europe, but would devastate our own Eastern seaboard from top to almost bottom. So go ahead NYTimes, listen to the pretty violin music and mock any efforts at protecting you. You all deserve what is coming.

Based a recent Smithsonian program about rising seas... it highlighted that 30% of Manhattan Island built on land full of rivers and oceans.. think this may be NY problem, of disrupting the balance of nature? Now an artificial island, coupled with water tunnels diverting water from upstate.. selfish is too kind a word for the these selfish hypocrites and arrogant people of NY they are leeches on the rest of the country!
