The Senate Republican playbook should be put House Speaker Nancy Pelosi on mute and get this trial started. Pelosi and the Democrats have no say in the matter. They don’t. And by withholding the articles of impeachment against President Trump because they know it faces certain death in the Republican Senate creates a new constitutional crisis of its own. This isn’t about a fair trial. As Wall Street Journal columnist Kimberley Strassel noted, a trial would only further degrade their position in the polls on this impeachment push. It was never popular from the start, and now it’s underwater nationally. It’s especially not popular

The trial should be held to reveal to the public just what a travesty of injustice this 3 year long attempt to overthrow the government has been. The actions of the Democrats and MSM have been deplorable.

With all of the parties, activities and events I’ve attended during the month of December, I haven’t heard a single person mention impeachment. The country has already moved on. It’s time for Nancy to do an Emily Litella impersonation and say, “Nevermind” while shrugging.
And, BTW, Happy 2020 Ldotters! May it be a year jam packed with more winning!

They should not honor the insanity of the House clown show. They should review the information (or absence of) in the House action and state its complete lack of actionable evidence and refuse to waste the Senate's time on a partisan propaganda impeachment. It should be a rebuke and a rejection of the House, NOT a trial.

It's about Biden rule part Deux, no "impeached" president shall be allowed to nominate a supreme court justice.
If there was a genuine opposition party to the communists an investigation into the fraudulent impeachment process would take place without any need for the articles to be submitted. What has been done is criminal. No need to wait for the next crime.

it could be positive for Trump since the case is super weak.
No, no, no and NO! The case is NOT super weak. The case does NOT exist just like purple unicorns that poop delicious Skittles DO NOT exist. Geez, can we PLEASE stop giving the criminals credibility, please?

I am so conflicted about how to move forward. I want more than anything to have the democrat party exposed for the seditious criminals they are. I want all the ugliness pushed out into the light of day so no one will question who is guilty of attempting to unseat a duly elected President and why. The crimes that have been committed require punishment in the form of jail time for those convicted regardless of who they are and what positions they hold/held. If we do not hold these people accountable, trust in the judicial system that makes this country work will collapse. How do you govern a people who believe their leaders are corrupt and lawless?
Pause for a moment and consider the actions of the democrat party if the shoe were on the other foot. There would be gallows being built on the Capitol steps. Republicans must understand that this has gone too far to be massaged politically. What the democrats have done is a crime. Americans are incensed that democrats have conspired to commit sedition. While it may be a painful exercise to bring the bad actors to justice because of their status, that is exactly why each of them should pay a high price for their crimes against the American voter. Trump was the face of their plot but the American people’s right to choose their President was to be nullified. We chose wrongly and they had to fix it. If anyone had beaten HRC, they would have been treated exactly the same way. What they didn’t expect was the President’s willingness to fight for himself and ultimately the American people.
Whatever it takes to expose the democrats and their co-conspirators in the media, I am all for. Whatever the choice, it is not going to be easy but the American people stand firmly behind this President. He deserves justice and the American people deserve to know that their justice system can be trusted. I pray that the men and women involved have the wisdom and courage needed to do what is right and not expedient. The nation deserves justice.

You are right, #5. McConnell should have declared this matter settled on the day that Ninny Pelosi refused to move the House proceedings forward. Even the democrats should be ashamed of having wasted three years of our time and money on the fantasy that a democrat woman should have been elected in 2016 to carry on Barack Obama's pathetic legacy.

This is the best example of political suicide that we will ever see in our lifetimes. Good one, dims. And buh bye to your party. But, heed the warning that 2020 will be the mother of political dogfights in America's history. We must stand locked and loaded to ensure victory in November.
Meanwhile, Happy New Year to the smartest, funniest, and most insightful folks I have ever been around and whose news research, analysis, and comments in this great salon continue to be hugely valuable to me and I thank you. Several of you whose opinions I especially value have already commented today.
More to come in 2020.

Nonsense. Let's have a special prosecutor...we know how that turned out. Let's wait for the IG report...decisively proves everyone "right". Let's impeach Trump...and the public doesn't respond demanding his removal. So, now, let's have a trial without any basis...uh, think about that. Until the Senate gets the Articles, what are the charges? You want to talk about a Constitutional crisis?
Let the enemy destroy itself...and the enemy is the UNIPARTY...not just the Dems.

Now they can add the “mishandling of the embassy” to the articles of impeachment.
How convenient that this should happen right at this time

Because the whole coup/impeachment issue is such a mess, why can't the Senate hold hearings, on TV, on the whole kit and kaboodle, starting with calling in the FBI and democrat coupers, and all the democrat house investigators? It would help the people see what went on.

Once the Senate reconvenes, and whether or not the House formally submits the articles of impeachment, the House should promptly take up the articles as publicly documented and summarily dismiss them with a severe rebuke to the partisan actions of the House. As the senior chamber of Congress, the Senate should catalog the improper and unconstitutional processes involved, by the FBI, the FISA court, and the House, listing those improprieties in detail. It should forcefully state that impeachment, as the final action allowed by the constitution to remove a duly elected President should ONLY by conducted as a fair, open, and totally bipartisan process and not become a cheap tactical action of the losing party in a national election.
The Senate must right this wrong. And the House must be publicly censured for attempting to wrongfully remove the people's choice for their President.

Sort of. Respectfully, they always planned to hold it and use it in the 2020 campaign to dive out the base- arguing that they need Democrats to take over the Senate and keep the House . And to support the week Democrat candidate.
In short, It will not be presented to the Senate for trial this year.

My preference would be for the Senate to strike this matter instanter which would but only if the House submits their "impeachment" and, in a document that is made public, that lays out in great detail, point by point, with exhibits attached. It should include names, places, times and un-redacted, unclassified and available online. It would be appropriate since there is no "case": no evidence, no crime, no witnesses with personal knowledge of the facts. But what I would like to see is for President Trump to take legal action against against Pelosi, Schiff, Nadler, the "witnesses", Clinton, Comey, all the FBI players, and all the rest of the crooks (as well as any appropriate criminal action, Mr. Barr). This went well beyond politics. They should not be allowed to get away with their misuse of their power and position. I would also like to see all of these crooks investigated fraud and mishandling of taxpayer funds and it should include family members. They want to see President Trump's tax record, lets see theirs.
