The NRA’s Marion Hammer is

The Florida Legislature’s annual session is barely under way, and the National Rifle Association’s Marion Hammer already is angry. That’s a good sign. It means Sen. Tom Lee of Thonotosassa is headed in the right direction with modest legislation that would require background checks of more gun buyers. The proposed requirements should be more robust, but they may reflect what is politically possible at the moment and they would be an improvement over the status quo. Lee, who has an independent streak, was handed the unenviable assignment by Senate President Bill Galvano to come up with a response to the August mass shootings at a Walmart in El Paso,

Comments:

Gun safety? They think we'd be safer without our guns. Our tocado local paper agrees with what's happening in Virginia and wants to bring gun control to Florida and turn us into a Non-Free State where self defense either isn't encouraged or is actively opposed. The Times is rarely right about anything, and they're as wrong as hell about this. Hoplophobes.

Why exactly does the fact that one nutcase (that no gun control laws -- short of taking all guns away -- would have stopped) in El Paso, TX, require a "response" in Florida?!?!?!? There are thousands of Wal-Mart stores all across the country, and only this one has had a mass shooting. Once again, no gun control law would have stopped an evil and insane man from taking that action. But lie-berals are never about logic, reason, or facts. They are all about feelings, and it just feels like they have to "respond" to that one incident. Please let the conservatives stop this insanity before they really start to do damage to our Constitutional rights!!!!!

“The very concept of objective truth is fading out of the world,” wrote George Orwell in a 1943 essay, Looking Back on the Spanish War. “Lies will pass into history.” A truer thing was never said about the current omnipresence of the Lie. Of course, everybody lies. That the vast majority of politicians lie, almost as a matter of principle, is common knowledge. But I had not grasped until relatively late that the Lie—in majuscule—had become so pervasive that it could be said to constitute a public if unofficial institution. Orwell said that truth had ceased to exist in 1936, an exaggeration made for emphasis,

BOSTON — Alex Cora has already been identified as a ringleader in an illegal system of sign stealing when he was with the Houston Astros. The Red Sox didn't wait to see what punishment Major League Baseball might give him for possibly bringing a similar scheme with him to Boston. Cora was fired by the team he led to the 2018 World Series title on Tuesday night, one day after baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred said he was "an active participant" in the Astros' cheating when he was a bench coach in Houston. Ads by ZEDO Manfred mentioned Cora by name 11 times in a nine-page report, saying he "originated and executed" the scheme

Could it be this bad? Lee Smith argues that the Iran nuclear deal was actually part of a deal to make Iran the new regional power in the Middle East. (Snip) If you flip political sides, the Democrats' accusations against Trump are equally bad. He is variously portrayed as a stooge for Russia, the henchman of Putin, a blackmailer of Ukraine to frame Joe Biden, or the provocateur of war with Iran to distract from his own impeachment. Whether such crimes have actually been committed by either side can be debated; what is undeniable is the animus of mutual accusations. The blood-feuds of the old world are here;
New Zealand schools to teach students

Every school in New Zealand will this year have access to materials about the climate crisis written by the country’s leading science agencies – including tools for students to plan their own activism, and to process their feelings of “eco-anxiety” over global heating. The curriculum will put New Zealand at the forefront of climate change education worldwide; governments in neighbouring Australia and the United Kingdom have both faced criticism for lack of cohesive teaching on the climate crisis. The New Zealand scheme, which will be offered to all schools that teach 11 to 15 year-old students, will not be compulsory, the government said.

Iran's people barely can scrape together enough calories to keep body and soul together in the big cities, while entire parts of rural Iran are emptying out as rivers and wells go dry. Things are so bad that the number of babies born in Iran has fallen by nearly 25% in the past five years. Only Venezuela is worse off -- but the wicked Maduro government remains in power. Regimes that are willing to shoot their people dead in the streets (as Iran shot 1,500 protesters last November) can cling to power even under desperate material circumstances. As I wrote at Asia Times yesterday: "One average salary pays

It seems as though every day brings us something new out of Virginia relating to their now Democrat-led legislators and gun laws. What’s the latest? State Delegate Dan Helmer filed a bill this past Wednesday that would allow the Attorney General, Mark Herring, the ability to determine which states’ concealed carry permits Virginia would continue to recognize, and potentially making it almost impossible for people to protect themselves if they do not live in Virginia. Not that they plan to let Virginians protect themselves either. It appears that this would include members of the military that are stationed at one of the many Virginia bases.

