Sultan Qaboos bin Said Al Said of Oman, the Arab world's longest-serving ruler, has died aged 79. The sultan deposed his father in a bloodless coup with British support in 1970 and set Oman on a path to development, using its oil wealth. Widely regarded as popular, he was also an absolute monarch and any dissenting voices were silenced. No cause of death has been confirmed. His cousin Haitham bin Tariq Al Said has been sworn in as his successor. A family council had three days to choose a successor as Qaboos had no heir or publicly designated successor. Instead

Comments:

He ruled for 50 years holding all the major government titles. No dissent of any kind allowed.

LAUSANNE, Switzerland — U.S. Women’s National Team and Seattle Reign FC star Megan Rapinoe responded Friday to the new guidelines from the International Olympic Committee on political protests at the 2020 Tokyo Games. “So much being done about the protests. So little being done about what we are protesting about. We will not be silenced,” Rapinoe wrote on an Instagram story Friday. The IOC published guidelines Thursday specifying which types of athlete protests will not be allowed at the 2020 Tokyo Games. A new anti-Trump Republican group, the Lincoln Project, is out with their first ad targeting President Donald Trump as the group looks to chip away at his support among evangelical voters. The video titled "the MAGA church," which comes on the heels of the Trump campaign investing big in evangelical outreach, features a string of unflattering clips of the president along with the message: “If this is the best American Christians can do, then God help us all.” The ad is a first test of the type of firepower the Lincoln Project can produce as the group of anti-Trump Republicans

Bernie Sanders's campaign ratcheted up its attacks on Joe Biden's claim that he did not support the Iraq War nearly as soon as it started. “It is appalling that after 18 years Joe Biden still refuses to admit he was dead wrong on the Iraq War, the worst foreign policy blunder in modern American history," Sanders senior adviser Jeff Weaver said in a statement Saturday. "Unlike 23 of his Senate colleagues who got it right, Biden made explicitly clear that he was voting for war, and even after the war started, he boasted that he didn’t regret it." Biden voted

Fox News Sunday host Chris Wallace doesn’t think President Donald Trump or anyone else in his administration should be surprised that Congress and the American people are not taking their claims about an “imminent” threat from Iran at face value. Speaking to Fox News’ Bret Baier on Friday afternoon, Wallace said, “I think to a certain degree, the administration has itself to blame. Because right away the president and Mike Pompeo, when he was doing all five Sunday shows this last week, was saying ‘imminent, imminent, imminent.’” He said that “understandably” people want to know what “imminent” actually meant in

Former vice president Joe Biden is far and away the favored candidate for the Democratic presidential nomination among black Americans, boosted by his personal popularity, his service in the Obama administration and perceptions that he is best equipped to defeat President Trump, according to a national Washington Post-Ipsos poll. For most of the twenty-first century, the world’s oldest surviving democracy has been led by a chief executive who received fewer votes than his opponent in an election for the position. The first of these executives started a war based on false pretenses that killed hundreds of thousands of civilians. The second — a serial abuser of women who hired as his campaign manager a lobbyist for violent dictatorships - authorized an immigration policy that forcibly separated migrant children from their families and indefinitely detained them in facilities described as “concentration camps.” Democracy, as they say, is messy.

Harry and Meghan don’t know how good they have it. They want to bust out of their gilded cage and roam free, but they’re so naive they’re like fluffy kitties who have never crossed a busy road before and are likely to get squashed if they try. A key motivation to the shocking Megxit announcement this week — even as the Queen warned Meghan and Prince Ginger Whiskers against going public with their moronic plan — was their fury with the media. They hate the “Royal Rota” system, in which a designated royal reporter and photographer cover their events as representatives of the entire media and the royals

In January 2014, the then-president of France, François Hollande, arrived in England for talks with Prime Minister David Cameron on military and nuclear cooperation. No one in the British press really cared about the official reason for the visit, though. At the time, Hollande was living at the Élysée Palace with his girlfriend, but he had just been revealed to have been having an affair with a French actress—he had been darting to her apartment on the back of a scooter, protected by his official security team and his face hidden from view by a motorbike helmet. He had flown into England as the storm still swirled back home.

What an explosive week this has been in the aftermath of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s bombshell announcement that they wish to ‘step back’ as senior royals. I share much of the anger, frustration and sorrow of the British public at their decision, which has been much-discussed over the past few days.  But there is one aspect of this drama that concerns and saddens me: the behaviour of Prince Harry, and what appears to be him turning his back on the Royal Family.  This is so out of character, and — as his biographer who knows him better than many — I fear something is seriously amiss.
