Kohl's Corp and J.C. Penney Co Inc reported lower holiday season sales on Thursday, a sign that traditional brick-and-mortar retailers struggled to compete with record-breaking online shopping between Thanksgiving and New Year's Day.
Kohl's said it now expects full-year earnings to come in at the bottom end of an already lowered forecast, blaming weak demand for women's apparel during the crucial shopping season. The Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin-based department store operator's shares fell 9% as it posted a 0.2% drop in comparable sales in November and December. In a bid to drive traffic to its stores, Kohl's formed a

Hmmmm . . . I guess I'd better hurry over to Kohls and use that gift card I received over a year ago. Now what do they sell?

Well, when I walk into most of the Kohl's or Penney's stores, I want to walk right back out. Retail stores are so predictable. Especially at Christmas. Decorations seem the same and usually are in the same place every year. Sales personnel are unpredictable; there are very nice and personable ones and others seems like they could care less whether you are in their store. I think retail stores need to be more creative and they could accomplish that by asking the customer what they like to see more of in products.
I am getting to the point where I am sick of ordering things on line because a good percentage I am having to return or several times I don't even receive products I have ordered. Happening more than I care for with Amazon. I have to say ordering on-line from Wal-Mart is usually a better experience.

One more comment about stores. Cleanliness is a factor too. Especially bathrooms. Some of them are disgusting. My two cents. . .

A sign of the times I guess. Online shopping is just so danged convenient. We try to buy from our local shops as much as possible but it looks like brick and mortar retail will come down to grocery stores, restaurants, and specialty shops.

The problem with both stores is that they have too much merchandise. It’s over whelming and can be messy so that makes it even worse. Kohl’s needs to focus on a few lines that they carry and don’t try to be everything to everybody. Penney’s has cleaned up their stores but they have to focus on their men’s line, because they have a great thing going with Tall men’s clothing. Make both department stores less cluttered and things will turn around

The employees seem resentful to have to help you. The cheap fabrics are sewn with fishing wire and if you got near a fire? The whole place would melt. It's not longer safe to go to your car. Pure and simple. Nobody wants the hassle when you can shop at home and can cuss at your computer.

Several times this year I made it a point to purchase goods from JC Penney, hoping to have a small positive impact on their existence.

I've worked for one of these retailers for 10 years. (I have my reasons.) I have to be careful with my comments here. Finding and keeping competent help is difficult. I make it easy for customers to see what the merchandise is like and help people order it online. I make returns to the store painless....if the customer has the correct receipt(documentation).

Let's wait to hear from some of the other retailers. These two businesses have very poor quality clothing etc.

It's quite a coincidence that both Kohl's and Penney's share the same deceptive and obvious pricing policy in their stores. They jack up the suggested retail price to a level that you know you would not pay BUT, you get 30% to 40% off, which reduces it to everybody else's price if you have the proper coupon with you AND you use the store credit card. Sorry guys, the games are too annoying to play when I need a shirt.

Another attempt to take down the Trump economic news. Not mentioned here are the sales that transitioned from shopping malls and brick and mortar stores to on-line malls. I'd love to hear those numbers!

I'd love to shop in department store if it was a pleasant experience, and the merchandise had some quality and met my needs. Our local Penny's didn't even put up Christmas decorations. The whole middle of the store has been taken over by some type of mega beauty counter...a "store" within the store. I tried to find a dress to wear to church for Christmas and they only had formals for parties. There wasn't a skirt or regular dress in the store. I went to Kohl's and they also lacked any dresses or skirts, but they did decorate. I ended up at Ross and they had two racks of dresses and I found a great red sweater dress and lovely pale lavender sleeveless for summer.
I found all my Christmas gifts at our small town J.D. Redhouse Mercantile. Living out in the woods, internet buying is a necessity, but I'd support the bigger stores down in the county seat if they weren't so awful.