A bug in the code of a Facebook update rolled out last week accidentally made it possible to see which accounts were responsible for posts to Facebook Pages, including those of celebrities and politicians, for a period of several hours. "All it took to exploit the bug was opening a target page and checking the edit history of a post. Facebook mistakenly displayed the account or accounts that made edits to each post, rather than just the edits themselves," explained Wired. Facebook was quick to post a fix, thanks to a security reacher who alerted them to the big. "We quickly fixed an issue where someone could see who edited

World War 3 with Iran in retaliation for the killing of terror mastermind Qasem Soleimani failed to materialize. Instead Iran fired about a dozen missiles at airfields hosting US fores in Sunni and Kurdish areas of Iraq and despite deadly intent failed to cause casualties. Content with that bootless result the ayatollahs offered to end the cycle of retaliation, at least for now, citing their generous and forgiving nature. The abrupt de-escalation of military conflict caused by the actual impracticability of open war left inflamed political passions with nowhere to go. So they burst their channels in various ways. The reaction to Soleimani's death has proved more

California certainly marches to the beat of a different drummer. They treat the federal government as a rival fiefdom, setting their own environmental laws, their own immigration laws, their own fuel standards -- as if the seat of power in the United States was in Sacramento. On Friday, Governor Gavin Newsom will present the state's budget for the next fiscal year. In it, he will propose that the state of California sell its own brand of prescription drugs in order to "increase competition in the generic drug marketplace and lower the cost of medications by having Sacramento contract drugmakers to manufacture certain prescriptions under a state label."

If the Trump era has taught us anything, it's that large numbers of white people in the United States are motivated at least in part by racism in the voting booth. Donald Trump ran an openly racist campaign for president, calling Mexicans rapists and criminals, regularly retweeting white supremacists and at least initially balking at repudiating former Ku Klux Klan leader David Duke. Trump made it clear in his campaign that "Make America Great Again" meant that America was greater when white people's power was more sweeping and more secure. White voters approved of that message by a whopping 58 percent to 37 percent.

The couple will also no longer formally represent The Queen. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex said they intend to repay £2.4m of taxpayer money for the refurbishment of Frogmore Cottage, which will remain their UK family home. The new arrangement comes into effect in spring this year, the palace said. This is some news that should absolutely terrify Democrats. They know they need Wisconsin and other rust belt states to beat Trump in 2020 but the crowd at Trump’s recent rally there proves winning the state is going to be extremely difficult for them. More than half of the people at Trump’s rally were not even Republicans. Red State reports: Mind-Blowing! 58% Of Attendees at Trump’s Wisconsin Rally Were NOT Republicans, Up from 43% in Ohio Several days ago, Trump’s campaign manager Brad Parscale posted statistics from last week’s rally held in Toledo, OH, which showed that 43% of attendees identified as either Democratic or Independent. We all died in 2016, and our punishment for our bad decisions is to relive the presidential election every single day, with the exact same cast of characters. The streaming service Hulu released the first trailer Friday for its four-part Hillary Clinton docuseries titled, Hillary. (Although “docuseries” may not be the best word for it. “Hagiography” seems more appropriate.) Director Nanette Burstein reportedly shot more than 35 hours of original interview footage with Clinton and used a total 1,700 hours of footage to create what CNN describes as an “intimate portrait of the one-time Democratic presidential candidate.” 'One-time?' President Donald Trump made a stark appeal to black Americans during the 2016 election when he asked, “What have you got to lose?” Three years later, black Americans have rendered their verdict on his presidency with a deeply pessimistic assessment of their place in the United States under a leader seen by an overwhelming majority as racist. The findings come from a Washington Post-Ipsos poll of African Americans nationwide, which reveals fears about whether their children will have a fair shot to succeed and a belief that white Americans don’t fully appreciate the discrimination that black people experience.
